Personally, I think the penny should just be abolished. But they're making new ones:

WASHINGTON (WBBM) - The U.S. Mint unveils the penny’s first makeover in 50 years - a series of four coins commemorating the bicentennial of the birth of President Abraham Lincoln.

The coins are set to go into circulation next year.

The unveiling ceremony will be held at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington this morning at 9 a.m. Chicago time.

Images of the new 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial One Cent Coin designs will be available at that same hour.

In 2009, the United States Mint will put into circulation a series of four different one cent coins in recognition of the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln's birth and the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln cent.

While the obverse (heads side) will continue to bear the likeness of President Lincoln currently on the penny, the reverse (tails side) will change to bear four different designs, each representing a different phase in the life of Abraham Lincoln. The aspects of his life to be honored will be Lincoln's birth in Kentucky, his formative years in Indiana, his professional life in Illinois and his Presidency in Washington, D.C.

The first redesigned penny will be issued on the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln's birth, February 12, 2009. The remaining redesigned pennies will be released at intervals throughout 2009.

not bad but I wonder if we are starting to look too much like play money now. the bills are completely out of hand and I hope the coins dont go that way too. I do like these ones though..

Honestly, why are they wasting money on this?
It costs more than 5 cents to mint a single penny.

Pennies are as useless as tits on a bull. Outdated, a throwback to the days when you could actually get something worth having for under a dollar. A waste.

Absurd.

No reason to continue to make pennies, yet alone spend the time and money to design new ones.

What a waste.

I have to agree that the penny is the most useless form of currency in the US.

Anyone remember when they were talking about phasing them out and making them all worth 5 cents when turned into the bank?

Well the bill redesigns make sense because counterfeiting was completely out of hand. Something had to be done because counterfeiters were becoming too sophisticated.

I have it on good authority from Smootpointreally, GoSkins561, Michael33 and several other knowledgable Tailgaters that this is the real, secret design of the new penny as approved by the Mainstram media..

So while I hate the penny as well. How do we get rid of it exactly? I mean do we round everything to the nearest 5 cent? Who loses out on that money?

It was proposed that we round everything up to 5 cents and all of the pennies could be taken to a bank where people would get 5 cents for every penny. There would be a certain time period for this exchange and then after a set date the penny would be useless like it is now.

Or...

Give a credit per use regarding pennies.

So you go to the store and it costs 99 cents. You get a receipt for that penny.

You use that penny when needed. Same as a gift card.

Or make it a law that all prices must end with either a 0 or a 5 so that you don't up to four pennies back. :)

If it weren't for the penny everything would cost more. Everything would be rounded up to the nearest 5 cents and the consumer would lose out.

There is a reason so many penny references still exist.

Ala, 'counting your pennies, penny pincher, find a penny pick it up', etc.

The lost pennies would go to the companies. Most people won't accept that.
