Just saw this on ESPN. Not sure if it's worthy of it's own thread but thought many would find it interesting. I think it speaks volumes about G. Williams ability to make adjustments after halftime. I am fully aware of how many games the Skins lost after leading at halftime. Considering it was the same personnel in both halves, it's obvious coaching plays a huge factor in the outcome of the game. Hopefully we'll be better off this year.

Saints at Redskins, 1 p.m.

http://espn.go.com/i/teamlogos/nfl/sml/trans/was.gifhttp://espn.go.com/i/teamlogos/nfl/sml/nor.gif The Redskins had a bizarre split last year; according to DVOA, their defense was the best in the league in the first two quarters but went all the way down to 25th in the league after halftime. The Saints? Their offense was ranked eighth in both halves.
Washington might consider using the shotgun more frequently to challenge the Saints' defensive backs. New Orleans had the third-worst pass defense against the shotgun last year.

An odd stat for sure, but it doesn't surprise me. Think about how many blown leads their were. And I'm willing to bet the offensive stats aren't much different. Granted they were far from first, but they were much better in the first half of games when Gibbs' play to not lose style was here.

I still think Williams lost us that Dallas game last year.

The Redskins need to establish the run, but go multiple receiver sets often with even Cooley lined up as a wideout. Their defensive backfield is weak.

I agree. Establishing the run will take some pressure off of Campbell, but he will need to step his game up. With 3-4 WR sets, this should spred the Saints D out and open up holes for Portis. Lets just hope our D shows up for all 4 quarters. The last thing I want to see is our offense having to answer every Saints score.

As Enforcer stated it is an odd stat but not surprising at all after all of the late game collapse we had last year.

We're definitely going to have to utilize the shotgun until JC/Zorn and the O-line gain more confidence within the wco. Establishing the run is always a key to the game. I wouldn't mind seeing some hurry-up as well. JC seems to run the hurry-up pretty well and it wouldn't be a bad idea just to get into some sort of rhythm early.

Third worst D against the shotgun and Zorn is going to start using it more!

goddamn the offense has been the achilees heel for years now. the defense can only do so much before they are just running on fumes out there getting the ball pounde down their throats.

There are other factors than GW's halftime adjustments. JG's conservative play-calling meant the defense spent more time on the field during the 2nd half than perhaps the coaching staff would have liked, which in turn may have led to some late-game collapses. Those were interesting stats though -

Hello. My name is Fred Davis. I am a football player that can catch the ball. Would anybody like to throw me the ball too?

I though G. Williams was a hell of a coach. But my wife is from Jacksonville and her family are obviously Jags fans. They were pretty unhappy with his all out blitz call on 3 and long last week. According to them, he cost them that game as well.

That's impressive. The best defense in the league the 1st two quarters. We still don't know if GW called off the dogs in the 2nd half or they came out flat. Who ordered it, etc. All we know is a different team came out to play. I say treat them like the movie major league. Make their locker room crap at half time. No whirlpool, no massage, no nothing. lol

That was one positive I took from the Giants game. Our defense stepped up and played well in the 2nd half, which didn't happen as much during Williams' tenure. Barely more than 100 yds and 0 pts. Let's keep that performance throughout the game.

He did adjust. Just a little backwards. :silly:

The stats for the offense should be somewhat similar. The offense was very good in the first half as well, but in the second half, it was very poor.

If Campbell can't throw all over these donkeys then this place is going to meltdown by Sunday night.

Yep--all the 3-and-outs wore down our defense in game after game.

Interestingly, JC also played much better in the first half then he did in the second. His QB rating in the first half of games in 2007 was 82. Not world beating by any measure, but certainly high enough where if he played that way in both halves, fewer Redskin fans would be so down on him.
