View Full Version : the forgotten DE in this trade madness who would be a perfect fit

is definitely Julius Peppers

Peppers has 1 year left on his contract and has been unable to renegotiate with the panthers, there have been heavy rumors the past 2 off seasons ofthe panthers shopping him but wanting too much in return.

he'd cost more draft pick wise, but he plans on playing for more than 1 year as well and has a better upside than Taylor.

not to forget what makes him the better fit is that Peppers is a natural LE, Taylor is not. Taylor plays the RE mostly for the dolphins but was moved around to LE at times and LB as well.

I like the idea but it would be extremely hard to pull off without selling the farm.

Even though he is not the player he once was, I'd be happier going for this one over JT. At least he's younger and has more long term upside.

Carolina, which hopes to get back to the playoffs, is not going to trade Peppers to a 2007 playoff team to allow that team to get stronger, sorry I don't see a deal here? :)

which is why it would cost alot

would you rather give up a 2nd or possibly 1st round pick for jason taylor

or a 1st and a 3rd for peppers?

No way we could afford that contract, but it would be a great addition. I'd prefer him to Taylor as well, for a number of reasons.

a little insight ... from 7/3/08. Pretty good thought by the OP nonetheless.

Panthers not expected to let down year impact DE Peppers' contract talks

July 3, 2008

Negotiations on a long-term contract extension for Panthers DE Julius Peppers are ongoing, the way we hear it. Sources in Carolina say the team is in wait-and-see mode with its freakishly athletic star pass rusher, who had a career-high 13 sacks in 2006, and talks could heat up if Peppers comes to camp in good condition and shows the ability to shake off last year’s puzzling 2½-sack campaign. Peppers, 28, is in the final year of his rookie contract. Reports from a year ago said he wanted to become the highest-paid defensive player in the league, and Carolina seemed willing to oblige. Word is, despite his baffling decline last season, the Panthers aren’t expected to make Peppers a significantly lower contract offer than the one that was discussed last offseason. They still hold him in high esteem, as head coach John Fox has made clear in statements throughout the offseason, and slashing money out of the offer would be a hit to Peppers’ psyche right before the start of the season. He is known to be sensitive about such matters, and such a tactic would become distracting.

At this point, screw it...SELL the farm! After we get him, extend his contract out with us!

Peppers would actually be easier to fit under the salary cap.

Taylor is in the final year of his contract and intends on playing just 1 season, thus he'd need a paycut to fit under our cap.

Peppers has 1 year left and needs an extension,Peppers from a cap point would be cheaper for the next 2 years, should taylor even play 2 years.

cap numbers are always low in the first few years of NEW contracts.

LOL!!!!!!!! That is exactly what I was thinking.

All thought the idea of the OP is great, I don't think this late in the offseason they would get rid of him. If there was a time, it was before the draft.

I'd rather get this deal done then the Taylor deal! Younger, stronger, faster better upside in the long run! Everyone is signed and ready to go and according to Clayton we have 9 mil in cap space...........Getr' Done!

I don't get this "player he once was" talk. He's only what 27, 28? And had one bad year? And now he'll never be good again? People are allowed to have down years, guys.

Though both options suck, IMO, I'd rather give up a 1 & 3 for Peppers. At least he still has years left, as opposed to JT who has YEAR left.

The Panthers are not going to trade Peppers unless he starts having horrible seasons which is unlikely. There was speculation that he was sick but he came out and said that he wasn't sick or suffering from any illness, so who knows. I swear I had read an article that he was loosing weight and didn't know why last season.

I don't think this idea is that far fetched, I mean if we are gonna give up at least one first rounder and an additional first day pick and shell out a huge contract, might as well be someone like Peppers who has more than a year or two left in the tank... Maybe they can sniff around and see what happens...

I don't know if Carolina would be willing to do so, but I guess it depends if they think they are rebuilding or not...:2cents:

It's obvious from their draft that they are going all out to win now. They traded a lot to get the Eagles first round pick so they could pick up a running back and o-lineman to block for him. John Fox loves smash mouth football with a good defense, so I don't see them getting rid of Peppers.

I think that we should talk to the boys in baltimore and see if we can't get a deal to trade for Suggs. I think he is threatening to hold out without a long term deal, and he's young with a ton of upside.

we would need to throw in a player to even get a peppers trade to be worth carolina discussing. Question is who do you give up? Landry? Cooley?

Unfortunately, seeling the farm is gonna be necessary. We have one real DE on our roster now. Just a horrible situation for us right now.
