The hits keep coming. Just got a call from David Elfin out at Redskins Park, and there are few details yet about this one, but Fred Smoot left the field with a left ankle injury and is in the medical tent as we blog.
More details of course as we learn them.

Smoot Hurt in Afternoon Practice
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider/
Jason La Canfora calls this in from the field:
Starting corner Fred Smoot was receiving medical attention after being hurt in an 11-on-11 drill in the 3 p.m. practice. He was hurt on the far side of the field and the nature of his injury wasn't readily apparent. He was quickly surrounded by teammates and medical personnel; he was walking gingerly while being supervised by the medical staff. The injury appeared to be to his left ankle or foot and his left shoe was off.

I don't get it. I mean, bad luck is bad luck... but are we doing ALL we can here to prevent injuries?
It's probably just fluke stuff, but for day one I'd imagine we'd ease into things and work on getting bodies ready for the push... not freaking loading up the injury tent.
Nothing derails a season as fast as injuries. With a few more years of replenishing through the draft we'll be better prepared to deal with a rash of injuries.

Cerrato on J. Taylor; Injury Updates
Jason La Canfora calls in trade and injury updates from the field:
Vinny Cerrato was asked about defensive end trade talk -- concerning the Miami Dolphins' Jason Taylor or other -- and said:
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider/
"We haven't talked to anyone yet on anything."
Now, as for the injuries that predicated this talk, Phillip Daniels, who was hurt in the morning practice, will undergo surgery to repair his torn left anterior cruciate ligament Friday.
Alex Buzbee, who was hurt 30 minutes into the afternoon practice, has a ruptured right Achilles' tendon and will miss the season, obviously. He will have surgery Monday.
Starting corner Fred Smoot sprained his left ankle in the afternoon practice, during an 11-on-11 drill. Coach Jim Zorn said he's hoping Smoot will be out less than a week.
Hopefully Smoot'll be ok. Doesn't sound like it's a big deal.

Yea like it's Snyder's fault.
Daniels is getting old and injuries happen a little easier. the Buzzbee injury sucks as a young player but he still can come back. Just don't expect him this year.
Wilson needs to show that he belongs, James needs to prove his knee is sound and Evans needs to step it up. Everyone wanted to see the youngsters step up anyways, now they are forced to.
Smoot, from what I understand has a sprained ankle. The severity could be an issue, but he has time to get healthy before the season.

I think it may have something more to do than just contacting a player first before the team.
It may be publically pursuing a player, or getting in the middle of a player and team that are in a dispute.

I highly doubt Buzbee's injury effects the asking price. It's not as if Buzbee actually made the active roster last season or anything. I can't see Parcells saying "They just lost Buzbee. Now they're REALLY up **** creek!" lol...The Skins will replace Buzbee with someone else of his talent level within a day or two. And I guess when they do, the asking price will go back down ..."Well, ****...they just signed Buford Higgins. We can't ask for that #1 pick anymore."
Buford Higgins would be awesome with the 'Skins! He's a stud in the making. Wait, I thought you were talking about Buford Wiggins. Who is this Buford Higgins guy? Is he better in the 4-3 or 3-4? :D

Vinny Cerrato says that the team is bringing back Jonathan “J.T.” Mapu, who they released a few days ago, as well as bringing in an unnamed veteran. He obviously couldn’t address the Jason Taylor rumors, so that’s what they remain
Where did you hear this? If you don't mind me asking.

Oh heck, I don't understand them either.
I think it may have something more to do than just contacting a player first before the team.
It may be publically pursuing a player, or getting in the middle of a player and team that are in a dispute.
Officially, the Redskins are denying they are after Taylor. We will just have to wait and see if it is true or not.
 My kingdom for a soul who understands the tampering rule!!
By the way, are you and I allowed to talk about acquiring Jason Taylor without violating the tampering rule? :paranoid:

cool. I was rooting for Mapu to make the team, but isn't he a DT?

At least its just a sprain. But seriously, an injury plagued first day. Two guys out for the season and the number two corner out for a week.

Can you just imagine the convo between Snyder and Vinny
Snyder: Vinny get in here...We've lost 2 players on the defensive line for the season...got any ideas on how to get some talent back
Vinny: We could sign back some UDFAs
Snyder: Well, what about Jason Taylor?
Vinny: I don't know sir, we could get charged with tampering
Snyder: Why would we get charged for heating metals?
Vinny: No sir, TAMPERing
Snyder: What the hell is that?
Vinny: Erra Uh...I have no clue...but it sounds big and scary
Snyder: Well, just keep signing back UDFAs til we find someone who knows what tampering is

I don't get it at all either...and I have a sneaky suspicion most people including many in NFL FO's know what constitutes tampering

Hopefully many nervous fans can now take a step back from the ledge.
Yes it's been a rough 1st day but let me give you a headline that should keep it all in perspective...it will never come to pass but if it does then we can all have a nice panic fest together!

Fellow Skins fans look at it like this. . . Its bad but it could be a good sign. They get nicked up now (minus Daniels) and the injury bug will be dead and gone for the season. Look at it like a good sign of things to come. It will be O.K. Calm down.

and Zorn is a proponent of the Walsh/Holmgren WCO school that stresses less contact early in camp, perfering walk throughs and detailed play calling and repetitions?????? :(
There really wasn't that much contact today...
