The following is the full text of a letter written by former Orioles outfielder Jay Gibbons to all 30 major league teams, seeking a minor league contract. Gibbons, who was named in the Mitchell report, has been without a job since Baltimore released him in March. Writing this letter is both painful and humiliating. It has been almost six weeks since my release from the Orioles and I am still unable to land any opportunity at a second chance to play the game that I love. I am young, healthy and determined. I have acknowledged and apologized for the mistake that I made and writing this letter should be proof enough that I have indeed suffered for my mistake. I have faith and hope that some team will give me the chance to prove that I can not only be a productive player but also be a stellar member of their organization. My faith in a second chance has inspired me to work harder than I have at any time in my life. My faith has gotten me through this most difficult period in my life. All I need is a chance -- any chance -- anywhere. I am more than willing to begin the process of proving that I can and will be a productive major league player by playing in the minor leagues. As you know, I have played seven seasons in the big leagues and have hit 20-plus homeruns in three seasons and have hit .277 in three seasons (2003, 2005 and 2006). At 31 years old, I have NO DOUBT that my best baseball is ahead of me. I know that my agents at ACES have tried to land me an opportunity in the minor leagues but have been met with negative responses by each and every Organization. I am not blind to the fact that I have made a mistake and that mistake has raised doubt about my character and ability. It is important that you know that my indiscretions, while regretful, were made in an effort to heal a nagging wrist injury. I would encourage you to speak with anyone in this game, including players, coaches, front office etc. who know me. I am confident that everyone you speak with will vouch for my character. I respectfully and humbly request that you grant me the chance to play for your organization. I am so willing to prove myself as a player, and a person, that I will donate ALL of my minor league earnings to your Club's charity. In the event that I earn the right to play at the major league level, I will gladly donate a significant sum to that same charity. Once again, all I need is a chance and I will prove that I can be an extremely productive player and a great addition to your organization. Please feel free to contact me directly [phone numbers redacted]. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Jay Gibbons

Wow. I'd say teams are shying away less because of steroids and more because Gibbons isn't very good. It's been proven over and over that teams will overlook past indiscretions with banned substances if you can help them win.

Someone interviewed Brian Burres earlier this season about the difference in the clubhouse recently, and without saying it implied "we got rid of the jerks." Not saying Gibbons personally is a jerk, but I just didn't think he was a winning baseball player.

1. a professional writer wrote that letter
2. I agree he was just not that good, there were a lot of other players on that list that are still playing today.

As bad as the nats are at scoring runs NO WAY should we even think about signing this turd. He sucked even when he was on the juice and was always my favorite punching bag for the woes of the O's. He is trash that everyone should stay away from.

Pathetic. He just isn't that good period. He says he is "young" at 31. Not to be cynical, but 31 is at the edge of being young in life, and it definitley isn't young in the sports world. He's done for, go play in El Salvador.

Luke Scott can actually get on base.

.270 15HR guy with a putrid .315 OPB better be a stellar defensive catcher or MI to hang around, certainly not a corner OF.

He just doesn't have the plate discipline.

Gibbons agrees to deal with independent-league Ducks
Associated Press

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. -- Jay Gibbons agreed Monday to a contract with the minor league Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League after searching for 2½ months and failing to get an offer from any major league team.

Gibbons was released the Baltimore Orioles just before Opening Day after hitting .189 with no homers and four RBIs in 16 games during spring training. The 31-year-old outfielder is owed $11.9 million by the Orioles for 2008 and 2009 under the $21.1 million, four-year contract he agreed to in January 2006.

He was suspended for 15 days on Dec. 6 by commissioner Bud Selig following a media report that he received a shipment of the human growth hormone after January 2005, when it was banned by baseball. The suspension was rescinded April 11, when players and owners agreed to toughen their drug agreement

"Through our first 11 seasons, the Atlantic League has returned over 350 players back to affiliated organizations and 45 players to the major leagues," Ducks owner Frank Boulton said in a statement on the team's Web site. "We're hopeful Jay can help us win while proving that he's healthy and ready to contribute at the major league level."

Taken Baltimore from Toronto in the 2000 winter-meeting draft, Gibbons hit .260 with 121 home runs and 405 RBIs in 779 games over seven seasons for the Orioles. He batted .230 with six homers and 28 RBIs last season before surgery on his left shoulder on Aug. 14. It was the fourth time in seven seasons that injuries prevented him from appearing in 100 games.

07/22 : Gibbons on Brewers' radar
The News
Jay Gibbons is said to be on the Brewers' radar, according to the AP. Gibbons has been unable to find work with another club since getting released by the Orioles in March.

Our View
The Brewers are aggressively trying to win their first playoff spot since 1982. Gibbons could benefit from a fresh start with a contender, but may only be offered a minor league deal to start with.

Every major league dollar he can make in 08 and 09 is one less the O's have to pay him. So good luck Gibby!
