Many of us are interested in the Brooks/Frost match-up. From what I've heard, it looked like Frost may have had the upperhand. From the USA Today team report from today:
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/redskins/home.htm came this very interesting part on rookies:
Rookie to watch: Wide receiver Malcolm Kelly — He was picked after fellow receiver Devin Thomas in the second round, but Kelly could have the biggest impact of any of Washington's 10 draft choices - besides fifth-rounder Durant Brooks, who's favored to wrest the punting job from incumbent Derrick Frost — because of his size.
This is the first time I have heard that Brooks was the favorite to win the punting job. is this an error in reporting or does any DC fans hear the same from the local outlets and rumor mill.
I didn't think Frost was that bad, but Brooks is a very interesting prospect.

Based on Frost inconsistency the last few years, I would say Brooks has the upper hand, but nothing can really be decided until a few pre-season games are played and we can really see what Brooks has to offer.

Yeah, we've been talking about this for a while. If Brooks doesn't beat out Frost, then he was a wasted pick, but if he beats out Frost (and lives up to his potential) then he could be a great steal.
What I wonder is if there will be an actual competition of if Frost will be cut outright when we sign Brooks (due to the lack of roster space).

Brooks was somewhat handpicked by Special Teams coach Danny Smith. I would be surprised it he didn't win the job. If he punts during training camp and the preseason like he did during his college career, I think he's a shoe-in to get the job.

I think so too. Gotta be tested in some games but I'm pulling for Brooks. Frost hits some stinkers at the WORST possible times.

I dont see Frost beating Brooks out in any way shape or form. Brooks would have to completely collapse and I dont see it happening.

We really have no idea how the two are doing, thanks to a certain beat reporter only focusing on who wasn't practicing, and not who was.

Punting is a skill that has almost exact career over to the pro game. I don't see Brooks being unsuccessful in the NFL. He'll be the punter.

Exactly.
It's not like he has to worry about different schemes and such. He needs to catch it and kick it. Sometimes directionally. It isn't too complicated.

Preseason punting will be alot more interesting this season.

So are you saying we'll be hoping for 3 and outs in the preseason?

thats not what we want, its what we expect. In the preseason we're going to have a bunch of subs going against a bunch of nobodys. There will be a lot of bad plays with the occasional highlight reel. The punting may be the best part of those games.

barring an offseason injury to Brooks, i would be shocked if Frost is our punter next season

There was a blurb about this on hogshaven.com
Apparently, the team has not expressed who the current frontrunner is. From the article, it seems as if the competition is neck and neck. This means that we may not have a declared winner until after pre-season. Durant seems to have the better leg, but has inconsistency when aiming. This surprises me because all of the draft reviews said that downing the ball within the 20 was one of his best attributes in college. There was also a mechanical error reported. They say that Durant kicks across his body, but they are working with him to correct this, so that he can get more power out of his kicks. I dunno if any of you have seen this kid kick, but he has a boot. Adding more power to his leg is a scarey thought.

Whoever performs better will get the job. if its a toss-up, Brooks gets the nod because we spent a draft-pick on him.
This is vinnys first draft and its very important to "justify" the picks made. I mean, how could you not say we had a good draft when its we have SIX picks (at minimum) making the roster - if six draftpicks make the roster, it means they were upgrades over what we had a year before... which means Vinny did a really good job.

I am so sick of Derrick Frost, he always chokes when we need a good punt.

I want to agree with you expect there is one thing that nags at me:
Everytime Frost does his i can kick i cant kick routine and they bring in competition he blasts the ball like 65 yds and hangs it up there all day for like two weeks and the goes back to sir shanks a lot
Brooks will be good but frost will look like he is Ray Guy (not just an award winner) until we cut the Brooks and he is signed by an NFC east team and then he will be line driving 35 yarders again and Durant brooks makes the pro bowl in 3 years

With the distance and hang time reported for Brooks....our new deep receiver threat may be Thrash at the 1 foot line. HTTR

It certainly sounds like he'll have a leg-up on Frost, being hand-picked and all.:D

Before he was resigned, didn't Derrick Frost pretty much not want to be with the Washington Redskins but no one else wanted him?

Hopefully Danny Smith knows this and is more likely to give the young guy a chance to develop. Remember that we also had David Akers before he became one of the best in the league.

While Brooks does have a better leg, are you really going to take USA Today as a credible source for how the competition is/will going/go?
Not me. I'll wait til training camp.

Frost and Brooks are both inconsistent. If Brooks can improve on that, Frost is what he is. Brooks has much more up swing. I think its Brooks to lose.

What are the chances we carry 2 punters into pre-season? I would assume Brooks has the upper-hand since we spent a pick on him but Frost has experience.

This is why Brooks will have it won about a week into camp this year...

Yeah but it's also about consistency. It will be an interesting fight through training camp. I think Brooks will get it in the end.

Brooks will definitely be a big foot kicker in Madden 09

Punters often don't hook on in the NFL until they are with their second or even third NFL teams. That is the concern here. The repetition and consistency needed in camp often takes a toll on rookie kickers and they often lose out to a cagey vet who knows to keep his job he doesn't necessarily have to be the longest punter but the most consistent at keeping the ball over 40 yards without shanks.

i will puke if Frost makes the roster. Look at the mistake we made with Akers. We didn't think he was that good and look what happened to him. I'd rather have a punter who needs to improve his accuracy to getting the ball down before the endzone, but who can still kick the **** out of the ball. at least the other team wont be starting before their own 20
