View Full Version : Dental Judgement Day tomorrow, UPDATE: That was hell

Alright, I'm back and it's over...that was absolute hell. So I get to the dentists office around 8:00 a.m. this morning and get taken into the back. They numb me up and shoot me full of novocaine (or whatever the local agent is these days) on the right side of my mouth. Some water, suction, and a few tools that look like what you open a paint can with, and bam, the right tooth is out.

Or is it? No, some of the roots broke off and are stuck in my jaw or gum or something. They need to come out as well. What follows is 45 minutes of the dentist digging into my jawbone, gum, whatever with various sized chisel looking things, some things that look like drill bits, and christ knows what else. Nothing doing. That means it's time to see a specialist.

For the first time in my life, I got to drive my car across town with a mouthful of bloody gauze, most of a tooth missing, and only able to feel half my jaw. I get to the oral surgeon and am promptly informed that they don't take my insurance, so it'll be about $600 to finish the procedure. What can I say at this point, I'm bleeding down my chin.

So I get taken back, and the surgeon starts digging away, and thus I get introduced to the saw that Candace mentioned. A few incisions in my gums and out come the roots. Then it's time to shoot up the other side of my mouth. Which is fine, except that the initial numbing agent has worn off somewhat, so I can feel the needle go in. Not good times at all. Repeat the procedure, including another root breaking in the second tooth which necessitates more sawing, and I'm done.

Total damage - About $700 (Apparently I need a night guard)
Total time in dentists chairs this morning - Over 3 hours

And they wouldn't even let me keep the bloody teeth I had asked for.

The only plus side out of this was not bothering to wash my face or anything when I got home, so I could freak my wife out. That lasted all of two seconds before she informed me that my breath smelled awful.

And I get the pleasure of a liquid diet for a week. Frigging wonderful.

just make sure this doesn't affect your drafting commish.

LOL, nah you should be fine. it's aggravating afterward, moreso than during in my opinion. mine were under the gumline so they had to really get in there and break sh*t up. i never developed dry sockets....but my ears felt like they wouldn't pop for a while and the general discomfort afterwards is just really a pain in the ass.

I hated it. But then again, i hate the dentist all around. You should still be able to enjoy the tourney.....you might want to take a few naps here and there just to avoid whatever pain the medicine won't take care of. But you'll be good.

Damn commish, i didn't know you were in Lakeridge. I used to rent a townhouse there. But now i'm working on buying my first house because it's time to gain some equity and quit throwing my money away.

I think he meant to say, "Make sure it DOES affect your drafting, commish." ;)

But yeah, it's not so bad. I had a tooth pulled way back in the day because my permanent tooth was coming in and my baby tooth hadn't fallen out yet. They didn't knock me out, they just numbed me, and I didn't cry. Although you're a little *****, so you might. :D

I got ya man, there's good news and bad news.

First, it sounds like good news as far as their reasoning for not knocking you out. Probably will mean less pain than most younger peeps that need their wisdoms dug out of their skulls. Right afterwards I didn't feel any pain, however, once the novacane wears off you will start to get aches and pains. The painkiller pills will help, and you will be able to enjoy watching basketball this weekend. In fact, the swelling and pain should start to subside by Saturday.

I forget the tips they gave on warm/cold rags, but the doctors will let ya know.

Be very very cautious about getting dry sockets. It isn't exactly rare to get. I got dry sockets on both my lower wisdom holes...not fun, I vividly remember how uncomfortable it was each minute of being awake. The biggest factors are food and your tongue. Do not underestimate your tongue moving along the wounds, it will loosen the bloodclot right out. The tricky part is that the wounds will itch, and even lightly scratching it with your tongue can do it. Good luck!

LOL, you've had a tooth pulled....but was it a wisdom tooth? Because when i was younger i had some molers pulled. They just put some dental plier things on there and popped em out.

But my wisdom teeth were much more like surgery and the pain, aggravation and experience on a whole were all much worse.

They said it wouldn't be necessary since they had come in halfway. I'd actually prefer they didn't, I need to be able to drive myself home afterwards.

Nah, I don't smoke.

Okay, this concerns me...are you saying I should or should not loosen the blood clots with my tounge? If you mean I shouldn't, I foresee this as an issue...I have a hard time leaving itching things alone. Oh, I only have two wisdom teeth, but they are the bottom ones.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alveolar_osteitis

"As with any extraction of a tooth, some pain is to be expected, as the gums surrounding the former location will be damaged to a certain degree. This is especially so in extractions of impacted wisdom teeth, which may not have properly erupted; in these cases, the gums are cut open to allow access to the tooth, then sutured shut.

However, a dry socket typically presents as a sharp and sudden increase in pain commencing 2–5 days following the extraction of a mandibular molar, most commonly the third molar. It can also be accompanied by a foul taste or smell.[1][2]

The pain, which often radiates up and down the head and neck, can be extremely unpleasant for the patient. A dry socket is not an infection, and is not directly associated with swelling because it occurs entirely within bone — it is a phenomenon of inflammation within the bony lining of an empty tooth socket. Because dry socket is not an infection, the use of antibiotics has no effect on its rate of occurrence."

"The pain from alveolar osteitis usually lasts for 24–72 hours. There is no real treatment for dry socket — it is a self-limiting condition that will improve and disappear with time — but certain interventions can significantly decrease pain during an episode of dry socket. These interventions usually consists of a gentle rinsing of the inflamed socket followed by the direct placement within the socket of some type of sedative dressing, which soothes the inflamed bone for a period of time and promotes tissue growth.[4] The active ingredients in these sedative dressings usually include natural substances like zinc oxide, eugenol, and oil of cloves. It is usually necessary to have this done for 2 or 3 consecutive days, although occasionally it can take longer. Because true dry socket pain is so intense, additional analgesics are sometimes prescribed."

You want the blood clots to stay in, for sure. When they fall out it exposes your nerve endings to the air. Yeah, not fun. Blood clots also block further bleeding (which becomes pesky), and promote the growth of gum tissue to fill in the hole. In short, the bloodclot is your best friend, but is a wimp. Make sure you don't suck on food or drinks too hard, either. McDonalds milkshakes and the lolly at the doc's office are nono's. Time to enter a temporary jello/pudding phase.

You getting all 4 at once?

I was told to do 2 and 2 on separate times when I have to get it done sometime next year probably. I think you only feel like crud for a day or two, don't expect to try and talk or eat much for a couple days, after that I think it's ok.

DGreenistheBest

He said he only had 2. I did all 4 at once though. Wasn't so bad. Course I didn't get dry socket, so I don't know how bad it could get.

I had my wisdom teef pulled while I was awake ....
They pumped my mouth full of novocaine and went to town.

I will give you fair warning .... the sound of the saw is a little scary ... sitting there with your mouth open for that long isn't comfortable ... and the sound of the metal tools against your teeth is incredibly irritating.

:)

Good luck.

I hate dental pain, and dentist's scare the absolute crappola out of me. Does anyone know of a Dentist in Prince WIlliam County that takes Delta Dental and doesnt scare me like my previous dentist? My previous dentist was some young guy that reminded me of "Auto" from the Simpsons. Long story short, he had his way with me like a 7 dollar prostitute, was rough with the needles, and when he puts his blue latex gloves on, he refers to them as his "Halloween Gloves".

Hmmm...this is the first I've heard any mention of a saw, are you putting me on? I already apologized for that other thing;)

Afterwards, you will think the pain isnt that bad, cause you are still all numbed up, and you wont take a pain pill cause you think you are alright, but a couple hours later you will regret it and it takes an hour for the pain pill to catch up. After the first ten or so hours though its not that bad, I played a volleyball tournament the next day.

I'm sorry ...
I'm not joking .... The dentist used some sort of saw and then a series of knives to open my gums up. I know it sounds brutal. And I hate to be honest here, but it is ....

Listening to the dentist pull your teeth out isn't cool.

Maybe since your teeth have already come halfway out they won't have to cut open the gum --- but my teef were impacted ... so they had to cut them out.

31 Teeth extracted in an eight day period in lated September and early October of 2004. 12 on the right side of my mouth taken out with only a local on one Monday and 19 across the front and left sides done under general anesthesia the next Monday (and they had to go back in to get bits they'd missed the first time).... Definitely not the most fun I've ever had. Especially since I refused to take the Percocet that the oral surgeon prescribed for me.

Hope that makes you feel a little better.

Um...yeah, I guess it does in comparison. Why did you need 31 teeth taken out, isn't that all but 1 tooth? And especially, why didn't you take the Percocet? Hell, I would have taken anything they would have given me faced with that much work.

I've got two bottles of pills now...one advanced strength Motrin and one Oxycontin. My wife doesn't want me to take the Oxy because it's addictive, but we'll see how I do with just the first.

If you could go through 31 of those on just local, more power to you. I think I discovered two is my limit. Anything more and I want to go to sleep first.

I needed them all taken out because they were in such bad shape it would have cost as much to rebuild them as to just take them out and get the dentures. I'd already had 1 wisdom tooth removed some years earlier.

I had the first 12 done on a local and that was a disaster. The last 19 were done under general and I'm very glad about that because he had to open that side back up after I came to in recovery (I don't remember it) because he'd left parts of two teeth in the lower jaw on that side. Not fun from what I've been told of my reaction to it.

I didn't take the Percocet because they make me loopy and they make me throw up. Neither of which do I enjoy on any level. I did two weeks taking 3 Advil every 4-6 hours.

Try getting a filling done while they barely used the Novacaine.

I hate the dentist because it sucks, but not because it hurts. Its more annoying leaving your mouth open for an hour.

Anybody else got a root canal?

I had to get a canal when I was 13. Man, that was no fun. The first part of it was actually pretty good. My dumbass dentist forgot to fill it up all the way, so 1 week later, I come back with an infected tooth. I get that fixed up and the root canal faster than expected. It took me 2 hours of drilling to fix it. I almost fell asleep while he was in my mouth.

Fast forward 2 years, the same tooth was infected in January. God, I hate dentists.
