Yes, I'm a VT guy. Class of '83. Lived and died with this team since showing up there as a freshman in the late 70's with long hair and a bad print shirt.
I'm writing this with 2 minutes to go in the first quarter of the 2008 opener against East Carolina. Why? Because already several things are clear:
1) QB Sean Glennon will never be anything more than he's been for the past two seasons--a decent, streaky college quarterback with a penchant for brainless, game-costing mistakes at the worst possible moments. Can be very effective when given time to throw on rhythm to his primary receiver, but a hold-your-breath, watch-between-your-fingers train-wreck the minute he has to double-clutch, make a read or look for secondary receiver.
2) Offensive Coordinator Bryan Stinespring (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=2&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.firebryanstinespring.com%2F&ei=rHi5SKm7FYmIecCA6aYD&usg=AFQjCNEZcmdLlBeNL8vOfRnVgtfIQo25eQ&sig2=Sj8NmeoICWW0vfMeBctVlQ) is Frank Beamer's blind spot. Never has one man's unimaginative, limited, outdated playcalling cost one team so many legitimate opportunities to rise to the next level. Stinespring is to big-time Division One playcalling what Sean Glennon is to big-time Division One quarterbacking: not quite ready for prime time.
Frank Beamer is the best thing to ever happen to VT football, but what is perhaps his single greatest quality--fierce loyalty to his staff--is also the cage he's built around his own program. As long as Stinespring remains, designing and running an offense one clear step below big-time D1 level, what you see with this program is what you're going to get ...

As I'm posting the thread, Sean Glennon throws brainlock pick #2. First one cost them at least 3 when they were already deep in the red zone, this one will probably cost them 7 as he was standing at his own 5 when he threw it.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Edit with 4 minutes to go.
Can't recall the last time I've seen a Bud Foster defense look this soft, particularly in the 2nd half after he's had a chance to make adjustments. There aren't many in the business better at it. I don't envy his players during practice this week.

Pretty clear this VT team is in a transition year. Too many young players, no legitimate QB (I saw Tyrod Taylor in the spring game--the guy is not ready), the same old substandard offensive braintrust ... plus paying the price for too many years of focusing their recruiting on skill position players and "athletes" rather than big people to win the battle up front. Not a good recipe.
Always a chance they could rebound from here and go on a run, but it seems equally likely they're looking at a Bluebonnet Bowl kind of season.

If you can't even complete a WR screen, you know you have offensive problems ...

They won't be as bad in the coming weeks as they were today offensively, but ultimately this is an offense without a big time triggerman or coordinator. Without the support of the defense (a concern in itself given their inability to handle the LOS today) and another ridiculous year of Beamer Ball craziness, this is just another VT team good enough to break your heart.

I agree with both points.
1. Glennon is awful.
2. Stinespring's playcalling is mediocre at best.

I'd switch those two.
Glennon did well down the stretch last year, then looked terrible in the Orange Bowl.
Stinespring is awful, his playcalling is a complete and total joke.

I think the only way VT will get rid of Stinespring is via DUI.

Yeah, how's this working out for Tech??? BWAA-HA-HA-HA-HA!!!
Sure, UVA got their cojones handed to 'em Saturday...but at least East Carolina made my day enjoyable.
As my brother said to me immediately after the game, when he called: "Eff Beamer Ball!!!". (This, while we were LOA'sO...):gaintsuck:eaglesuck:point2sky:applause: :notworthy

Stiney's problem always has been he has no feel for the flow of a football game
An example was late in the 2nd quarter on the possession that changed the game
You have a very young team that is up 14-0, feeling pretty good about themselves. Your D up to this point has played real well.
Your ball at the 25 yard line, 3 minutes to go before the half. 2 timeouts left.
Now if you have a veteran team, you take a chance. You try and work down the field.
But you don't. So on first down you call a pass play. Incomplete. Clock stops
Second down you try and force another pass. Missed block. Sack
3rd down and 17 at your own 17 yard line, a little over 2 minutes left. What should you do now? Run a draw play, hope for the best, and probably punt right?
Nope, you have Glennon in the shotgun. Your center bounces the snap to him so he doesn't realize its a 3 man rush, because he was looking for the ball
Instead of throwing it downfield, Glennon tries to throw a slant. PICKED OFF. Ball down to the 1 yard line
On 3rd and one ECU pounds it in, and there is one minute left till halftime. ECU feels pretty good, because despite being outplayed for the most part in the first half, they are only down 7
Meanwhile this group of younguns is feeling a bit nervous, because despite playing pretty well in the first half, only up 7
I could come up with example after example of his lack of feel for a football game. Running Ore down the throat of KU's D in the Orange Bowl? Rather then keep doing it till they can stop, you start throwing slow developing deep balls!
Running right through ECU on your first drive and are in the red zone? Hey how about a pass to the one guy that ECU will cover, Greg Boone. INT
Some rich donor is going to need to Jeff Bowden the guy

4 in a row? Wait, the all might Chris Long never came within single digits of beating Virginia Tech while at UVA?
