View Full Version : Putting out the call to ES'ers in Detroit area

Sometimes, work just grants you a boon. I got offered a chance to travel to the Detroit area for a week for work, and it just happens to coincide with the Skins away game against the Lions. You better believe I'll be there, representing ES. Question is, do we have anyone else on this board who's from the Detroit area, and is planning on going to the game? I know nothing about the parking lots or surrounding area, and I want to hook into a Redskins tailgate.

I will be up there...So your coming to the land of the Wolverines...PSU gear is not welcomed..Seriously, isn't that the weekend of PSU and OSU? Shouldn't you try and do that...Hell the game won't be such a big deal after you lose to Michigan, Wisco and Purdue :silly:
Seriously, I am going to be in Michigan that weekend to visit sister and her family so lets meet up at the game and make fun of lion fans. :D

I will be there. Ford Field doesn't have a parking lot so people park all over the place. Eastern Market is a popular hangout for tailgating. That's probably the best place to meet up with Skins fans.

Well, my loyalty to the Skins comes before my loyalty to Penn State. That aside, we all have to travel for this project every once in awhile, and when I saw that Detroit was available during the Skins game there, I jumped at the chance. We should definitely get together, we need to figure out a spot in the parking lot, but we need to get a local on board so we can get a grill and everything, unless you can borrow one from your family.

No parking lot hmmm....well, I'll have to look up the Eastern Market location...I'm not familiar with Detroit at all. Is that where you're going to be?

Yea parking is a ***** around that place...its the complete opposite then FedEx. Im not sure about the Eastern Market location but Im down for it...I will see what my family is in the mood for...They usually don't even go to Lions games and last time I came up for the Skins game we just parked and went right in. Definetly not the way I prefer to enjoy myself for pre game but i was a guest and went along with it..this time i will make a suggestion if skins fans have something organized.

This is cool...I just need to get this list of names together, then we need to start figuring something out.

Alright, I have a little bit of information to add here. First off, here's the information about tailgating at Eastern Market, which does seem to be the best place, they have lots set aside for it.
http://www.detroiteasternmarket.com/Tailgating.html
Here's directions to the field from basically every direction, though if we're going to get a tailgate together, we'll need to modify these to the Eastern Market area.
http://www.fordfield.com/section_display.cfm?section_id=104&top=1&level=3
Finally, here's a crappy map, but it's the best I've found so far.
http://detroitlions.com/photos/DMapwithFF1.pdf
I'll try to get another one that is a little bit clearer. We should probably check with Redskins Roadtrips and see if anyone is going.

I'll be there with my wife and brother law (he's from Detroit). We got group tickets with a group of guys from Chicago I believe, and we're meeting up for a tailgate beforehand. PM Chicago_Skinz_Fan for info, he organized everything.

Looks like I'm game.
Flying out Sat. morning from Reagan and returning Sunday night.
Staying at the MGM in downtown Rock City.
The two ES road tailgates I've attended were a blast, first in Dallas and then GB last year. Can't wait for my third!

Since Millen got fired, Lions fans might start showing up instead of dumping their tickets. That being said it should still be easy to get tickets.
Agree with the Eastern Market location for tailgating (never seen it), but if you're looking to just park there are a bunch of little parking lots within a few blocks of the stadium. Being a run down dead city, vacant lots are everywhere.
For a dome, Ford Field is really nice. It does have a sterile feel, however. The game I went to last year around Xmas it was 32 degrees with 25-35 MPH winds. It was One of those games where I was glad to see a couple of crap teams inside instead of freezing my butt off.
The most expensive beer I've ever bought in my lifetime was in Ford Field last year. $11 for a Stella. It was decent size, though.

Hey I live a hour away from Detroit and I'm now going to the game. As of about 5 mins ago win I bought tickets 2 rows up on the 45 yd line(Skins Side).:D Hope to see you guys there. WARNING as you said Detroit is run down and dead in most areas. Be very careful as in don't leave anything important in your car. My buddy went down there last year and two cars in his lot were broke into. The reason for this was they had nice things in there car and the people that take your money say they will watch your car. Well they are lieing, most of them leave and some might be in on the robbing. So if you can spend a little more money and park near stadium do so.;) Other than that it should be a good day. I went to the last game there and the fans were pretty cool(Portis threw a TD that day). They have a nice stadium, but the prices are horrible. I think its a 11 dollars for a beer. So make sure to get nice and drunk before the game. Well that's at least what Lions fans do and they need to.:(

I wouldn't be surprised if half the stadium are redskin fans for the game

Wow missed this thread when it first came up... I live in Detroit 'Burbs so you bet I will be there. I have been to quite a few Lions games, and yes Eastern Market is the easiest (and only official) place to tailgate... Tickets should not be hard to get for this game, in fact worst case you should be able to get them at face through ticketmaster as the game is not sold out yet. If anybody needs any help with any Detroit information just shoot me a PM and I will help out.
We really need to start getting this organized... I suggest an official thread in the tailgate forum
ps... smurf85 Detroit is no different then any other major city when it comes to security (just another typical stereotype)... I have never had any problems going to events in the city. You just have to play it smart. Funny thing is when I first moved here, everyone wondered how I survived living in DC (which was the murder capital at the time...)

Well, I have a good news/bad news situation. The good news is that I just got a new job, I'm leaving contracting and entering federal service sometime soon, working for the government. This is both good and bad...I get government benefits, possibly an AWS schedule, etc.
The bad news is, I have no idea when my start date is, but if it's relatively soon...I'm no longer going to be traveling to Detroit.
On the other hand, if I do still wind up going, I'm going to be staying at either the Marriot or the Courtyard downtown, so I'd be able to walk to the field and to Eastern Market, they're only a few blocks away. No car to get busted into. And hell, even if I did drive and my car did get busted, it's going to be a rental from the airport anyway.
I'm excited about the new job, but I was really looking forward to this trip, as well as seeing an away game. I'll keep this updated.

Paige3girl told me she's going to this game with her husband. Her mom lives in the area. She's traveling at the moment though and is off the grid.

Grats on the new job... Keep us posted as to whether or not you will be able to make it up here to enjoy some good 'skins ball. Ford Field is a great stadium - It be great to get a nice loud 'skins fanbase there...

I cant wait for this game...its going to be like how it is when the wings play in DC (anyone remember the finals that year)...anyways skins fans are goin to own that place and as a Michigan Alumni/fan I will talk as much crap to those Lions fans as I want to as they to realize University of Michigan football is the closest thing they have to a pro team in this city.

I still don't know if I'm going or not, the trip hasn't been confirmed. If so, I'll either be in the Marriot or the Courtyard, a few blocks from the Stadium. Once I know for sure, I'll get a more official thread started.

That's where I'm staying. It'd be cool to get a Redskins fan gathering at a local bar Sat. night. We had a grand ole time in Green Bay the Sat. night b/f the game last year.
I'm not too concerned about tailgating at this urban venue. I'll be walking to the game and it looks like there are bars and restraunts in the area.
