Researchers have found what they Gorillasare labeling the 'mother lode' of western lowland gorillas in the Republic of Congo. The gorillas have been found in an isolated forest known by researchers and scientists alike as the "Green Abyss" because the forest is nearly impossible to navigate on foot because of all the swamps. No roads exist in this forest, and it has been void of humans because of its harsh traveling conditions. The forest has not been logged, and these gorillas have not been exposed to human disease, which is why the population has been allowed to grow to a whopping 120,000 gorillas!
Western Lowland Gorillas are critically endangered animals with worldwide numbers ranging from around 50,000 to 70,000 total. This new discovery more than doubles the worldwide number of western lowland gorillas. In 2007 Western Lowland Gorillas were labeled as Critically Endangered because their numbers were projected to decline more than 80 percent over three generations due to the Ebola virus, poachers and leopards
Efforts by conservationists and environmentalists are already being rallied to make the forest a protected park so that this habitat remains intact and the gorilla numbers are not threatened in the future.

Cool, yet I'm somewhat worried that poachers are just going to tear that place up. Hopefully it stays isolated for the reasons it was before. Hopefully.

They shouldn't have said where it was. Now people know where to go destroy them like they did the other populations.

I had the same thought when I read the article. Hopefully they can be protected, but I'm not optimistic.

Well, I hope they treat would-be poachers just like any other suspected poacher in Africa: shot on sight.

Actually, many African countries are now starting to really clamp down on poaching. There is a law in many African countries to just shoot poachers on sight. I wasn't kidding about that in my earlier post. My cousin saw some dude shot right in front of him in Mozambique b/c they THOUGHT the African was poaching. Threw the guy's body in the hull of the boat and were like "Okay, everybody board the ferry now!"
And when we were in Zambia, a family friend was almost shot on sight (pretty much b/c he was a frickin moron and trespassed into a national game park while 'taking a walk' - don't ask  ). They pulled up in two jeeps with their machine guns pointed at him yelling a "poacher" and ended up taking him to jail. The Zambian at the place we were staying said that the only reason they didn't shoot him right there is because they saw he was white and quickly realized he was American. Not only did we have to bail his butt out of jail, but we had to spend the rest of our trip watching him like a little kid to make sure he didn't do anything else stupid or against COMMON SENSE.
Point is, lot of countries are bearing down on these poachers. Hopefully they'll do the same here.

Now that's an amazing find,(Congo moment. Book, not movie). Let's hope these do not suffer the same fate as many others have suffered.

You know, that book was actually quite good, particularly for the time it was written (regarding its use of tech). Amazing that it was turned into such a god awful movie.
Don't worry though PCS. I'm sure any poachers will be met with a couple of stone paddles to the skull. :)

What does the thread title say "If true"?
No one is disputing the validity of this discovery.

I'm always skeptical of these stories. Often you find out people actually knew about this population of gorillas, or the estimates of group size were significantly exaggerated, etc.

Well not now that it's plastered across CNN, MSNBC and every other news outlet around the globe. Those poor gorillas are doomed.
