View Full Version : Last Year for Sonny, Sam, Larry?

Last Year For Sonny, Sam, Larry? - 7/18 - DCRTV hears rumblings that this could be the last year for the Redskins game-day radio team of Sonny Jurgensen, Sam Huff, and play-by-play man Larry Michael. Next year it could be Mike Patrick doing play-by-play, with Joe Theismann and John Riggins adding color. At least that's what a reliable local radio source tells us. You'll recall that Jurgensen and Huff have been calling Skins' games for several decades, having previously been paired with play-by-play man Frank Herzog.....

(Maybe this should be merged into one of the existing radio threads, but it is new information).

I'd miss Sonny, but I'd be glad to see Larry out of the booth. I can't stand him. Although, Theismann wouldn't be much of an improvement. I like Mike Patrick, though.
And I'll take this opportunity to express again my feelings that they should BRING BACK FRANK.

Patrick can be annoying...but I think it would be a good annoying for a local team. You kind of want your play by play guy to be overly excited for a good play. (And I think Patrick is genuine as opposed to Larry who seems completely contrived at all times).

Mike Patrick...did a little research on him. Apparently did some work with WJLA. A local guy with Joey T. and Riggins. Sounds like a splendid idea.
Too bad I won't be in D.C. to enjoy it if it happens :(

Still, Patrick, Joey T and Riggins would be a significant upgrade over the current booth.
Larry Michael is terrible and Sonny & Sam are just tired.

I only thought it was a matter of time before changes were going to happen with the broadcast team. It is sounding more and more that Sam Huff just doesn't have it anymore. and that they probably should retire Sonny along with him, since pairing him up with a younger guy just wouldn't work.
I kinda wish that they would find another defensive guy to put in the booth. Charles Mann is really the only name I can come up with who is "broadcast quality".

I tend to agree. While I don't necessarily think he's a bad play by play guy, I think his talents are much better in show-type environments. I think he does a great job with Redskins Lunch considering the resources he has... basically an emtpy room and a mic.

I don't get it either Zoony. I mean you can tell that he's a total homer, but that's his job.
He's largely responsible for bringing us all of the great content on the site, nightly news, Redskins Lunch/Nation, pre and post game stuff.

Sonny and Sam were great, but we will have to replace them one day. If it means getting Mike Patrick, Joey T. and Riggo/Doc, we'd be much better off in the long run. As an O's fan, I really miss having Jon Miller doing the radio broadcasts and it is very important to have a strong radio game crew. Funny this gets mentioned, because for the last year I've thought about what it would be like to have Mike Patrick and Joey T. doing the games on radio, since they're not doing NFL games on ESPN anymore, and they already do our preseason games.

It's not really his choice in the end. I can see Sonny staying one or two years with a new booth. But he seems irritable as hell with both Larry and Sam half the time. I can't imagine there would be much immediate chemistry with new partners.
The man is 73 years old. He's been on the air for 34 years. How long can you really expect him to do this?
I think having Sonny and Sam ride off into the sunset together would be appropriate. Make the final home game a big love-in for them.

I would absolutely be heartbroken if Sonny were forced out although I'd be OK with it if it were his choice. I just don't want to see him Favre'd. He's earned the right to go out on his own terms, IMO.
I've always liked Mike Patrick but I question how well Joe and Riggo would mesh. Then again, Joe and Paul McGuire used to crack me up with their bickering so maybe it could work. I'm torn between Riggins and Doc Walker. I think either one could work pretty well.

I agree. Sure seems like Joe T. is falling more and more in love with the sound of his own voice, but Mike Patrick has always been a solid play-by-play guy, he has a good feel for the proper emotional delivery depending on the game situation. He's also excellent at calling college hoops, as I'm sure most of you on the E coast already know. (ACC tournament anyone?)

It'll be tough to listen to a different group, but I can't imagine they break up the team now and mix Patrick with Sonny or someone like that. Keep the current group in tact or get rid of all of em.
I'm a big fan of Sonny, the other two don't always seem right to me. They just get too many calls wrong, I guess its old age.
If Riggo is on, I want someone to keep count how many times he says "and it seems to me..." during the game.
Personally I'm more worried about the postgame show with Jacoby/Sheehan. That show makes my ears bleed, and it's not because of how Jacoby talks, it's like they don't screen calls that well and they put some idiot callers on the air.. my god it's awful.

I don't hate Larry as a person--I'm sure he's a nice enough guy. I have no idea because I've never met him. But to me his voice is just downright unpleasant to listen to and I don't find him entertaining, interesting or engaging.
When I hear radio play-by-play voices like Merrill Reese in football or Jon Miller in baseball, I get jealous and wonder how we got stuck with Larry.
EDIT: And yes, I think Patrick, Riggo and Theismann would be a great team. I love Sonny and Sam, but they can't do it forever unfortunately.

Hmmm, while it's not the same as crowd noise on television(several broadcast mikes down on the field and in the stands, in addition to the booth), you should be able to pick up crowd reaction/noise on radio broadcasts(usually just broadcast mikes in the booth and on sideline reporters). As for the hittin' and cussin' on the field, again, you can pick up some on radio, not all.
I don't know. It's just that I'd rather watch the action and have it called by Sonny and Sam. For me, it's kind of like the equivalent to the Saturday Night Live skit where you're sitting around the table at the bar in Chicago with all Da Bears and Ditka fans...only it's Sonny and Sam.

Well, when the inevitable happens and they have to replace Sonny and Sam, let Larry go with them.
Mike Patrick, Joe T., and Riggo would be the perfect lineup. Patrick is very solid as a play by play guy. I'm almost certain he's done some Redskins preseason TV in the past, right? And Riggo would be the perfect foil for Theisman. He would be able to pop Joe's bubble when he gets a little too full of himself, providing a few well-timed :wtf: :wtf: 's when Joe lapses into his football-babble.

I argree completely about the delay issue. And while the Replayradio thingamajig that someone linked to looks promising, I have an idea that I hope someone with some power over these things will read here and follow up on:
Red Zebra will be broadcasting the Skins on a number of radio frequencies in the DC area -- so why not have different delays on different frequencies so listeners can choose which one fits the action on their TV? Would this work? Just a thought. I think the vast majority of people who want to listen to the radio broadcast want to do so precisely so they can turn their TV sound down.

You mean about the broadcasts being on different signals? I think that's the natural upshot of the acquisition of AM 980, which will become the primary signal, and keeping Red Zebra broadcasts on the 3 original XXX stations. Not sure, but I thought the team had also been planning on keeping the broadcast on 100.3 FM this year again. I'm guessing the 2 best signals are 100.3 FM and 980 AM. Perhaps they could delay one of those to sync with DirecTV and another to more closely sync with the typical cable delay. Would make life easier for those who turn the TV sound down so we can hear Sam and Sonny.

I'd be fine with Mike Patrick and Joe in the booth. BTW , has anyone been noticing that the 94.3 FM signal has been getting stronger lately? A few weeks ago I was actually able to pick up the signal at night during the NBA draft , usually when nightfall comes they weaken that signal down.

Yes, that is what i was asking. Wow, sounds like someone up above is looking out for us if it happens that way. Thanks for the heads up.:)

Well, please understand that I have no idea whether they'll sync the radio broadcasts with what we typically watch on TV, but I hope the powers that be will take notice of the need to do this and make it happen. :logo:

I think they have to stay with 100.3 because it's still the only station with broad coverage in the region. 980 craps out on me after dark and I've yet to figure out where the hell the other stations are.

Red Zebra will be broadcasting the Skins on a number of radio frequencies in the DC area -- so why not have different delays on different frequencies so listeners can choose which one fits the action on their TV? Would this work?
I don't think this is logistically possible.
Just use something like Delay Play Radio (http://delayplayradio.com/). Bam. Problem solved.

I agree completely about the delay issue.
Is this a news quote you are siting here hondo? If so, where from?
I ask because it sounds like someone with some influence is questioning it too. Not just us ES'ers.
Thanks, Hail

Replace Riggins with Doc Walker and we'd have a great booth.
Yeah that would be nice. But if they leave him as the sideline reporter and Have Patrick, Riggins, and Theisman in th booth that will be almost perfect. How many radio teams say they have a Hog, (Walker said he was a member of the Hogs on that DC Lottery commercial), and two members of the Hall of Fame on their radio team?

Please get Larry Michael out of there. It would make sense that the team is thinking of going in a new direction. Sam and Sonny are getting up in age and I think that they should retire and enjoy themselves.

Doc has like 65 different jobs.
No joke!! this guy is everywhere, all the time. Sometimes I wonder if he cloned himself and there are actually like 10 Doc Walkers walking around. When does he find time to sleep? to eat?
I'm a big fan of his though and I 'm happy to hear that he will be the new sideline reporter. I think he's great!

I entirely agree about Larry... he seems like a perfectly nice guy but there something wrong when all too often you can tell from the stadium fan's reaction what has happened way before Larry says anything.

This might be bashed, but I wouldn't mind the team of Patrick, Joe T., and Riggo one bit. We could start a new tradition...I really like Patrick a lot and thought he should have never been let go from ESPN.
From a "broadcasting" standpoint, it's a much stronger team. Two of them (as everyone knows) were on ESPN for years.
I think it would be a great mix of objectivity with just enough Redskin fandom sprinkled in (since all of them love the Skins).
I love Sonny and Sam (Larry is fine I guess), but they've been doing it for years and maybe it's time for us to start fresh? They will always be the voice of our Golden Age (Gibbs I) to me and that's enough.
Make the change and the fans will get used to it.

Larry sounds and looks too much like Kenny Albert for me to like him. I'm sure he is a great guy, but his voice, tone, tempo, etc. are not fitting for a Redskins play by play broadcast. A studio host maybe, but please find someone else to broadcast games.

All good things must come to an end. What's left of the current team that broadcasted during the golden years is getting up there, and are probably tired of watching the Skins stink things up every week for the last 15 years
Joey T used to get on my nerves, prefacing everything with "Well you know, when I played in the Super Bowl................" but he's toned himself down over the past few years
Patrick, Thiesman and Riggo, with Doc on the field would be great
Whatever they do, get Larry Michael the hell out of the booth

Wow. I really wouldn't want to see Sonny and Huff go, but if they're going to bring in Mike Patrick and Joey T, I can go for that. I always like them on the Sunday night espn games.

I agree with most of you here, Patrick, Joe T and Riggo w/ Doc on the sidelines would be a great lineup.
Patrick and Joe already have chemistry and history, and Joe T. and Riggo SHOULD have that same deal from their years of playing together (chemistry doesn't mean they need to love each other).
Doc would give a lot of refreshing insight from the sidelines.
I always thought Riggo was lining himself up to get that radio spot for quite some time, glad to see it happen (or hope to see if happens). Hey, decent trade-off, lose your radio show, gain a spot on the broadcast team.

I would LOVE Patrick/Theismann/Riggins. :notworthy
I love those guys. That would be the best broadcast team in the NFL imo.Absolutely, whole-heartedly agree. I loved the ESPN Sunday night nfl broadcast when they had Patrick and Theismann. And Riggins I enjoy listening to just because he's entertaining. Really hope this happens.
