Getting Defensive: Week 5

There weren't high expectations for many fantasy defenses coming into the 2008 season, but there certainly have been plenty of top-notch point producers. In fact, six of the top 40 scoring leaders in ESPN leagues are defenses. That means up to half of the teams in a twelve-team league are getting superb production out of this position. It also means their opponents will have to find good defensive starts to offset that advantage or risk having to play catch up at the other positions.

All this may sound ominous to those GMs who don't own one of the dominant defenses, but there is a silver lining in this week's column picks. Only two of the four great plays are among those top six scoring leaders, and one of my sleeper picks is available in a high percentage of leagues.

Philadelphia

I realize it might sound crazy to put the Eagles in the bad play category, but I'll use some of the same rationale I did last week when I said that the Cowboys were a poor play against Washington (and the single point they posted shows that was the correct assessment).

Jason Campbell has yet to make one bad decision this year. He is operating like a seasoned pro in Jim Zorn's offense. In addition, his 96.3 passer rating against Philadelphia in 2007 shows that he has a good track record against a Jim Johnson defense. The Redskins have given up seven sacks this year, which bodes well for the Eagles, but that won't be enough to offset the lack of turnovers that will limit this defense's upside.
