SAMUEL SET TO JOIN THE FLOCK
Various media reports, collected and referenced by our good friends at SportingNews.com, indicate that cornerback Asante Samuel will indeed sign a contract with the Eagles on Friday.
It's reportedly a five-year, $47.2 million deal. To the casual fan, that's short of the $10 million per year average from the eight-year, $80 million deal signed last year by Nate Clements of the 49ers. As everyone in PFT Planet knows, the Clements deal is actually seven years and $64 million, making it worth a hair over $9 million per year.
Samuel's deal carries an average of nearly $9.5 million. They could have added a phony final year that would have pushed the average to $10 million per year or more, and we respect both sides for doing what looks to be a "real" deal.
Also, there's a certain irony regarding the five-year duration of the contract. Typically, the Eagles like to lock players up for looooong periods of time. As it now stands, Samuel's deal will expire before the contracts signed by some of the young players who cashed in early.

They shell out that cash for Samuel, yet wouldn't to keep TO? Good job Eagles. My bet is this is going to blow up in their face, especially if they can't get a good trade for either Lito or Brown.
We'll see how well Samuel does when he plays for a head coach who hasn't been taping other teams' signals.

Something tells me if Asante Samuel demands a new contract next Januarary and goes out of his way to embarass Donovan McNabb and Andy Reid, followed by telling Jim Johnson that he isn't allowed to talk to him, then he'll get the same treatment as T.O.

Well, if this is true, it is time to see if he is a product of the system or not.

I'm actually feeling pretty good about this. He won't live up to $10 mil per and hopefully the iggles will be in some cap trouble. Samuel is a good corner, but he's not Champ Bailey or Mcalister good. That's a ridiculous sum of money.

Oldskool, might want to drop the 's' at the end of Samuel in the thread title! I did a double-take. :)

The question is how much of that money is guaranteed. Clements got what $30M in guarantees so my bet is Samuel will get slightly more - say $32ishM. The concern for Eagles fans is that if he turns out to be a good but not great corner who thrived playing on a dominate team (which is my guess) you essentially have no way to move him for the next 3 or 4 years without taking a massive cap charge.
Lets not even talk about what this means if he gets hurt. The Freak MkII ?

Sheppard and Samuel is going to be a wash. They will see he is a Cover 2 guy.
Let him gamble w/ Plaxico, Owens, Santana Moss he will get roasted.

Exactly. Dude has like 18 career picks, 17 against Dallas!!!!:laugh::laugh::laugh:
I would much rather see Samuel every year than Sheppard. Lito is way better in Run Support and Man coverage.

I think they are both fine cbs but sit back and think about this for a minute. Who stays healthy most of the time? The Eagles now have a fine trading piece in Lito for posibly a #1 WR or movement in the draft. They could simply use him as a nickle back. They have 3 probowlers at cb now. Thats sick man. Plus they still have Dawkins back there.

Probably but I also heard they might move Brown to SS. Who knows. Its a nice problem to have though. He's a nice trading piece.

Yup. I am more worried about them getting a guy like Fitz or Roy WIlliams than I Am about Samuel.

Yep, the eagles signed a system corner who will now become an above average player at an expensive price.
How's that fitz thing working out?

did samuel really say 'their fans are always supportive of the team' when talking to the press after signing?
i guess he must not pay attention to media regarding other teams...
