Giants' RB Jacobs tees off on Cowboys
August 14, 2008 9:00 AM
ALBANY, N.Y. -- It appears that the war of words between the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys will spill over into the 2008 season. When last seen at Texas Stadium, Giants players were enjoying some postgame popcorn in honor (mockery) of Terrell "Getcha Popcorn Ready!" Owens.
Earlier in the season, Cowboys wide receiver Patrick Crayton had taunted the Giants in print, which led to an entertaining verbal matchup between he and running back Brandon Jacobs.
Since arriving at Giants training camp, I've been told that several members of the organization plan their Wednesday evenings around watching HBO's "Hard Knocks" in an effort to find more bulletin board material.
Apparently Jacobs has already seen enough because he went off on the Cowboys while appearing on WFAN's mid-day show earlier this week. After calling the Cowboys an "arrogant group," Jacobs followed with this:
"I guess they won their Super Bowl rings in training camp, because they didn't win it last year," he said.
I'm not sure whether the Giants have heard about Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips referring to them as "last year's champs" during training camp in Oxnard, Calif., but I'm certain it's something they can work with. As GM Jerry Reese told the NFC East Blog on Wednesday, the Giants "play the role of the underdog as well as anyone."
Can the defending world champs play this role with a straight face?

I'm with the Giants on this one...the Cowgirl are arrogant as **** and have absolutely no reason to be so

As much as I dislike Jacobs, he's absolutely right. The Cowboys are completely overconfident and arrogant, and this from a team that hasn't won a playoff game in over a decade and whose coach is Wade Phillips

Their starting quarterback has never won a playoff game in his career. Their head coach has never won a playoff game in his career. Not sure where all this confidence is coming from but it is obviously misplaced.

Last year's champs remain THE world champs until someone takes it from them.
Geez, siding with the G-men in a pissing match. Reminds me of the Iran-Iraq war.

The Cowboys seem to think they have everything already locked up this year. They are annoying me more than the Eagles usually do. I usually root for the Redskins when they play the Cowboys. I may have to root for the Eagles when they play the Cowboys too. How great would it be for the Cowboys to be 0-6 in the division? Unlikely I know, but great.
Man, saying I may have to root for the Eagles against anyone makes me sick to my stomach.

Way to go wade. As long as you just declare your team last years champs, you dont have to win another game(like you could win a meaningful one if you tried...)! Im sure you wont get canned next year.

I find so many things wrong here:
1. I agree that the Cowboys are unbelievably arrogant . . . They have always been that way. It's that elitist attitude that started our hatred towards them. So here, I agree with Jacobs 100%.
2. Wade is an idiot.
3. The Giants have a serious problem with needing motivation to play. This was evident last year. And to schedule your wednesdays around a show dedicated to the boys is a bit much. Searching for bulletin board material is kind of pathetic actually. This may work for them though, as they used the underdog role perfectly to their advantage and won the whole thing. And I have no problem congratulating them for that accomplishment. But Jacobs, Pierce, and company need to stop looking for stuff to get them hyped . . . It's just sad.

I actually like it when the players show the same passion (and hatreds) as we fans do, as opposed to them laughing on the sidelines during a beating.

The Patriots have been doing the same exact thing since their first Super Bowl run, it's not pathetic, it's psychological warfare.

Watching the show, I actually thought they made Wade Phillips look like a genually nice guy, and not dislike him so much...but then whenever the camera gets on Jerry Jones...he just seems so very pompous.

I agree that the Patriots LOVE the psychological aspect of football . . . No question about it. And based on their results (as well as the Giants last year), that tactic is successful. BUT, to schedule your evenings around that to look for the material is just too much for me.
When Hard Knocks first game out I think it was the Ravens . . . and I don't remember hearing about any Steelers/Browns/Bengals looking at the show on a weekly basis.
If I were Brandon Jacobs and the rest of the Giants, I would spend my time working on my own game to defend my crown. :2cents:

So you hope the Redskins arn't watching a show that parades a team in the division as SB 43 champs?

Who said I am happy and arrogant? :silly:
Clearly I am not happy with an NFC East team winning a Championship not named the Washington Redskins. Arrogant? I am not going off applauding the Skins crowning us champions of anything. The Lombardi Trophy resides in the Meadowlands right now . . . Plain and simple. If we want a shot at it, we have to beat you on September 4th.

Exactly. Like Bubba said, the more you worry about other teams, the less you have time for your own. I would much rather prefer the Skins study their playbooks, learn the offense, and work our any glitches than have them try to find motivation. Let the Boys talk all they want. It's what they do. And the media feeds it (hence the show, ESPN, and seemingly every other media outlet). I personally don't think the Giants (or anyone in our division for that matter) need to look at a show to get motivation to beat the damn cowboys. Hell, if I were the giants, I'd look at film of Osi, Strahan, and Tuck absolutely killing their offensive line for motivation . . . at least that way, I can see weaknesses and therefore further learn how to exploit them. Plus I would definitely get hyped up

I feel the exact same way. Actually Jacobs has a big mouth of his own, for a guy who hasn't done a lot in the league. However, the cowgirls, let by Jerruh, are very arrogant to which they walk around like they actually won the SB last year. Thats alot for a team that hasn't won a playoff game in 12 seasons.

I want to apologize for attacking you earlier. The truth is, I really wasn't that familiar with you. I've been reading your posts in ATN the past couple days and I now think you're one of the most knowledgeable posters here. Sorry Boys fans but I'm going to have to agree with Jacobs and the ATN gang here again. They have the right to talk smack. They won the SB and they have the right to talk a little smack. There's nothing better than a confident team but we need a little less arrogance until we actually do something in the postseason. Tony Romo failed to win a playoff game in his first full season starting and Dallas hasn't won a playoff game in our last 11 seasons.

I think the Cowboys fans are forgetting about the Flutie Curse. http://www.coldhardfootballfacts.com/Articles/11_2061_Only_a_flake_would_doubt_the_Curse_of_Flut ie.html
Or the fact that they are coached by the winningest Head Coach in NFL history to never have won a playoff game. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/coaches/
Or the fact that they were the first NFC #1 seed since the NFL went to 12 team playoffs 18 years ago to not win a single playoff game.
Or maybe they don't realize that the Cowboys haven't won a single playoff game since 1996. Only Detroit in the NFC has gone longer without a playoff win and that is only true because the Redskins beat the Lions in the 1999 playoffs.
Since the Cowboys last won a playoff game in 1996 they have gone 0-6 and have been outscored 144-81.
The Cardinals have won 1 single playoff game in their history and it was against the Cowboys in 1998, 2 years after the Cowboys last playoff win.
The Panthers first 2 playoff wins were against the 1996 and 2003 Cowboys. The Panthers started the current streak of Cowboys playoff losses with that win in 1996.
The arrogance of the Cowboys really doesn't make a lot of sense.
