View Full Version : Did anyone notice what Rocky McIntosh did ...

After he forced the fumble on Jeremy Shockey?

When he and Shockey fell to the ground, you can see that Rocky held down Shockey to keep him from getting to the ball. Shockey was trying to get up, and possibly could have had a great shot at getting the ball back. But Rocky hooked his arm around him just subtly enough to keep Shockey from having a shot.

Aye, thats a smart move...hope it wasn't illegal.

I did notice that actually on the replay. It was a smart play. It seemed like forever b4 someone got to the ball.

I wouldn't call it "subtle", but it was awesome!

I noticed that, but thought it was illegal.

I was at the game and mentioned to the gents behind me that he got lucky for not getting a penalty on that.

I thought if someone is on the ground you can lay on them, but not hold them.

Shockey just hasn't had much luck the past 2 games against us :)

Great play all around by Rocky.

Perfectly legal, and a very heads up play by Rocky. I noticed that too. Awesome!

Probably not more than 60,000 of the nearly 80,000 ES membership...:silly:

No, seriously, very heads-up play by Rocky Mac. Not too many guys in this league would have the kind of awareness to make that play AFTER the play, so to speak.

Yeah that was a very heads up move y Rocky (who had a real good day). It made Shockey even more frustrated. The more frustrated he gets, the more he takes himself out of the game! :D

It was an extremely heads-up play and is completely legal. I thought about it last night watching the Browns-Steelers game when Winslow was being covered by Troy Polamalu. The ball was deflected up in the air turning it into a jump ball. Polamalu tried to go up and get it and knock it away but what he should have done is what Rocky did and just grab him and tackle him. It was a very smart move by Rocky.

Yeah the hook "looked incidental" because of the way he stripped it then sat on him. :cardsuck:

that ball sat out in the open for at least 10 seconds. Good thing rocky had his mind about him enough to hold down shock or he probably would have gotten the ball back.

When I played football thats what they taught us to do. Same thing if your blocking a guy and get him to the ground, lay on top of him and don't let him up.

if the ball is loose it is live and everyone is fair game.

that was a great heads up play too..

That was a Miami U play. You know those boys talk mad trash to each other in playful ways. The wrap on Shockey is that you can make him fumble.

So McIntosh got the word and wanted to gloat about the time he made him fumble. Bet they were all sitting around talking bout all them times back at the U they made Shockey fumble. So McIntosh said, ****, I'll get me one of those plays!

It was completely legal, the ball was live, if the ref called the play dead,(in which case he would be ahem.. "taken care of" after the game ) it would be illegal, because it would be a delay of the game, some players do that under the 2:00, and get away with it.

Shockey wouldn't have gotten the ball even if Rocky didnt hold him down...

It felt like 3 days until we picked that ball up!

InsaneBoost

Isn't that illegal to do though, kinda like holding a player down with a couple seconds left.

That ball was on the ground long enough to lose air pressure.

It's great to see Rocky looking healthy. I was concerned about his recovery due to that nasty injury last year. He seems to be doing well....

Morneblade
September-15th-2008, 07:14 PM
That was a great heads up move on his part. Also, speaking of McIntosh, he looks bigger this year as well. Last year he looked kinda small at LB, this year he looks real solid.

ST is right here...if the ball is tipped, fumbled, etc...and considered a live ball, that's a completely legal play by Rocky. And a very heady play at that.

We were taught to do that and its pretty instinctive anyway.

Quite legal. You'll see it happen on about 60-70% of fumbles.

What you're thinking of is when a player has been downed and the opposing player impedes them (sits on them) to keep from returning to the huddle/sideline...that is because the ball is dead and the play is considered over...however during a fumble the ball is live and the play is still going so it is legal and was legal for Rocky to do that...was a heads up play unless one of the other Saints had gotten to the ball first :silly:

Why would anyone (who knows football anyway) think that it's not legal?

Peregrine
September-15th-2008, 11:15 PM
You can pretty much do whatever the heck you want after a fumble or the ball gets tipped. You can bite, scratch claw, whatever. If a ball gets tipped high in the air? Deck the receiver so a defender gets a clear shot at it.

i'm gonna guess cuz its the only time you see a player being legally allowed to tackle and hold down a player who does not possess the ball?

Smart play by Rocky. Definately didnt think it was legal. With everyone running full speed, it seemed as if that ball stayed there for a long time.

Because football fans usually dont read the rule book. A guy is blatantly being held. I guess it wouldnt make too much sense for a ref to call a penalty on that, but hey, I've seen officials throw the flag on some weak stuff.

This was a heads-up play, but this is taught in Football 101. Congrats to Rocky for paying attention.

If you'd watched more than a couple of games with a fumble, I don't know how you would have never witnessed such a thing happening.

So en light of Rocky playing such a good game and causing this fumble and even making sure that we recovered it, is it OK to say that Rocky's officially recovered from the injury? People were bashing him after that Giants loss. I'm happy to see him getting some recognition.

Oh, I just thought Shockey was enjoying 'The Shocker' and that's why he just laid there.

I didn't, nice catch, and thanks for sharing. I think Rocky's playing pretty well all things considered. He's been beaten in coverage a few times, but was always there for the tackle. Seems to be around the ball alot. Doesn't seem to have quite the explosiveness pre-injury, but that should come with time. I think he's doing a great job, and this is another example of it. Good job Rocky!
