FITZGERALD TRADE UNLIKELY

As the growing PFT Planet chapter in Philly watches and waits for the Eagles to inject some new talent into the roster, one of the lingering fantasies is that the team will swing a trade for Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald.

We don't see it happening, for two reasons.

First, Fitzgerald is due to earn total base salaries of $31 million over the next two seasons under the ridiculously stoopid contract that the Cardinals gave him as a rookie. Whoever trades for Fitzgerald has to assume that contract. And, surely, his new team would want to extend the deal.

But any new contract would have to have guaranteed money that matches the amounts he's due to earn over the next two years. And it would probably take a lot more than that to get Fitz to give up an essentially "guaranteed" $31 million over the next two seasons and a shot at unrestricted free agency in what very well could be an uncapped year.

Second, the Cardinals have to want to trade him. Though it might be in their best interests to do so, it wasn't in their best interests to give him that contract in the first place. So don't count on this franchise doing anything that reasonable people would regard as smart.

Our guess is that Fitzgerald will spend the next two seasons with the Cardinals, pocket his $31 million, and go elsewhere in March 2010 -- especially since the franchise tender for Fitzgerald in 2010 would exceed $20 million.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals now claim that their ability to sign new free agents and keep their own free agents is hampered by the Fitzgerald situation.

Hey, guys -- you only have yourselves to blame. And if you don't want to pay Fitzgerald what you previously agreed to pay him, you have an option.

You can cut him.

Cards owner seemed pretty emphatic about not trading Fitz. Certainly wouldn't want to see him in Philly, or any capable WRs there.

NFL Network reported this last weekend - that there was zero chance they were letting him go.

So much for number5's prediction. Like I said last night, the cards are facing some tough choices here. That $31 million is all but guaranteed over the next two years and this will force the cards to make one of three choices.

First, they could trade him and absorb a big cap hit. Second, they could restructure his contract and pay him a $35 million (at least, if not more) SB. Third, they could keep him under the current agreement - which is enormous.

No matter what happens, the cards will not be a big player in FA because of this situation. In fact, they may be forced to give up some of their own players - including a quality player or two.

Way to go bidwell!!!

Yep, that's what it will take - at least that amount. He makes more than $14 million this year and more than $17 million next season. fitz wants a higher SB than calvin johnson's $32.5 million rookie SB.

Don't you think McNabb is happy about this?

McNabb happy about not having a receiver? Im confused...

If there is one thing the Eagles need more than anything, its a big time WR. Until they get one, the offense will continue to sputter. That said, im impressed with the Cardinals ability to make the incredibly stupid move they did in writing that contract. 31 million over 2 years, for a WR. Simply amazing.

He didn't ask for a receiver. He asked for "playmakers," and he specifically said "on both sides of the ball." Brian Dawkins, Jon Runyan and Brian Westbrook later echoed his sentiments.

I'm not sure why Samuel would preclude them from getting a receiver, if the so chose.

Damn dude is a beast, but $35 million up front. IF that happens, look for top tier to break the bank for WR's.
