View Full Version : How would Gibbs have handled this years draft?

Just wondering what other people think of this....If Gibbs were to have stayed his last year, how differently do you think he would have picked as opposed to Zorn? With Gibbs being more of a 'run 1st' offence, would he have picked 2 WR's and a TE with the 1st 3 picks?

He would have traded the first to get a receiver then he would have handed all the picks to Gregg Williams, who would draft 2 safeties three corners and a linebacker.

He'd have drafted another WR under 5'9" and 17 Safeties.

we probably would have chad johnson and no 1st or 3rd round pick. The 2nd rounder would have been CB or Safety.

williams would have taken a corner, and we'd trade the rest of the picks to bears so we could get adam archuleta back cause hes a "heck of a ball player".

GREAT!!!!
I can't tell you how awesome it is to hear people who call themselves Redskin fans trash our HOF and legendary coach Joe Gibbs. Nothing like loyalty. You all must be some of the same fools who bought into the "Game has passed hime by" idealism.
Uhhh, was that before or after the 2 playoff appearances in 4 years.

Actually I am a staunch Gibbs supporter and defender. I do believe he would have traded a pick or picks to get a WR and let Williams fill out the defense again with the draft. Why do I think this? Because I hate Gibbs? NO you fool. Its because it fit the pattern of what he did before.

With all due respect, just because I recognize Gibbs' weaknesses does not make me or anyone else disloyal.
If you'd like to play that game: perhaps your "loyalty" is blinding YOU.

For Atlanta's two second round picks, we would have traded not only this year's first, but next year's first and second round picks.

On a serious note, impossible to know.
What I do know is we drafted the likes of ST, Landry, Cooley, Montgomery, Golston, Rocky, and picked up Heyer, Alexander, and others in the UDFA market.
So I think we would have gotten quality players regardless of position.

A: The world may never know!
B: Who gives a rat ass!!!
C: Trick question, he is no longer the coach.

Correct Answer is D.

TY,
Perhaps you should pull down your skirt and realize most of these posts have a hint of sarcasm to them.
If all things where equal I think Gibbs would have done better picking the personnel. I don't think Davis or Kelly would have been picked. At least one would have been a safety/cb and the other probably a LB. Which is what I think we really needed to do.
However I don't think all things would have been equal, as Gibbs obviously didn't value the draft as much as he should of. All men have flaws and this was one of Gibbs.

Joe Gibbs would have done the same thing Snyder and Cerrato tried to do and that is get Chad Johnson with no luck. They would have also been in the hunt for Asaunte Samuel. Joe Gibbs is a Veteran player type of guy. Look at what he drafted during his time here and how many of them are still with the team. I am a big Joe Gibbs fan but that strategy wasn't working. So the strategy they have employed now is something we needed to try. Infusing new life and youth into any organization is always good if you can do it without disrupting the chemistry of the team.

you all say that, but gibbs wanted to keep all the picks to draft players. That being said, I don't think he would have traded for a reciever. But yeah.. gregg probably would have got the draft picks.

He would have tried to call a time out and we would have lost our draft pick.
Then he would of proceeded to use a second timeout in an effort to challenge the ruling on the first one.
For calling back to back timeouts, we would be docked next years first rounder too...

gibbs completedly ignored the draft his entire tenure here, but for some reason this year he wouldnt have? we'll never know the answer but i strongly disagree.

He would have traded it all away to move up higher in the 1st, to pick a guy that no one else had going until the bottom of the 2nd.

we wont be in the market for a player demanding a contract like asante samuel until we get our cap straight a bit where we have future years already under the cap. sure we can get under the cap and sign a player like asante and handle the cap hit for the first year. but nowadays players are looking to make a ton of money in the first three years of the deal, which goes against the redskins mantra of backloading deals. to get to that point we'd have to go a lot younger than we are now, which means more value on the draft. i think its a good part of the reason we kept our draft picks this year and didnt sign any notable free agents. and once we get to that point, snyder will be able to have some free for alls on free agents again. this is provided the cba gets extended before any uncapped years. if gibbs were still team president, we most likely would have drafted for defense again

I think we would have offered more of an incentive to a couple of the veteran FAs out there (i.e. Hackett) and tried harder to keep Caldwell here. With more "veteran" WR depth, the draft would have gone something the following...
1st round Pick - Phillip Merling. We don't take a chance and get the last viable DE in the 1st round.
2nd round Pick - Thomas / Kelley (whichever was left)
3rd Round pick - A. Mario Manningham. - That "large receiver " we need to compete w/ mix in the mix.
B. Craig Stevens - Good blocking TE with good hands, but won't strtch the field.
3rd - Rhineheart would have still been the pick. Could have gotten a higher rated CB, but Chad has alot of potential. Other player could be
No fourth
5th - Owen Schmitt (FB) WVA - seemed like a real Gibbs type of guy. He's tough, and Sellers isn't getting any younger. Could line up at TE in a tight spot. If not Schmitt, then a CB here.
6th (#1): BPA for OT, DB, LB
(#2): BPA for OT, DB, LB
7th : Might have tried for Brooks if he's still here, or an available qb... but once again BPA.

We definitely wouldn't have picked Fred Davis, probably only 1 WR (Thomas most likely) and probably would have picked a corner.
But only Gibbs knows for sure.

Maybe he would have picked based on in game film. Every guy who made the motion or said something to the effect of praising God was immediately thrust to the top of the board.
"So we need linemen? Damn that kicker who hit the game winning 55 yarder. He praised God for all his success at least twice before he left the field. He's our guy."
And then by November when we are throttled by our division he can tell the media "We fought hard and our guys have a lot of character."

I think he would have done well too, and I think a lot of the same moves would have been made. Anyone who thinks Gibbs would have just given the picks to Williams, or not wanted to take WRs or TEs doesn't know Gibbs as well as they think they do.

Gibbs was a shrewed coach. I can't see much difference between what we did without him than what we would have done had he still been here.
Two notable exceptions would have been no Mathas, and no TE with the 3rd. We would have gone D-line on that pick.
This is my first post with my new SIG! Compliments of jujuskinsfan, one of our fellow Skins brethren who happens to live across the pond in France.
Thanks to this Fan, I now have the sig of my namesake:)

Hello men, I posted here in the past but it's been a long time, I used to post mainly in the tailgate, most of my football posting was done at another site which I will keep nameless for now. But it looks like I may be here to stay. Your all welcome for the warning! :yikes:
Gibbs was just not a personnel guy, and although we didn't necessarily draft for immediate need, I believe we had one of the most productive drafts since Bobby Beathard, I could see this entire draft not only making this team, but having a big impact their first season. I think Zorn and co with this draft have laid the ground work for the future, reason? IMO we wont have to draft any more offensive skill players for a long time to come, and we were able to keep most of our draft in tact for next year, giving up a 7th to take a shot on Arasmus James no problem there, but under Gibbs that pick would have been a 4th rd pick, or at least that is how it always seemed to go with any trade we made, giving up way to much in trades really retarded the growth of this team.

He would have drafted Philip Merling in the first round and one of the WRs in the second round...
Third round still Chad Reinhardt and 4th round his OL teammate...
Then the rest won't matter
