It's beautiful...if my mom lived out here it would be perfect. I miss her so much, so I want to return to the east coast at some point. I miss the seasons and being around her and my dogs. Plus, schools are better in VA...teaching in California has been an eye-opening experience. Especially since I just taught middle school last year. Don't know how you handle high schoolers....maybe they mature a little bit by then.

I won't. I'm here for another year at least. We're signing our lease for our apt. in a few weeks. And I had an interview to teach elementary school the other day...it went really well and I got a call Fri. that said, "we won't make our decision until late Tuesday, but we just want to let you know we're still thinking of you"...so fingers are crossed.

And you're a loser. We're hoppin on the 3something coaster and heading down to the game. I bought these sweet Padres shoes the other day. Can't wait to wear them, the dork that I am ;)

I am thinking about moving to Florida. I have fallen in love with Florida. I think it is beautiful.....but I know leaving Texas would be so difficult. I imagine leaving my family would be the hardest thing I would ever have to do.

California schools are very different. I remember when I went to Alaska, there was a couple who taught in California on the same plane. We discussed education and it was very different from Texas. I think Florida will prove to be the same in differences.

My dad lives in Florida..near Tampa. It's just too hot down there for me, but some people can't think of anywhere better.

Teaching in California...I just feel so stifled. I mean, in VA we have the SOLs and we take tests every year, but in Cali... we're "governed" by little districts, micromanaged, and always worrying about job security. They are CRAZY about test scores out here, and I feel the pressure, so I know the kids do. In VA...I don't know if it's because I worked in Fairfax County and it's such a high scoring district already..but I never felt the kind of pressure out there as I do out here. We let kids be kids in VA, and the county wasn't at our throats every 5 minutes making sure we were using all available time for instruction. Elementary schools here? Teachers don't have a prep period. No PE, Art, Music, etc etc. It's horrible. In my old school in VA we had all of that PLUS things like chorus and pull out gifted programs.

Texas is NUTS about test scores. And as everyone kows, NCLB got its start in Texas with the testing that was required when Bush was our governor.

I can't imagine any of my teachers going withOUT a conference. No teacher organizations out there lobby for these things?

Taking the worry off of her mind is a big part of it. It was stress that got in the way of things before, so the less she has to worry about, the better.

Heck, we've basically had a relationship for most of the last 17 years. I know she's the love of my life. So what. We can't live together. Oh well. :)

I think teachers might get 15 minutes during Recess...I think they actually hire people to watch the kids during recess. But 15 minutes??? They expect you to prep before or after school.

It's expressed in our contract that we cannot strike...and the VTA (my district's teacher association) doesn't do much. Teachers haven't gotten a COLA in about 5 years. There's a LOT of distaste for the superintendent and the board in the district where I work. They don't want things taking away from instructional time. The kids take benchmark tests about 5 times a year, and that's in addition to their end of the year standards tests. I was also at the highest scoring school in the district, one of the highest scoring middle schools in San Diego.

Also, the principal can't write letters of recommendation. If you wanted one, you'd have to go to the secretary, fill out this form about things you did during the year, and she would type it up then he would sign it. It's horrible! But.... there is not turnover out here like there is in VA. So it's tough to find a job. Very tough.

ALSO...when you get hired, your first year in the district you get hired as Temporary. So your contract ends at a specific time and you get a letter. Even if the principal wants to keep you and he has a spot for you, you have to reapply. If someone else who has higher tenure wants to come and teach your same subject at your school, you're screwed. The principal has like NO say. Even second-year teachers get hired as "temporary". I shared rooms with a girl who had been teaching in my district for 4 years and she's not tenured yet. She just got hired THIS year as Probationary 2. And she is an EXCELLENT teacher. She says that next year she'll probably be signing tenured, but it's ridiculous. She is a much better teacher than a lot of the tenured teachers at that school, but they can't get fired.

The politics of it all give me a headache. But, I need a job. So I deal with it. Sometimes you just gotta deal for a little while, get your foot in the door somewhere.

P.S. Sorry for jackin' this thread!!!!

I found my dad on MySpace.

I'll let you know whether that was good or bad when I figure it out myself.

A: Bad Bump
B: If you are finding lost relatives...a story needs to be involved (and not a toe story).

Then...

A: Myspace is 'jumping the shark'
B: The harder you try publically, the harder it is.

this HAS to be a joke.

please, for the love of everything, tell me this is a joke!

Yeah who uses Myspace unless you are a 15 year old girl. :silly: No I actually have an old account that I created hoping to reconnect with old friends but I never really used it. I have a Linkedin account and Facebook which have been better in locating old friends.

There is mine. I deleted my old account a few months ago, missed it like a jerk and started this one around 2 days ago.
