View Full Version : What players/positions are you really looking at during preseason?

And why? This years for me personally has several players' positions that I'm very interested in. For once, we had alot of draft picks (lets face it, it's been.... years) and we also got a couple UDFA's that look VERY interesting. So for me I'm looking closely at alot of guys that I think might be starters in 2-3 years.

Offensive Line:

Andrew Crummey (OG/C) - Crummey is his name, but crummy he isnt. Voted 2nd team All American after missing 1/2 the season w/ a broken leg. Now, that's pretty good for missing 1/2 the season. He's kinda light (around 298 I think) but might be the "moble" kind of guard (or center) that WCO likes to have. I hope we get to see him play center due to the 2 other guys I'm really interested in, just so we can have LOTS of young talent in a area that we simply havent had it in years. Not a super physical guy, but very sound technique wise. I would love for him to become our starting center in a couple years. Not that I dont like Rabach, I would just like to see us get a guy that is young and be an upgrade cheap!

Kerry Brown (OT/OG) - Pretty much blew alot of guys away at the Senor Bowl. Played at a small school (Appalachia St) but they've been a powerhouse there, and beat Michigan. Played Tackle, but looks to be moved to guard in the NFL. Played guard @ the Senior Bowl and wowed people. Has quick feet (actually, very quick feet) and is physical at the point of attack. He's relentless and gets to the 2nd level and when he gets there, he flattens people. Some scouts were picking him for go to numerous Pro Bowls. Alot of guys here are pretty high on the guy, and so am I. I hope he's starting @ guard in a couple of years.

Chad Rienhart (OT/OG) - Graded out as the best lineman that 1-AA has had in the last 15 YEARS. He's big, althetic and is extremely physical. Everything I see about this guys says "MEAN". Not as quick as Brown, but has good feet and was great at LT in college. He regulary gets to the 2nd level and once he is there, he kills people. Has a fantastic "punch" and is the type of guy that you want to run behind on short yardage because he know he is going to maul the guy in front of him. Honestly, I could see him starting at RT this year, but I think they most likely have him @ guard, and might be our starter at LG by the end of the season. He's as big as Dock was, quicker, stronger, more physical and has the killer instinct that quick frankly, no one on our line has. I think this guy can be an elite player.

Defensive Line:

Kedric Golston (DT) - I'd like to see him moved from the 2 gap back to the 1 gap and loose some wieight. That is where he excelled at in college and showed some flashes as a rookie. Griff is getting up there in age, has been injury prone his entire career and hasnt been very effective at getting into the backfield for a couple years now, I'd love to see Golsten step up like Monty has. If Golsten could step up and be the kind of player he was in college at his college postion, we'd be very solid in the middle I think he's better when penitrating and giving our pass rusher more to work with. That would make our already very good secondary look elite.

Alex Buzbee (DE) - I think this is our thinnest postion. Alot will not agree with me, as many people think that Daneils is still starting material. I dont agree, even is run-stopping production is at an all-time low. And he's 35. Evans is well, a proven back-up that is decent, but that is about all. After that, we dont really have much. At LB, HB I think can (and will) be a starter. At CB, Smoot has been a a starter and been pretty productive. We have crap at DE for depth. I'm not counting James here, as he shouldnt be doing much in pre-season. So, is Buzbee going to step up and be someone that can at the very least, be a good backup? Some people think he can be, I have seen nothing that makes me think he can, but he also really hasnt gotten much of a chance. But we seriously need depth at that postion because as of right now, we have zero quality depth there and serious question marks at 1 starter. Can Alex be a every down DE? Can he push Daniels this year? Or will he end just being like most guys that come from a division 2 school that doesnt even have a football program anymore and just fade away?

So, what players/positions are you guys really looking at?

I'm mostly looking at how well Campbell and the rest of the quarterbacks are picking up the offense.

I think everyone is going to be looking at Kelly and Thomas.

The rookies as a whole...I'm really excited to see what we got and if there is any hint of something special

I also want to see how the defense looks...no ST, no CR, no RM, old ass d-line...hopefully they can hold out for one more season til we can sign some free agent help and draft some more young help

Campbell: How he'd picked up the WCO and to see if his passing mechanics have changed.

Davis: Want to see if he can transition from a college WCO system to Zorn's this year enough that the coaching staff will regularly run 2 TE sets.

Kelly: Interested to see if he can impress enough to step into the Split End receiver role from day one.

DE - Erasmus James - If he can get any work in like the coaches want, then it will be interesting to see what he can do, especially if he gets back to his playing weight in college at 260.

CB - It will be interesting to see the progress of Carlos Rogers if he can practice to see how the knee is.

TE - I know it's not the biggest thing in the world, but I'm just curious to see how Zorn uses Davis and Cooley while using all the weapons on the field. It will be interesting to see how he utilizes everyone's individual talents.

I picked the wrong day to go to training camp. The players and position i want to watch will be front and center tomorrow due to Smoot's (probably mild) ankle injury. DBs Leigh Torrence, J.T Tryon and (UDFA) Matterral Richardson will all get more playing time. Leigh Torrence saw action last year (including 1 start) and w/ Rogers on the mend he's pencilled in as the nickelback and now w/Smoot's injury he's the defacto #2 corner. The departure of Macklin and Eubanks means that J.T Tryon could see as much action as Torrence saw last year and J.T could even move ahead of Torrence on the depth chart depending on how things shake out. IMHO Richardson (UDFA) looked good, but i remember reading that he's specialized in a press man coverage and that weakness was long speed but if we play some Cover-2 he'll fit right in. IMO These guys have to be decent or else we may need to look for a FA DB.

Im really excited to see our new punter in action.

Hopfully he doesnt see lot of action, but I have a feeling he is a "secret weapon" for the "just in case"

Plain and simple, Jason Campbell! These 2 new recievers are nice to have, but even without them this team is good enough to play with any team in the NFL, ONLY if Jason Campbell steps it up and proves he can be the franchise QB we are hoping him to be.

I'll be paying attention more so to our depth more than anything.

WRs

Thomas and Kelly replacing McCardell and Lloyd. Their learning the pro speed and a new playbook. I'm going to be real interested in how fast they pick things up and whether or not we can depend on them if a sudden injury should occur.

LBs

How is Rocky doing? Can H.B. Blades be a starter in the middle if called upon? :helmet:

I feel like this is something we'll actually be able to gauge in preseason.

A lot of things being mentioned in this thread are things I don't think we'll see much of. How exactly Zorn will use all of his new toys, for example, is something that might be kept close to the vest.

I'm interested in seeing the in-game speed of our new wideouts and TE, how they take their first NFL contact, etc. I want to see how well Stuuuuuuuuu and Tryon (and the whole secondary really) can cover, and how well they're reading plays.

Oh, and I too want to know whether we'll lead the league in punting average this year. ;)

I am excited to see if JC is more relaxed at QB. Want to see how well he is taking to Zorn.

Apparently we also lost Buzbee yesterday, which I hadn't realized.

Yep, we did. Take him off the "guys I'm looking at" list. I'm hoping Mapu sticks to the roster this time, since we need a DT that can really shoot gaps and be disruptive. Griff is not the guy he used to be, and Golsten is playing out of position IMO.

Boy, was my "thin at DE" comment serious foreshadowing or what?

Thrash verse Mix and cast:
this is what they had to say out of camp today!

1. Malcolm Kelly – great hands and pretty darn fast
2. Fred Davis – sick runner after the catch
3. Devon Thomas – I place him third because he is scary fast
4. Maurice Mann – I give him the edge over the rest because he was in Seattle and knows the system. He has caught most things thrown his way
5. Burl Toler – The guy has impressed me since mini-camp. If it is catchable he seems to catch it
6. Anthony Mix – Mix has all the gifts, and played well on teams last year. He has been solid in camp, but nothing remarkable.
7. Billy McMullen – He has made some plays but has missed some as well.
8. Horace Gant – Nothing standing out

I just want to see how Campbell's rhythm looks and how the rookie receivers are doing with their route running and adjusting to NFL coverages. That's it and that's all.
