View Full Version : 2009 Free Agent class: Does Snyder go shopping again?
SkinsHokieFan
June-25th-2008, 07:49 AM
The obvious reason for hoarding the cash early this offseason was to make a play on Chad Johnson
That didn't happen.
Now reason number 2 why they kept the cash ready. Next year's FA class has some pretty solid players in it to pick up
With a little more cap room, does the FO go shopping again next year?

Nah, class looks weak. Anybody worth looking at will be franchised or extended by years end.
I think we need to look more into getting our own guys like McIntosh, Montgomery and some others extended.

Depends who is out there and what is needed, and what we are looking at draft wise

Maybe the 2008 season should play itself first. Besides most of the top UFAs will be locked up or franchised before they hit the open market.

I have a feeling we will probably be looking at a cornerback next year, with springs getting older, and rodgers being a big question mark right now
watch out for Nnamdi Asomugha's name to pop up next offseason

He's had his eye on that Charlie Frye for years.

Pretty slim pickens out there.
Only stud I see is Julius Peppers.
With Pete Kendall and Shawn Springs on their last year, and Philip Daniels' career winding down, I'm thinking DE, G and CB are where we're hunting.
If they like Rinehart to take over at LG, that's one less problem.

Peppers is washed up. No way I pay him anything cose to the money he will want. I have heard rumblings for a while Asomugha wants to go to New Orleans. He was born in Louisana and stated during his draft he wanted to play for the the Saints. That being said....I like him as a player and would love to see him take over the CB position here.

I think we are going to need a linebaker pretty badly. McIntosh's knees are degenerative, Marcus Washington is oft injured an getting older, and London Fletcher can only last so much longer. H.B. Blades will be a solid starter. But I don't think Khary Campbell can be a reliable starter.
DEFENSIVE END OF COURSE! They will no doubt address this.
Corner definately. Next year we shall see our draft picks go to defensive players in the first couple of rounds I imagine.
To answer the OP, I would think there would have to be some one really worth taking for them to go all out. Julius Peppers might be one. But if he gets back to form, I don't see the Panthers letting him go.

I'd be all about getting Vilma too!

There is not one person I would throw big time money at. However, depending on how certain players play this year we could have some depth additions from this class.

We go after Peppers and Asomugha leaving the FO to resign the better of these 3 Evans, Golston and Montgomery who are FA's and resign Torrence as a back up and cut Springs for the younger better version CB from the raiders!:2cents:

I don't think Snyder will "go shopping again." He might make a splash with one maybe two FA signings. Hopefully he doesn't break the bank though.
We could add some decent CB help with Asomugha or Dunta Robinson. At LB Vilma and Bart Scott caught my eye.
Honestly nobody in the 09 class looks like they will be worth the investment. Building through the draft seems like the best way to make this team better now and for the future.

If Vinny and Dan see this year as a success when its all said and done, they'll probably take the same approach next year. If this year tanks, Zorn may be gone, along with new team building strategy. I'm feeling pretty positive about this year though. I think we have a good year and keep a good thing going.

June-25th-2008, 10:27 AM
If the James trade ends up working out then I don't see Vinny going after a DE in free agency, especially if Chris Wilson is able to provide 6 sacks on his own. I'd more likely see them going for a DT if a decent one is available.
If Tryon becomes a solid back up and Rogers returns from his injury I could see Vinny thinking Rogers, Smoot and Tryon are solid enough and not bother going all out to pay a lot for a free agent CB.
I could see them addressing the OL and LB units, though.

A few good WR's we could go after if our rookies don't look to shape up(Housh, Colston, or Brandon Jones from Tennessee). But hopefully our draft picks will show some potential and upside this season so we won't even have to worry about that, and try to get another solid draft in 09'.

Peppers is intrigung but at the other side scary becuase he has Dana Stubblefield written all over him. Has Rod Gardner listed as a Chief, I thought they cut him

Just say no to Peppers.
He'll cost too much and he disappeared last year--starting 14 games and recording 2.5 sacks.
Asomugha is an option, but will also probably want a big contract.
I say stick with the draft.

First off, I am not sure about our cap situation next year, but looking at our free agents, we don't have many to re-sign. Montgomery, Golston, and Doughty look to be the only required to be re-signed.
Not bad planning.

Dunta Robinson... Sign 'em Up
He tore his ACL and completely tore the hamstring muscle off of the bone.
It was so ugly CBS refused to reshow some of the TV angles.
Now he's only 26 but I don't particularly want any more CBs with serious knee injuries.

When we cut springs old ass we will be able to afford Asomugha he can get paid what we were paying Springs 8 mil a yr!

Vilma or Channing Crowder possibly...
J. Peppers will be high on people's lists too slow season notwithstanding.
Chris Gamble would be a nice addition.
Some good talent should be available. I can definitely see us being players. DS always states he will be aggressive when the market is right.

Kelvin Hayden Dunta Robinson and Asomugha are players I would be interested in. Poppinga and Vilma would be interesting as well but other then those players I say lets see what everyone does this year and where we are drafting next year.

I think it all depends on how the season goes and what the draft class looks like. I wouldn't mind seeing them go after the Raiders CB with the rididculous name, Asomugha. I think it would be cool to see the landry brothers playing together at the safety position. I think with all the additions at that position, someone will work out for us and it won't be a need for us. I think the Skins will continue to look to improve through young talent via the draft.

I may be wrong, but if a new CBA isn't in place the salary cap won't increase in 2009 and if that happens we won't be signing anyone. Most likely we would have to cut some players that we wouldn't normally want to cut.

I could be wrong, but I don't think so. Especially if he truly believes that there will be no cap in the 2010 season. I think he'll want to hang on to the cash and maybe extend a couple of players contracts for one year, then be ready to open the floodgates in 2010 if there is no Salary Cap. Of course all bets are off if the owners wimp out and agree to a deal with the NFLPA prior to that 2010 season.

I don't think we'll see an uncapped year, it would screw over the smaller owners so bad and I think it would really mess the league up.
By the way welcome back.

But Danny is no where close to as wealthy as some of the other owners.
So we might not be all that well off.

True, but in my mind I'd rather Lose while playing under the Right system than to Win under the Wrong one; but I know I'm in the minority on that issue. I'm willing to take the chance that Danny is willing and able to spend the money to make the team successful in that system.

The myth I have attempted to break for months
Owners will not dip into thier personal pockets to pay players in today's NFL. Or else Seattle would be giving out signing bonuses left and right. Even the New York Yankees have a budget they adhere to based on their revenue
The Redskins would still be very very competitive in a cap-less NFL

You're probably not into video games, at all, but I'd love to see you play NFL Head Coach. I haven't played it but all you do is coach and manage the team. It would be interesting to see if your methods worked.

It all depends on the future of the league and if the salary cap remains intact. If the cap goes away then we should look at:
Peppers
WHOSYOURMAMMA
Brady Poppinga
Jeff Saturday
Mike Peterson
Jonathan Vilma
Asomugha
If the cap stays in tact, the only one we need to consider is Brady Poppinga because he is a lesser known guy but performs pretty well. He would come at a much more reasonable contract than most of the guys that would be up for consideration. Asomugha should also be considered but we don't need to break the bank on the guy and that is what it would cost. If the cap stays we need to build through the draft.

We should have some money for Asomugha after we drop Springs hefty contract! Poppinga would be a nice pick up as well!

No, I'm not into that sort of video game. If it was just the coaching end maybe, but the price of a bag of peanuts, a bottle of beer, the lower deck seating, or the parking has absolutely no interest for me.
That's why the Owner and the Coach shouldn't be the same person. They have different venues to deal with.

cb from houston duata robinson, peppers, and another cb then draft lb and oline. we have to resign dt montgomery golston. we would do well to sign bently c/g right now . it would stengthen our line either at guard or center. and if someone goes down would make us more able to keep going and not bottoming out like we have.we need our oline to be as strong as possible.i hope they wake up.
