O's have interest in deal for infielder Lopez
by Ken Rosenthal

The Orioles, desperately seeking a shortstop, have engaged in substantive conversations with the Nationals about a trade for infielder Felipe Lopez, according to major league sources.

The Nationals reportedly are close to signing shortstop Cristian Guzman to a two-year contract extension for an unknown dollar amount and are unlikely to retain Lopez as a free agent after this season.

I guess he'd be better than the failboat of Bynum, Hernandez, Fahey and Cintron. Plus we'd get him for pretty much next to nothing.

Nats fans? Any substantive info? I heard he has a bit of an attitude problem...

He has been hot recently. Makes errors at critical times. Better suited for AL team as he can be free to hit at the bottom of the order without fear of pitcher behind him

Completely honest...you can have him. Among Nats fans, Felipe Lopez is known as "FLop". Apparently he played pretty well back when he was in Cincy, but he's been pretty awful this year and last.

He's a fairly talented infielder, but he's prone to making just awful mistakes out of what appears to be laziness or disinterest. He has been spoken to about things like not running out ground balls, etc.

He has some skills--again, he can handle the glove when his head's in the game, and he has some speed. But sometimes it looks like he just doesn't give a **** out there. He's the opposite of what you would call a "fan favorite."

Last year he was in a full season-long slump that he attributed to some personal stuff that he never really identified, and I respect his privacy and don't need to know what was going on in his life. But this year, after starting off OK, he seems to have reverted to last year's form.

And the thing is, on a losing club like the Nats, one thing that just can't be tolerated is a lack of hustle or effort. We're only good enough to beat teams when we play fundamentally sound baseball and just out-hustle the opponent. So when Lopez appears to be loafing it, it's aggravating.

Having said all that, maybe a change of scenery would do him some good. He's got some talent. But man he can be frustrating to watch.

He is all yours. I don't know whether he will be good with you guys or not, but he has been nothing short of awful here. As long as your willing to trade a guy back who does not have a huge contract he's all yours.

Felipe Lopez is awful. He can't field, hit, and he's a head case. Good riddance.
