I thought I would take many of you back to that tragic day 7 years ago to see how things were here, on ES, at the time. Here are several threads that were on the board at the time of the attacks. Pay attention to the last one especially. That's the one I read that day when I got home as I watched the news. It was especially chilling reading about the events on that thread. Still gives me goosebumps. God Bless all those who lost their lives in those attacks and all their families and friends that they left behind.

The last thread shows the extent of wild rumors and incorrect reports that were flying that day - The Mall is on fire. USA Today building on fire. Explosion at the Captiol building. Car bomb at the State Department. Two more hijacked planes headed for DC. Building in Tyson's Corner hit. Camp David hit.

It was a chaotic time.

Exactly, and no one had the information. Cell Phones were not working, the internet was dieing under the stress of the traffic. I left work to go home and get a radio of all things, to try to figure out what was going on.

Thanks for posting this. This is the kind of stuff I remember - so much misinformation and really a feeling of fear. I was in Tysons Corner at the time and left work early to go to my parents house with my sister. I remember there was rush hour traffic at 11am or so. I remember the internet being incredibly slow at work, and having about 10 IM windows open at the same time. I will never forget that day.

You mention the sense of fear. Remember the first time you saw a low flying plane in the sky, a few days after that? Did you watch it all the way across the horizon as I did? Reminds me of how I felt pumping gas during the Sniper scare. Those two events made me feel more fear than I ever have in my life, and it is not something I ever wish to experience again.

I was thinking about that day earlier this morning. Good post, PCS.

I have over a hundred videos from that day, but here's the most dramatic video I know of. Max the screen and turn the volume up. I got this off Kazaa back in the day:

Terrible day especially for me on so many personal levels. It still feels like a very bad dream.

1. My father passed on Sept 11, 1999

2. My best friend was shot and killed in front of me Sept 11, 1991

3. My neighbors and very good friends was on the flight that crashed in to the pentagon

My hats go off to all the brave folks in New York and here for their help in time of need. My prayers forever goes out to the families that lost love ones to such an coward act.

It definitely was. My sister-in-law was working for ABC at the time and worked out of the State Department. There were reports that the State Department had been hit by a car bomb and we couldn't reach her adding to the hysteria of the day. Reading those threads really brings all those feelings of shock and disbelief flooding back. Easily the most memorable day of my life.

Reading those posts brought back some bad memories. I remember I was in school that day and students were saying that the world is comming to an end. I heard all sorts of crazy rumors. It blew my mind b/c I was in NYC the previous weekend at the WTC. That night, I remembered something my mom said to me before she dropped me off at school that morning. I was having trouble with my history class and she told me that "whatever happens today will be history tomorrow." Scary

Like the Soviets, you'd go in without too much trouble, but the body bags would never stop comming home and eventually the American public would tire of the whole thing and demand we leave. Net result, nothing except a lot of people killed on both sides and Oliver Stone movies to commemorate it. Gives me chills. What a horrible day.

I remember having my computer stuck on extremeskins for updates as I was terrified about what was going with my family. Mom had just moved out to Alexandria (close to Pentagon) and my brother had just started working for a firm near the Capitol. God I was freaked. Being 500 miles away really effing sucked that day.

Some of these threads that day convinced me to join this site. The way everyone rallied together to provide news and updates to each other enlightened me as to how beneficial the internet and boards like this can be in a time like 9/11.

I still hate that day.

Thank you for creating this thread. I've noticed how fewer and fewer people put flags in front of their homes, on their cars, and wear red, white, and blue on 9/11. I find it very sad that already it is becoming a distant memory for so many.

Today I am remembering all who died and were severely injured on 9-11-01, as well as their loved ones. Special remembrances go out to those victims who were dear to people on ES.

I also am remembering the wonderful sense of unity that USA felt in the weeks after the attack. As the presidential candidates are tearing each other apart, I like to think back to the sense of solidarity that existed then. There were no Democrats and Republicans feuding with each other, there just were Americans. I wish we could get back to that time when we truly were the United States of America.

I'll never forget that day..I was at work and we were listening to Stern when it happened. They were joking around, and Howard noticed the first plane, and at first they thought it was a Cessna...but when they realized what it was, he had some of the best coverage we could get. The Whack Pack was out on the streets near there reporting for him. He was on almost all day. The station asked him to continue his broadcast. Then a bunch of us gathered around a TV at work, and watched the 2nd plane and the towers falling. I think I still have Sterns broadcast from that day saved on my computer. Went to practice that night, and our coaches who were from South Africa sat us down and with tears in their eyes told us that even though they saw this stuff in S. Africa alot, it hurt even more that it happened here, and to the degree it happened. One of my teammates then spoke up and told us his brother was among the missing, and was in one of the floors above the impact. He had a feeling, knowing his brother, that he was one of the people who jumped. Yet, my teammate was there...at practice, that night and stuck through it knowing thats what his brother would have wanted. We also were informed that one of the teams we are close to had several players that were missing, or confirmed dead.

First chance I got, I bought a picture of the NY skyline...best skyline in the world so someday when I had a child he/she would know what NY is supposed to look like. I said I would be damned if when my children were learning about it would the story be "diluted" by history books.

God Bless the men and women who died, and the ones who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

reading the old posts gave me chills. We were all fired up, but like one of the posts said, if we don't accomplish our goal soon, the American people will get tired and forget why we went to war. Looks like that has happened. Not to mention, we haven't fought this "war" very well. From an admin point, not the troops themselves. God bless America, and of course our men and women fighting to protect us.

Watching that video still makes my heart pound. It was an absolutely sickening day. I had a dental appt. that morning and turned on the TV before I left, something I almost never did in the morning back then. I watched it all unfold, got my kids off to school and headed out to the dentist. I saw the first tower collapse before I left. I listened to the radio in the car on the way and heard about the second tower. They even had the radio cranked up at the Dentist office for everyone to hear.

Afterwards, I headed into work and followed it all on the internet. Needless to say, like most Americans, I didn't get much work done that day. I remember leaving work early and staying glued to the TV until about 11 PM Mountain Time. I had a hard time falling asleep that night.

Every 9/11 the news should be flooded with the headlines and videos from that day to remind people what we are fighting for. Its sad how soon people forget and start claiming we have no right to be in the Middle East right now.

I remember standing on my porch in Nags Head and seeing nothing in the sky but an occasional F-16 that would come ripping down the beach real low. That was real spooky. It felt like we were in the middle of the fight. I was really scared for the folks living in Norfolk. I just knew someone was going to try something there. I'll never forget that day.

What a tragic day, everything changed after that, by best friend is Muslim, and he is disgusted by these acts, but also he is disgusted by the absolutely absurd comments about Islam promoting violence. Middle eastern kids are now being called terrorists in there schools, its kinda sad, not only are the American people affected, but the people that supposedly did this is making people that look somewhat like them look bad aswell, its disgusting.

Its kinda stupid, a group of people from one ethnicity decide to kill over a thousand people, and now suddenly all people that have tanned skins are terrorists...

I am not implying that all people feel this way at all, I am just saying, this new stereotype can get out of hand, and the apparent "7-11" cashiers could very well end up in a internment camp, its a scary time for people of the middle eastern heritage.

Its a day the whole world will remember. not just us.

I can't believe it's been 7 years. All those innocent people we lost. It's such a sad day for us. And what makes it all even worse, is that the real mastermind behind the attacks is still walking free. His capture would have at least added a sense of closure, but instead, he's walking free and there's no real guarantee that he'll ever be caught.

I was on my way to work in Manhattan that morning. I worked on lower Fifth Avenue. By the time I got out to the street from the Railroad, the second plane had already hit. We could see the buildings from our office window, but I stopped watching when people started jumping. I didn't see the buildings fall until later on television. I will never forget that day. I do know one guy who was an electrical contractor who had a monetary dispute with the management of Windows on the World Restaurant at the top of the WTC on 9/10. He told them, "My crew won't be here tomorrow. Thank God he stuck to his guns.

It's really hard to believe it's been seven years since 9/11. A lot has changed in that time. However, for me the thing I still can't get over is seeing people jumping off the WTC to their deaths. That absolutely haunts me to this day. Also, I'll never forget working with the survivors from the Pentagon and the incredible feeling of guilt I felt as a Muslim being around them. Finally I won't ever forget that in the aftermath of 9/11, for once and perhaps the only time in my lifetime, there was a palpable feeling that everyone in this country was 100% united in our outrage, anger and sadness.

I remember thinking once when I was in a high school history class that all the interesting stuff had already happened and that I was unlucky to live in a period after all the "history" had already taken place. Imagine that.

For all the innocents that died that day, RIP. We won't ever forget.

On a roof doing fascia and soffit when word came out that a plane had hit one of the towers. We thought small plane until the other was hit. Then we listened to the radio for the rest of the day. If you really want to take a time trip back to that day, watch 102 Minutes on the History Channel. It's made up of video camera footage from different sources shown in real time. There's no narrative, only what was recorded by the cameras. It's pretty harrowing. It's on right now.

thanks for mentioning this

man yusuf06 hit it square on with this one huh?

"And Art, you mentioned Vietnam, if you want the definition of a quagmire, try to invade Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon or any of several other Islamic/middle eastern countries. Like the Soviets, you'd go in without too much trouble, but the body bags would never stop comming home and eventually the American public would tire of the whole thing and demand we leave. Net result, nothing except a lot of people killed on both sides and Oliver Stone movies to commemorate it. I say we find whomever is responsible, take them out...completely and totally...and get the heck out."

wishful thinking. Iraq has been nothing like Viet Nam....except for the traiterous activities of the loyal "opposition"

My dad was a firefighter in Prince William in 2001, he was called back in to do rescue at the pentagon that day, he was supposed to pick me up from school that afternoon, and he didn't come to pick me up, I was worried for a while until my mom came to get me.

Actually, for me anyway, the time trip is in full effect right now. I'm doing a what I was doing 7 years ago. Watching the show you mentioned, while reading ES. Specifically for a few minutes, that thread above. Whoa.

Before then my parents would always tell me how they always remembered exactly where they were when JFK was shot and i never understood how they could remember exactly what they were doing at a very moment in time

I was 13 and in 8th grade...i was on break and my teacher came in and told us a plane hit one of the WTC towers...then we were called to an assembly just a while longer and our principal told us a lot of what's in that 4th thread...now i understand whats it like to remember exactly what you were doing at a certain time

i was the 13 and in my 8th grade history class. the principal came and pulled our teacher into the hall and told him the news, and he came back in with an awful look, but wouldnt tell us what happened. kids were getting called down to the office for early dismissal and a girl came in late and told everyone what happened. it was tough to believe then and still is.

I was 14 at the time, in my freshman year of high school. I remember we had gym class, then all of a sudden the teacher made us come near the building and sit down, while she talked on her 2-way to find out what to do next. We were all pretty confused and heard some muttering about how a building had been hit, then suddenly we catch on the 2-way that the second building collapsed.

Quickly we were all ushered into a classroom, with the doors closed and the lights turned off, with the tv on as we saw the reports. I can honestly say I felt numb at that point, and in disbelief because I had never seen anything like it before, not in this day and age.

Thanks PCS!

The links are a flashback to 9/11 and waking up to seeing the replays of the 1st WTC tower going down, waking up my four boys to see what was happening in New York and then all of us seeing in real time the 2nd tower going down; a 3rd plane hitting the hitting the Pentagon, and then the fourth missing flight 93 downed.

Today, my 3rd oldest son is a Marine Reservist (activated in 2007) and deployed in El Asad, Iraq--God willing, I'll see his face again this November.

Thank you for reminding me what I felt that day. Shock, disbelief, sorrow, ANGER, and a thirst for justice and retribution against the ideology that would do such horror against the humanity of man in the NAME of their FALSE GOD!

God Bless America and Semper FI!

I've told this 100 times but will tell it again.

On September 7th 2001 my grandmother passed away, funeral arrangements
were made for September 11th at the National Memorial Park King David Memorial Gardens on Lee Highway in Fairfax VA for noon.

At the time i was living in Arlington about 2-3 miles west of the Pentagon off of Columbia Pike and Glebe RD. I woke up around 9am, and headed outside to clean my car out since family members would be riding with me to the funeral. I heard a plane that sounded very low, dont remember the exact time and noticed a jumbo sized plane that looked to be off course, i thought nothing of it since National Airport was so close. Finished cleaning the car out and headed inside to read the paper, turned on the tv, and was floored, about 5 mins later i saw the reports on the Pentagon, i couldnt believe it, i started calling family members.

Needles to say my grandmothers funeral was delayed until that evening around 6pm because traffic was nuts everywhere, hardly anyone could make phone calls. She had to wait to be put to rest and i am sure was turning over in her casket as she was being lowered into the ground. I will NEVER forget that day as well as everyone else!

My neighbor directly asross the street from me came running outside yelling that his wife worked in a office CLOSE to where the plane hit the Pentagon, so he was in a frenzy as well. Saw her come home the next day from the hospital, she had some burns but wasnt really bad thank goodness, more bad news on the family/friend front would of been even more horrible.

**** The cowards that did this to us, every day i damn those fk'rs!

Albany has an amazing 9/11 exhibit in the state museum. I think it was between them and the Smithsonian. I don't remember if the Smithsonian or the NYS museum got to pick items first for their memorials to 9/11. They have one of the fire engines, lots of pieces from the tower, partially developed photographs from a famous photographer who passed taking those pics..very chilling...you saw his last pics. Breath taking and very sad exhibit...I know I am probably forgetting some things but its been a few years since I saw it. I need to go back.
Anyways, I highly recommend seeing it if you are from around here, or in the area.

I was working that day and as most I was in "first to go last to know mode".

My team and I were stopping every suspicious vehicle outside AFB, and the Fed. Court House. Needless to say it was long nerve racking day that I will never4get.

I understand exactly where you're coming from man. I'm sorry to hear about everything that has happened with you, and there are no words that can butter that up, so I won't even try to. I'm praying for you man.

Those posts had me tearing up again.

And no I don't regret what I posted back then.

I wish a cable news channel had the courage to actually show more footage of 9-11 but it seems like they want us to forget or move on.

Some fool yesterday on ESPN 980 equated 9-11 to black history month and said he didn't need to be reminded about something that happened years ago.

My heart and prayers to those who lost loved ones back then
Agreed. 9/11 was one of the most emotionally wrenching experiences of my life so it's not surprising to me that a lot of crazy things were said. I don't remember everything I said or wrote that day and in the days that followed. I certainly wouldn't be surprised if there were things I said that were over the line. However as always, I most certainly won't back down from or regret in any way countering your ignorance, xenophobia and general stupidity.

WOW, the level of discourse on this site back then was so high. Not to detract from the tragedy of that day.

Reading that thread shows you what ES was founded up - intelligent conversation.
