Arenas to miss camp, season's first month
Gilbert Arenas confirmed that he underwent a surgical procedure this morning that "cleaned out some debris" in his left knee. Arenas, who has undergone two surgeries to repair the left knee in the last two seasons, has been limited during the rehab process all summer and said he has planned all along on not participating in training camp or the preseason.
Arenas, who signed a six-year, $111 million contract this summer, said he plans on returning to game action sometime in early December which would mean that he'd miss at least the season's first month. The Wizards open the regular season Oct. 29 at home against New Jersey and play a total of 14 games in October and November.
"I just had some floating debris in there that was slowing me down," said Arenas, who seemed to be in good spirits. "It was irritating the knee so we decided to go in there and clean it out. This should actually allow me to come back faster."
Arenas was limited to 13 regular season games last season and missed the final eight regular season games and the playoffs the previous season after tearing the left meniscus in the knee during a game against Charlotte on April 4, 2007.
I've been on vacation and just flew back into town late last night so I'm still in the process of fleshing this all out. I can't yet tell you whether or to what extent president Ernie Grunfeld and coach Eddie Jordan were prepared for all of this.
We do know that the team has two point guards on the current roster - Antonio Daniels and Dee Brown - and has precious little space underneath the luxury tax threshold. It would appear, as of right now, that the Wizards will go into the season with this group and wait for Arenas to get healthy.
More later.

Precisely why we shouldn't have given him all that money. The FO acted as if his knee isn't an issue, which it obviously is. Hopefully he will take his time coming back, we don't need him exacerbating it.

Man I told some buddies of mine that I'd do a thorough check of his knee before resigining him. They couldn't get rid of him now if they tried. Um Um Um.

The only good thing is we've seen athletes come back from more severe surgery (Carson Palmer, Donovan McNabb). Question is, w ith this being surgery #3 is Arenas now a complete shell of his former self or just a bit. We'll see in December.

It isn't that big of a deal...it is a minor surgery...the important part is that the structual part of the knee is fine.
It would be great to have Gil at the beginning of the year, but this isn't the end of the world people!

My cousin (who played college basketball) tore his meniscus and also had to have a few surgeries to clean out loose particles.
Anyone who's had knee surgery knows this isn't uncommon. I think its being somewhat magnified because of who Arenas is.
As Finkle stated above..the important thing is that the knee is structurally sound.

I knew when we didn't resign Roger Mason it would be a BIG MISTAKE! Now we are stuck with Dee Brown and Daniels. The back court is looking real thin now!

Actually, everytime he has these scopes he loses more cartiledge. While the knee maybe structurally sound, the danger is that he'll end up with bone on bone (i.e. Barry Bonds).
I think there are plenty of reasons to be concerned when a $100 million dollar player has 3 surgeries in less than two years. He has barely played in that time and so far the knee has not shown signs of improvement.

My thoughts as soon as I heard of this surgery. How long has it been since the Wizards season was brought to an end? He shouldve had this surgery like 2-3 weeks after our season ended. And I'm trying to be reasonable.....Actually he shouldve had it a few days after our last game. Just like how Carlos Rogers, Rocky McIntosh, and Jason Campbell did. This pisses me off, now he has to miss more time. What the hell, our F.O. couldnt have to tried to get him to take it earlier/

No it's not the end of the world, but this surgery seems like something that couldve been done a while ago. If there is a legimate reason as to why he didnt get it done a while ago, fine, I guess. But this dude got $11 mill contract and now he is on vacation, again. There is no reason he should be starting the season late, again.

You have to remember that Gil didn't even start working out until August.
So he wouldn't have known he needed additional surgery right after the season.
Basically,he's having the same surgery that Malcom Kelly just had.

That is definitely a possibility but I'm trying to remain optimistic.:)

The problem with this is not the surgery. Its what causes the floating particles. If it is the Meniscus (most common) you flush the particles than go to clean the actual Meniscus, you scrape the the "scraps" to make it clean.
Their lies the issue you are changing the shape of it so the patella no longer sits like it originally did. This goes on forever, minor surgeries constant flushing. Bad things guys bad things.

All this is doing, as it did the past two post-seasons, is delaying the inevitable realization that you can't win a championship/build a team around a point guard. A healthy Arenas would have proven this fact the past two post-seasons and we'd be appropriately moving in the direction of Plan B by now.
Instead, we're (Ernie) still under the illusion that we're a competitor with a healthy Arenas.

Some of you guys comments are just moronic in every sense of the word. This is common protocol, and its not your knee, so stop complaining. Theres no one set way to go through a situation like this. You can say he put it off... but realistically why would he do that? The man wants to be on the court and his work ethic is top notch. The primary goal to any health situation is to always try and put off surgical procedures if there are less invasive ways of accomplishing the same goal. Some of you guys sound like losers, crying over another mans knee. It's a 6 year contract.. the 1-2 months out of that to ensure hes 100% is nothing.
