Regulation: As the financial crisis spreads, denials on Capitol Hill grow more shrill. Blame an aloof President Bush, greedy Wall Street, risky capitalism — anybody but those in Congress who wrote the banking rules.
Such denials won't hold against the angry facts banging on their doors. The only question is whether the guilty party can keep up the barricade until Election Day.
A visibly annoyed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi rejected suggestions that Democrats share blame for the meltdown. "No," she snapped at reporters who dared ask.

That writer is hilarious. Blaming loans to minorities for the current crisis ignores the obvious. Short ARMs that are creating havoc in 2007 and 2008 clearly weren't issued in the early 90s. Since he brought up minority and poor neighborhoods however I'm happy to discuss those topics.
Subprime loans which make up a large percentage of problem loans were issued disproportionately to minorities and in low income areas. The thing people never talk about however is how many of those that recieved a subprime loan were qualifed for prime loans. This comes from, IMO, a problem with the rule book. It should be illegal to sell someone a subprime product when they qualify for better without disclosing this to them - and the lenders absolutely knew their clients were well qualified.
Nevermind the fact that SISA loans that allowed people to buy homes they very obviously couldn't afford didn't happen because of the Clinton administration. This happened during the boom when lenders went in for a massive money grab as prices skyrocketed.

The thread title should be "Democratic Congress tries to fix what Republican Congress broke."

Funny how its ok for you to call democratic congressmen gutless turds, but if someone says W isnt much smarter than a rock, you blow a gasket.
Then again, judging by your post, you seem to think that democrats were in complete control of all of Washington for the last two years and actually COULD have done something to fix this disaster. And that tells me you have no idea what you are talking about also.

Sorry, I thought the point was to make the title of the thread more true, not less true? Democrats don't have control of the Senate after all. It's 51-50 Republican, counting Cheney and Lieberman.

They've been in control in Congress for TWO YEARS, adn have done nothing.
Evidently they can't even find enough liberal Republicans to override a veto of any finance law they thought they might write
And God knows there's a buttload of liberal Repubs around now
So now you're telling me two years isn't a long enough time to fix a problem? How much time do you propose they need?

Complete control includes the whitehouse. Something republicans had for 6 years. They don't have a veto proof majority Sarge they can't pass what they want and we all know what... you know that too.

Sarge,
Why was the democratic Congress elected?
It was the people's way of telling Bush they didn't like what he was doing and how they stopped him. Anyone who blames the Congress for not doing anything, I ask you what should they do?. When a Congress and President don't agree on anything its hard for them to get anything done. Hence the name "do nothing Congress" That is exactly why they were elected.

They had a REPUBLICAN President who would veto anything they wanted! They had 51 Senators if you include LIEBERMAN who is a ****ing republican himself. They couldn't even break a filibuster.
Why don't you actually look at what party (republican) and even more specifically what person (phil graham) instituted the policies that led to this disaster; instead of blaming a non-filibuster-proof party that was working with a veto President.
You're honestly insane if you blame the democrats for this.

Gee, I don't know. Maybe they could reach out like McCain did on every ****ty bill that has a Dems name attached to his?
Maybe they could have gotten 60 votes in the Senate and whatever it is in the House they needed to override the veto
But NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
They've ben sitting on their asses in the majority for TWO FRIGGIN YEARS

Nope. You see, when you live in the real world instead of lib world, you have the things called "responsibilities" and "consequences"
The "consequences" of not haveing effective enough leadership to get some Lib Repubs to come to your side (And God knows there's enough of them out there nowadays) is getting the blame for things
Otherwise known in todays venacular as "Manning up"

So blame the liberals for not getting Republicans to vote they way the liberals want them to?
Wow Sarge. :D

Sarge,
What are the changes you would have liked to see them initiate? You state that they have done nothing.
Doesn't "they" include many (although not a majority) Republicans?
Couldn't/Can't those Republicans provide the impetus for initiating legislation in the Senate?
Couldn't the President ask the Congress for things he believes will help?
Couldn't you make a proposal to rectify the situation, and send it all members of Congress, the Administration and the Press?
The problem I have with your expressed views in this thread is that your blame is nearly 100% partisan, and expresses only anger rather than putting forward solutions or advancing a framework for discussion. Which coincidently is the precise thing you are angry at Congress, Liberals, Socialists, etc. for.
If your answer is, that you do not know enough, or have enough information to do so, do you really believe that the Democratic party majority in the House has better access? Heck, it doesn't appear that the Administration is including Senators and Congressmen from the Republican party to these secret fiscal discussions, and they are refusing to come down to the Hill and talk to Congress about it as well.
You will notice that I am not blaming President Bush, or the Republicans in Congress, nor am I responding to you in a hostile fashion. This is an undeniably ugly and frustrating situation. Let us all work together to solve it, instead of falling via angry 2 party partisanship.
