View Full Version : John Clayton answers Jason Taylor questions

On ESPN news john clayton just reported these things...
1)Taylor told Cerrato that he will definitely play out his final 2 years on his contract and that he said he could easily be willing to extend his contract.
2) While some on this board are bashing us for giving up picks, Clayton said that the redskins had prepared themselves with an umbrella for a rainy day, and that rainy day happened today when the two players got injured. We didnt sign many this offseason so we had cap space, and our ten draft picks in the past draft gave us youth. and he continued to say we still have 6 of 7 picks next year so it isnt like we are giving up all our picks.
3)Clayton said he thinks that the redskins will be a contender in the NFC east if the offense works out (which it will)
sorry if this shouldnt have been a new thread, but i figured this is information that most people would be excited to know. so if i shouldnt have started a thread, sorry, but honestly, dont get butt hurt over it as its only one thread and it does have good info in it

This is a great move and the media recognizes it. The media hates Snyder, but some moves just can't be hated on.

Still don't like giving up a 2, but if he's willing to play two more years (perhaps even a few more if he continues to play well) then it's a little more understandable.

I would take a probowl proven player over 2 draft picks any day of the year. Especialy when their needed like they are now. Some of the best players to ever play for this team was never drafted, they were traded off for draft picks or FA.

If we can get 3 solid years out of him, i'm happy....wish we did it when Daniels was healthy cause that run stuffer/pass rushing rotation would have been key...now we can have Marcus roaming the middle and covering TE's on 3rd downs. Big Ups

So, unless we get compensatory picks for Brunell and Caldwell, we're down to 4 picks in 2009 (1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th) right?

Which probably will turn into 2-2nd round, 3rd, 5th, 2-6ths and 2+ comp picks.

Excellent point! You are the first person to make this very important point. Washington can now stay in as a LB on passing downs which means Blache can use him in coverage or blitz behind Taylor. That could be a devastating blitz combination. Taylor will be occupying two guys most of the time to free Washington up on the blitz.
People are also forgetting that Taylor excels at creating turnovers with fumbles and interceptions....not to mention he often leads the league and pass blocks.
Taylor has committed to at least the next two years...and maybe more. This was a good deal considering the circumstances.

For what we gave up, this by far has to be the best value trade we've done since 2004. Though in the past, giving up Bailey AND a 2nd rounder for Portis was foolish.
Lloyd and Duckett, no comment...
Third for Brunell...
Though he's shown he's a good player, giving up what we did for Rocky, also random.
Actually, trading a 2005 2nd rounder for a 2004 3rd rounder for Cooley was probably the best trade we've done, unless Taylor just has those monster seasons he's been known for. Here's to Taylor working out strong with us for 2-3 seasons

Bthat, good call - I agree that this should be it's own thread. BMike, lol! I too think Clayton's very informed about what goes on in the day to day affairs NFL wise. I also like when he and Sean Salisbury get into each other on their segments. SS flames him, but I get the feeling that there's some kind of grudging respect there nonetheless.

We Have To Get That # 2 Draft Pick Some How...

July-20th-2008, 08:42 PM
This is very good to hear. Taylor playing at least two years will buy the Redskins another year in the draft to pass on a DE and fill a more glaring need (with Taylor and Carter starting at DE) at linebacker and DB. They then can address DE and DT the following year when Taylor will likely bow out.

IF, we get even 4 years out of him and they're quality, i figgure it was good. Seems like a lot of rookies sign for about 4-5 then have to learn the pro game. Under the circumstances I think it was at the least, neccassary.
It did surprise me that Parcells pulled the trigger on the trade.

July-20th-2008, 08:43 PM
Normally I wouldn't be thrilled about the trade, giving up a second for such an old player no longer fully committed to football, but we really had no choice. That was a devastating injury to an already thin position, and we got one of the premiere ends in the league.
Can't really complain, they had us by the short hairs.

July-20th-2008, 08:53 PM
Kudos to the FO for getting this done the same exact day Daniels went down. While I would have preferred it be a 3rd rounder, our backs were sort of up against a wall. I mean, we all hope Erasmus James can become good again, but would any of us have felt comfortable with James as the starter from the get go? Other moves in the past like this have hurt us, but this time we have traded for a quality guy who still produces. I do expect a small drop off in run stopping, but a big increase in pass rush. Looking over our roster, I think we could afford to trade that 2nd rounder. Given the position we were in, I like this move. We weren't going to be able to fleece Miami, but both teams got real good value in this trade.
This information from Clayton makes the deal even better. Vinny made Taylor assure him that he was in it for at least 2 more years. Taylor is at the scary mark of 32, but he is one of those athletes that is in great shape and continually produces, so I would imagine that varring any sudden injury, Taylor will be able to produce at a solid or better level for the next 2 seasons, maybe longer. That's plenty of time for guys like James and Wilson to develop.
If you still aren't sure about this move, look at it this way: We now have 2 double-digit sack DEs on the line. Our DL consists of Andre Carter, Jason Taylor, Erasmus James, Demetric Evans, Chris Wilson, Cornelius Griffin, Anthony Montgomery, Kedric Gholston, and Lorenzo Alexander.

Absolutely Concur. I don't like giving our picks up but because of freakish happenings today (two DE's going down) it put us in a bad situation.

Next year we have 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th and 7th round picks.
Vinny could pull some of the same types of trades like he did in April's draft. The 1st could yield a couple of 2nd rounders and another trade could bring an additional third or a fourth rounder. Draft an elite CB and devote the early rounds to OL.

Wow, that is some wishful thinking. The only reason we got the 2 second rounders from ATL is becaue they really coveted Baker to protect Ryan. Doubtful that happens two years in a row.

My only big concern with this move is either Taylor or Andre Carter are going to have to change positions. Defensive linemen work a lot on their hand placement and footwork and it's not always easy to switch sides. I'm also concerned about Taylor in the run game but hopefully Greg Blache can figure out the best way to use him.

I like the trade. And I know, they said taylor didn't care about the money, but you got to think, that Snyder could give him a signing bonus and stretch it out for a few years. Problem is with that uncapped year looming. hrms.

Before the draft we probably would have had to part with a first and a decent player so a 2nd and 6th is not that bad...It shows Vinny knows how to get things done and do them well and if Taylor gets injured during TC, the Fins are responsible for 7M of his contract....or at least ESPN said so a little while ago....Vinny is really good....Thank you, Vinny. Well, first of all, Daniels may still be able to be back for two of those years that Taylor may or may not be here for. Second, Marcus better get back to '05 form if he wants to be known for covering TE's and the middle of the field on passing downs...hasn't exactly been his strength his entire career much less the past two seasons :2cents:

Actually I think ours are better and one of ours didn't just retire either.
Lets compare DE's best seasons real quick.
Peppers-----2004 65Tackles 9Passes Def 11.0Sacks 4FF 2INT 1TD
Freeney-----2004 36Tackles 3Passes Def 16.0Sacks 4FF 0INT 0TD
Umenyiora---2005 71Tackles 3Passes Def 14.0Sacks 4FF 0INT 0TD
J. Allen------2007 65Tackles 10PassesDef 15.5Sacks 4FF 0INT 0TD
Kerney------2007 62Tackles 2Passes Def 14.5Sacks 5FF 1INT 0TD
Kampman---2006 89Tackles 0Passes Def 15.5Sacks 3FF 0INT 0TD
Taylor------2006 73Tackles 11Passes Def 13.5Sacks 10FF 2INT 2TD
The big thing though is that Taylor puts up great stats every year. He averages 12-13 sacks and 65 tackles every year this decade and hasn't missed a game since before Norv Turner finally got this team to the playoffs. All those other guys have had bad seasons or injuries in the past few years.

exactly right, Kendall deal put us without 4th this next draft, having said that it was and is WELL worth it, he's proven to be a GREAT pick up for us, and should be solid for next year +. Great pickup, along with the signing of JT. You have to have proven Lineman for teams to respect your Lines, and cause them to account for those proven players.
