He was drafted in the 7th to Detroit
What do you think of Army's decision to let forgo his active duty and work as a recruiter instead?

I agree. But I cannot complain. Dude risk his life for our country.
He should serve, like Roger did.

He IS serving. It's just in another capacity. He'll do the Army as a whole more service as a recruiter and as a spokesperson then he will on the ground in Iraq. Bravo zulu to him for getting selected in the draft.

Caleb played safety in college but could be a decent LB in the pro's.

I think it would be very cool if all of the Service Acadamey athletes who got drafted could delay military service until after their professional careers.
It would make programs like Army/Navy/Air Force competitive in the NCAA. I think that would be great to see any of those teams in the BCS

I have mixed feelings on this one. I think he could give the army a lot of publicity if he makes the team and excells, but I'm not sure if I want to see this become a trend. Because there may be situations where service academy guys are sitting on practice squads when they could be serving. I'm not sure how a situation like that would be handled. I also think that while having the academies improve on the field, it might be at the expense of others(athletes or non athletes) that want to use the service academies as they were intended to be used. It's a tough situation and I think that they need to decide on a case by case basis...just my opinion.

Actually any service academy member that is drafted, makes an active roster and plays for a minimum of 2 years can defer their service to a 6 year active reserve commitment as long as they assist in recruitment during the offseason.

Ah, I guess that takes care of my concerns then...some of them at least

West Point has also allowed their graduates to serve in the Army World Class Athlete program, as well. More or less, they're on active duty, training to become an Olympic Athlete.
They serve a similar role as Caleb Cambell will, as a recruiter. Seems like a good gig. Dan Browne (2 years ahead of me at USMA) served in this role and made the '04 Olympics in both the Marathon(65th) and 10,000m(12th).
