49ers lock up defensive end Smith with 6-year, $45 million deal

The San Franciso 49ers and defensive end Justin Smith (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5451) agreed to a six-year, $45 million contract that included $20 million in guarantees.

Smith, who had played all of his seven previous seasons in the NFL in Cincinnati, was given the franchise tag by the Bengals in 2007.
Smith was the fourth overall pick in the 2001 draft out of Missouri. He has 43 ½ career sacks but managed only two last season. Smith has played in 16 games every season except his rookie campaign when he made 15 appearances.

Good for them.

Means we didn't sign him, which makes me happy. He's a tad overrated and probably wouldn't have produced the results that many on this forum think he's capable of, at least on this team.

Once the 49ers were said to be interested there was little doubt that's where he'd end up. They have not been afraid to throw around the big bucks the last two years.

Smith is real good player and one of the few FA's I thought would have been a great fit in Washington......But not for that kind of cash!

Man I know the owner's cant wait to opt out of the current labor agreement. I know inflation happens every year with these contract but it is getting out of hand.

Justin Smith $20 mil guaranteed
Gibril Wilson $16 mil guaranteed
Tommy Kelly $18 mil guaranteed

Imagine how much Randy Moss is going to want? Imagine how much Merriman, Ware, and any other young defensive stud is going to want when it is time for them to re-up.

The problem is this is the best sport in America, and these contracts don't even compare to those of the MLB, or the NBA, so we can only expect more contracts like these in the future.

They still won't win as long as Nolan is pretending to be a HC.

Terrible signing by the Niners. No surprise here as they have a clown HC.
