SHARPTON’S GROUP WEIGHS ACTION ON LATEST IMUS REMARK (http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/06/23/sharptons-group-weighs-action-on-latest-imus-remark/)
The comments made by radio icon Don Imus on Monday regarding Cowboys cornerback Adam Jones have caught the attention of Rev. Al Sharpton, who led the charge to take down Imus in the wake of his comments regarding the Rutgers women’s basketball team.
“It has been reported to me that statements were made by Mr. Imus this morning and National Action Network has monitored his show since his return,” Sharpton said in a statement. “I find the inference of his remark disturbing (http://wcbstv.com/seenon/don.imus.race.2.755163.html) because it plays into stereotypes. Any use of stereotypes is always counterproductive. We will determine in the next day or so whether or not his remark warrants direct action on our part as we did in April of last year.”
We’re not sure why Sharpton’s group needs to take a day or so to decide what to do, unless the question of whether it’s right or wrong to take action is determined based on whether it’s right or wrong with respect to the broader interests and agenda of Sharpton’s group.
Imus is expected to address the issue on Tuesday morning during his show, which means that someone outside of New York City might actually be listening to the show on Tuesday morning.
Based on an e-mail he sent to the New York Times, Imus is expected to explain that his comments were intended to reflect that Jones’ race made him a target for police attention. “I meant he was being picked on because he’s black (http://tvdecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/06/23/there-he-goes-again-more-racial-comments-from-imus/),’’ Imus wrote.
Imus also told the Times that he’ll raise the issue with comedian Dick Gregory, an African-American, during Tuesday’s show. Gregory was already scheduled to appear on the show to discuss the passing of George Carlin. “We’ll see what [Gregory] thinks,’’ Imus told the Times. “I mean . . . come on!’’
No, Don, you come on. You don’t get the benefit of the doubt on this one. If you had a history of pointing out that police unfairly target black men for handcuffs, fingerprints, and mug shots, then your words would be assessed from that context. Your history instead suggests that you’ve had yet another slip of the tongue, and that you meant not that Jones has been arrested because the police like to arrest black men, but that he has been in trouble because he is a black man.

The worst part of this (besides Sharpton) is that it's making Pacman out to be some kind of "victim". And Pacman is playing up every minute of it too. I'll bet that the Commish will reinstate him now, for this year, to make "amends" to Pacman for this horrible racist attack.
Ugh. Thanks Imus. Please shut the **** up and die already.

We all know Jones is a piece of ****, but how can they give Imus another show. It doesn't matter Imus was wrong once again.

Well, welcome to the new Amerika, sarcasm is against the law. People with no backbone and weak knees cower in fear. I guess the death of Carlin closes the book on comedic speech. Aren't the people who listen to anything Sharpton has to say tired of playing the perpetual victim's yet?

The sad part is if he isn't reinstated, I can see Goodell being trashed for racial discrimination.

You know what bothers me about this whole thing is that if Reverand Al Sharpton would have said the same thing or anything close to that it would have been a big deal. Then there would have been a big protest and an outcry of racial overtones from the black community. But because Don Imus said it then it is a racial slander against a black athlete. Don't get me wrong, I am no big Don Imus fan and don't like the guy but come on. Al Sharpton is just as big of a problem as Don Imus or any other guy on both sides of the racial fence. I for one am tired of hearing all of this crap that comes out of Al Sharptons mouth and what portays himself to be. How many Reverands do you know that have no church, expensive clothes, is in politics, and has their own radio show? Only one other guy fits that bill and that is Jesse Jackson but he doesn't have a radio show I know of. What is Al Sharpton's purpose or job? Where does he get his money from? To me all he is a "Used Car Salesmen" and a con artist.

Michael Irvin also had two "incidents" last year. He was allowed to finish his contract.
I bet most people know about the Romo one, but I'd assume the majority of people don't even KNOW about the other one.

I guess somethings are better left un-said when it comes to the poor football player that fell out of grace for being arrested 6 times and being at a bar when someone was shoot. Please lets not say anything that might get someone upset and a thread be started. I just think their is a double standard on what people can say on the radio.

Imus was fired for far less than "Tony Romo's great-grandma musta got down with slaves, because I ain't nevah seen a white guy dat afletic."
Not to mention....
"Wes Welker ain't dat good. He gets lucky and beats a brutha once. Then day like, 'man, I can't believe dat little white boy just beat me. Then they play up to tight on him instead of giving a cushion, and dat's how he git all his other yards."
The Welker story isn't even common knowledge. And again, BOTH of those statements deserved immediate dismissal. Nappy-headed ho isn't in the league of EITHER of those.
So it's actually a triple-standard. Irvin got away with both comments, and the mainstream media didn't even report the second.
Oh, and who's more relevant? A pro-football hall of famer who was on the nation's preeminant sports network, and played for one of the most visible organizations in all of sports? Or an old talk-show host.

Do you know definitively that Irvin has sought broadcast employment since his contract at ESPN ended?
Imus was FIRED. He sought employment elsewhere and got it. Irvin can do the same thing if he chooses too.
My point remains the same. Imus (and hell, Rush Limbaugh, by the SAME employer as Irvin) were fired for FAR LESS than Irvin said.
There absolutely IS a double standard, and it's crap.

I dont know definitively if Irvin sought employment or not. It doesnt make any difference.
I know Imus has now twice made dumbass racial comments, and as of today, he's still on the air. Irvin twice made dumbass racial comments, and he's not on the air anymore. So i dont see a double standard, except the white guy is still broadcasting and the black guy is not.
And i dont think Limbaugh and Imus's comments are any more or less benign than Irvin's at all. In fact, i think Imus' first gaffe is the worst because he went after amatuers, not professionals.
Edit: In fact, of the 3 people you brought up, the 2 white guys are still on the air, the black guy isnt. So i agree, there is a double standard.

Come on, Peeb.
Black guy spouts off, keeps job until end of contract, and as far as we know is living comfortably off of his NFL millions.
White guy spouts off, gets fired, and is under pressure again.
Apples to dumptrucks, IMO.
You can't seriously equate Irvin finishing his contract, and quite possibly not seeking further broadcast employment to Imus being fired.

Wait wait wait.
#1, so what if Irvin is living comfortably off his NFL millions? Did he not earn it? Also, im sure if Imus gets fired today, which he hasnt, he isnt going to go find a soup line.
#2, your last sentence should read (if you want to be intellectually honest): White guy spouts off, gets fired, spouts off AGAIN, and is under pressure again.
You can't seriously equate Irvin finishing his contract, and quite possibly not seeking further broadcast employment to Imus being fired.

Absolutley you can. #1, Imus has now twice made racial comments. He's still on the air. So is the Greaseman if you get him in WV. Similar situation, except his racial comment had to do with dragging black people behind pickup trucks.
#2, Michael Irvin was hired in the first place to make controversial statements. Imus was hired to have a radio show that sells ad time. No one is going to sponser a racist.
#3, im not saying one is worse than the other. IMO BOTH of them should :stfu: I cant believe at this point anyone thinks Imus should be allowed to continue. He isnt that good at his job in the first place.
