Ken Harvey Joins The Washington Redskins as Director of Responsibility
ASHBURN, Va., Sept. 18
Newly-created position to manage resources aimed at promoting responsible conduct across the organization and the community
ASHBURN, Va., Sept. 18 -The Washington Redskins today announced that Ken Harvey has been appointed Director of Responsibility, and will serve as a resource and advisor in the development of responsibility initiatives focused on education and advocacy. The former linebacker will also work with the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation in bringing responsibility programs directly to the fans and the community at large.
"After playing in the league for many years, I believe I have an excellent read on the demands players face on a daily basis from teammates, management, friends, family and business associates," said Harvey. "I think the team can benefit from that experience, especially the young athletes."
END STORY
Good to see Ken back in the fold. He was one of my favorite Redskins when he played here.

Good. It's overdue, IMO.
There has to have been at least one player who did not receive the type of help and guidance they needed. Which probably contributes to free agent busts and draft busts.
It's a good thing and well worth the money.

But I hope he doesn't tell people what his title is....sounds like a joke job title.

Um...does anyone else think this sounds like a fluff job? I mean, you tell everyone to be responsible, and then what? Collect a check?;)
Actually, sign me up, I like the sound of this.

I don't see too many people dissing him. Dude played at a high level in this league for a very long time. That right there will get players' attention and respect, even before they meet him. He always was a class act. This is a very shrewd move by the Dan IMHO.

Saw Ken walking down the street in Reston about 7 months ago. He looked like he could lace it up right now. He has kept in shape and doesn't look a day older than London Fletcher. Congrats on the job Ken. Mad respect on how he sayed active in the community after he stopped playing.

So when a Redskin player screws up... we blame Harvey?
sounds like a glorified whipping boy

I recall the Cowboys creating a similar position for Calvin Hill several years ago, when they were having numerous run-ins with the law.
Maybe the Cooley incident had something to do with this, but who knows.
Maybe the idea is to let the players know, "look, if you act like an idiot of the field, you'll have to answer to this guy." :)

Maybe....I don't know though we are a pretty good team. Outside of the one practice offensive lineman last year the only arrest we have had since 2004 was ST21's ATV arrest I believe.

I think it's great that Dan Snyder is filling organizational positions with former players. I hope this continues. Harvey seems to be a real good dude and could be very helpfull to current players. Particularly the rookies and younger players. As much as I like Cooley, having an "adult" perspective could be a plus for him.

sounds like a glorified whipping boyDo you really think he's there to accept the blame when something goes wrong? I think it's a goodwill effort to help guys who could make the wrong decisions. Am I not cynical enough?

This sounds like the government position "Secretary Of Gettin' Down" from The Simpsons lol...But I'm gonna assume that with Cooley posting both his playbook AND his manhood on his blog and Portis goin' off on BMitch and the OLine in consecutive weeks, the FO felt something needed to be done to keep a lid on things. Having Harvey also work with the Skins' Charitable Foundation means he'll actually have enough responsibilities and duties to earn his paycheck. If you're gonna do this, then Ken Harvey is definitely a good choice....

Let's think of some more. I'll start:
Brian Mitchell hired as Directory of Community Relations and Team Morale.

I'm not suggesting we've had run-ins with the law...I'm just talking about general behavioral issues. Within the span of a week we had the Portis interview with the Post, and the Cooley incident. I'm not saying either incident is as big as getting arrested...just saying that the organization might be trying to nip pesky little issues like these in the bud before something bigger happens.

Imagine being at a dinner party and telling people that your job is "Director of Responsibility." OLS! What a goofy job title. It sounds like you're a babysitter.
Reading the job description, it could be a real job, but there should be a better title for it. I'm not coming up w/ it, though. I'm not on the Redskin payroll, so I'm not investing my time in thinking about it. ;)

Damn I wish he could still play. I would love to have Ken rush the QB in a role like Marcus has. That would be deadly with the rotation we have along the DL.
This Cat could ball and play some defense...

One of my favorite redskins.. It's always nice when a guy comes in from another team and immediately puts his team before himself.. Even after he retired he stayed involved and was even going to come out of retirement if the team needed him. Classy guy.. all the best.

Classy guy.. all the best.
I've had the fortune to meet Ken a few times...he still ranks up there with Gary Clark as the 'friendliest' player I've hung out with.

I know a guy who played for Washington in 2 pre-seasons. He told me and another friend that when he was there, his opinion was that Michael Westbrook could beat any man on that team down with the exception of one.......That individual was Ken Harvey.
Kitts said something to the effect that Harvey is like an 8th degree Green belt in one of the Martial Arts.
If our guys don't keep their name out of the papers, Ken'll kick their can for 'em.
Way to go Ken!
