Sherrill rewarded with All-Star selection
O's closer is second in the American League with 27 saves
BALTIMORE -- When the Orioles traded Erik Bedard to the Mariners during the offseason, everyone expected that an All-Star was changing hands between the two teams. They were right, but they had the wrong guy. Baltimore closer George Sherrill was named to his first All-Star team on Sunday in recognition for his solid half-season with the Orioles.
"Hopefully I can do this organization and these guys in here an honor, do well and represent the club well," said Sherrill, who was named to the team by American League manager Terry Francona, who doubles as the field boss of division rival Boston. "It's drastic, the changes that happen in this game. I'm just in a really fortunate position."
"I hadn't been doing that well lately," Sherrill said. "Brian's put up great numbers. [Aubrey Huff] has put up great numbers [and] Jimmy [Johnson] has had a great year. It is an honor to be named, but I wasn't really expecting it."

Fans can help Roberts with Final Vote
O's second baseman seeking berth to third All-Star Game
BALTIMORE -- For months, Brian Roberts has been the only Oriole with any traction in the All-Star balloting. And if form holds true, the second baseman just may find himself in Yankee Stadium for his second straight All-Star berth. Roberts, a two-time All-Star, was selected as one of five candidates in the American League for the All-Star Game Final Vote.
"I don't know a whole lot about it except that I don't think I'll win," Roberts quipped after Baltimore's 11-10 loss to Texas. "You probably need to be playing at home and you probably need to be playing in a big market."
Fans will have the power to choose between Roberts and four other candidates -- Chicago's Jermaine Dye, New York's Jason Giambi, Kansas City's Jose Guillen and Tampa Bay's Evan Longoria -- for the AL's final slot. Roberts, the leadoff locomotive for Baltimore's surprising start, will certainly have the support of manager Dave Trembley.
"I hope everybody gets their machines out and votes for Roberts. He's deserving," Trembley said of his leadoff hitter after Sunday's game. "I'm going to get my son to help me."

It's a shame that Pedroia will start when he's really the 3rd best second baseman in the AL.
It wouldn't be an All Star game w/o a tremendous reach... this year, "The Players" selected aging and putrid Jason Varitek. yeeeeeeesh. He's not batting his weight.
