COWBOYS NOTES: Veteran Henry open to playing at safety
IRVING -- Anthony Henry is the Dallas Cowboys starting cornerback. But he is open to making a switch to safety, which could be a possibility if Pacman Jones is fully reinstated and first-round pick Mike Jenkins emerges.
Henry, a former safety at South Florida, realizes with the added depth at cornerback he could be moved to safety. He believes a move to safety would help prolong his career.
"At some point it could happen," said Henry, who is entering his eighth season. "I am not sure when. If they made the decision, I would be down [with the move]. I think I will make the switch eventually. That's what I have in my mind and plan on doing at some point. I know it's something I could learn and play well."
Henry, who led the Cowboys with six interceptions last season, started at free safety his first three years in college. He has worked some at safety in the dime package where Roy Williams usually lines up to cover the tight ends. It could allow the Cowboys to have four cornerbacks on the field.
"I understand it," Henry said. "Terence [Newman] got paid, they draft a corner in the first round and bring in Pacman. It does affect me. All I can do is play my best and try to be successful and let things fall where they fall."
Ellis returns
Disgruntled linebacker Greg Ellis participated in practice Wednesday, but elected not to chat with reporters.
Ellis remains annoyed that the Cowboys want to turn him into even more of a situational pass rusher, and are limiting his reps in practice with 2007 first-round pick Anthony Spencer.
"You never know how a person's body will wear and tear and how a season affects him," Cowboys defensive coordinator Brian Stewart said. "You want to keep a guy as fresh as possible as he gets older.... He's here now and prepared to practice and we're pretty happy about that."
Said defensive end Chris Canty: "Greg is going to give you 10 to 15 sacks every year. That's a given. He's a pro's pro."
Hamlin talks slowed
One of the smaller reasons the Cowboys gave Terrell Owens a three-year extension was to create room under the 2008 salary cap, which could hasten an extension for safety Ken Hamlin.
Hamlin, whom the Cowboys placed the franchise tag on earlier this off-season, is working out on his own. He wants a long-term extension.
A source said the Cowboys want to and expect to sign Hamlin before the start of the team's training camp in July. There is no indication, however, if the team will complete a deal with Hamlin before the start of the veteran minicamp next week.
Romo injures hand
Quarterback Tony Romo dinged his left, non-throwing hand during team drills. He was examined by the team's head athletic trainer Jim Maurer and had his left middle finger taped.
