Cards ticket plan aims to keep Cowboys fans out

The Cardinals are trying to "protect the nest."

This means they'd like University of Phoenix Stadium to continue to sell out, and to do so with as few opposing fans as possible.

In the past two seasons, there was little concern about this since the team sold out every home game.

But with ticket sales a bit slower as the third season approaches, the Cardinals are requiring fans who want to buy tickets to the Dallas game on Oct. 12 to also buy tickets for the Aug. 7 exhibition opener vs. New Orleans.

Cardinals fans have "created a decisive home-field advantage" the past two years, and the team wants to keep it that way by discouraging single-game ticket sales to Cowboys fans, team spokesman Mark Dalton said.

"Our goal is to have as many Cardinal fans in the stadium as possible," Dalton said.

In terms of overall ticket sales, "We're a little slower than we were at this point" last year, Dalton said, citing the slowing economy.

Dalton estimated about 58,000 season tickets have been sold.

Ideally, the Cardinals would like to sell about 60,000 season tickets and hold back 3,000 or so to sell for individual games.

"If we don't get to that threshold, then there will be a few more individual single-game tickets available," Dalton said.

If they're having a hard time getting people to buy one ticket, why would it help to make them buy two?

The hope is in making it mandatory to buy tickets to an exhibition game might limit the number of Boys fans buying tickets to the regular season matchup. Thereby, limiting the number of Boys fans filling their stadium and minimizing their home field advantage.

I understand that, but this plan makes it look like the team would rather keep opposing fans from getting tickets than sell out a game. Not selling out a game has far greater consequences than having a few hundred cowboys fans in the stadium.

Or they could try winning, in which case their fans would want to go to their games, and all of their problems would be solved.

Why are they so fearful of Dallas fans, there is 1,000 miles between Dallas and Phoenix.

Dallas fans have been known to travel west along the 8 to Phoenix for games, this is no secret.

Hell I remember when we played them in Arizona in 2005 and more than half the stadium was Redskins fans.

I don't think the Cards really care who sits in the seats whether it be Dallas or AZ fans.

What they want to do is push the single game sales of preseason tix, which won't sell out unless there's an incintive for people to buy them.

Sounds like a good marketing ploy disguised to help maintain home field advantage.

Regardless of the ticket sale policy, that place will be half Cowboys fans, the way it always was when the Cards were in the NFCE.

I'm pretty sure more Cowboys fans go to a game in Arizona than any other road game. At least it sure seems that way. I would say Miami is close to the top as well.

There is no way to keep the fans out. If they can go to stubhub and eBay, then what can the front office do. I say oh well, start winning.

When Pittsburgh played there in '06 it was half black-n-gold.

Has nothing to do w/Steelers fans traveling, they simply have a huge fanbase w/people in every NFL market who'll buy tix to see them when they come to their hometowns.

It's the same w/Dallas no matter where they go.

I like the idea of making puke fans pay more money...casual fan, of whom most puke fans are, will probably shy away from this deal.
