Jerry Jones: Romo could play

October 16, 2008

Posted by ESPN.com's Matt Mosley

Just when you thought you'd seen everything at Valley Ranch, owner Jerry Jones announced this morning that he played catch with quarterback Tony Romo before practice Wednesday. That's right, the Father Flanagan of the NFL caught several passes from Romo in trying to determine how much zip he could put on the ball. STATS Inc. had Jerry with two drops, but said he caught the ball well in traffic.

The NFC Beast reported Wednesday that Romo was lobbying coaches to let him play Sunday against the Rams. On his weekly radio appearance on the "Dunham and Miller Show," Jones said of Romo, "He very well could play."

As I wrote Wednesday, Romo truly believes he can play through the pain. But the Cowboys are concerned about him getting hit again and having to miss even more time. The ESPN satellite truck is parked at Valley Ranch and Ed Werder is standing by. The players are talking to reporters right now, but I'd be shocked if Romo makes an appearance. Meanwhile, Brad Johnson continues to take all the reps with the first team.

We'll see if Jerry does a better job of concentrating on the ball this afternoon. He has a tendency to cradle the ball instead of catching it with his hands. But he went to Arkansas as a guard in the 1960s, so we'll give him some grace.

Pinkie meet helmet, Romo meet IR list ;) This is so dumb and only shows a sign of desperation if he does start!!

If Williams isn't ready, they could always line Yellowtooth up opposite Me-O.

Let me see if I understand this right.

A player with an unparalleled propensity to fumble the ball is going to play with a broken finger that prevents him from adequately gripping the ball.

That's the scenario we're looking at, right?

Don't forget that Jerrah and his medical knowledge has okay'd Romo to play, after he played a game of catch with his QB

Only in Dallas

The owner THE OWNER is playing catch with his QB to decide if he is OK to start? Seriously?

You would think that would be something that the training staff and, you know, Head Coach and OC might have the say so on.

Jerry Jones is becoming the new Al Davis - lets hope that trend continues.

Jerry has stated the call is up to Phillips and the only way Jerry will get involved with this decision to play or not is if it's determined the risk is too great for the possibility of making the injury worse.. nice bait, but no go there guys sorry.

We all know Jerry is pulling the strings, he'll want to throw Romo in there right away, greatly increasing his already alarming fumble rate. I'm sure opposing defenses will be targeting that hand, I sure as hell would

I say we start a drinking game on Sunday...for every Romo fumble, everyone take a drink.

Remember, too much alcohol can lead to alcohol poisoning and death...so, maybe one drink every three turnovers is better.

Categorize catching passes from Romo to determine the QB's velocity. Involvement in the situation, or distance from the situation?

Jerry stated that the Cowboys were not pursuing a trade for a WR.

Jerry stated that is investigation showed that Adam Jones did nothing to warrant any further discipline from the league.

Hmm, maybe Jerry doesn't quite tell it like it is?

Phillips: Don't count Tony out

October 16, 2008

Posted by ESPN.com's Matt Mosley

Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips just opened his Valley Ranch news briefing by fielding 13 consecutive questions regarding Tony Romo's status for Sunday's game in St. Louis. For the record, I still don't think Romo's going to play, but the Cowboys are going to drag this out for another day or two.

Phillips said Romo participated in practice Thursday on a limited basis.

"I thought he threw all right," said Phillips. "He actually threw the ball pretty well. The only thing about it is a quarterback just throwing the football isn't all they do. I'm not going to count him out as far as the game's concerned."

Dr. Phillips was all over the map after that, but it sounds like the Cowboys are serious about trying to get Romo ready for the Rams. I'm told athletic trainers Jim Maurer, Britt Brown and Greg Gaither have put in a lot of hours working on a splint for Romo's pinkie. He used the splint during Thursday's practice and I'm told he was able to put a lot of velocity on the ball. He also took a few snaps and didn't feel any significant pain.

Several players talked about how inspirational it was to see Romo trying to play through the injury during Thursday's open locker room session. Phillips told a story about how his father Bum's Oilers broke Terry Bradshaw's hand one year, and then he came back two weeks later and lit them up.

Phillips also talked about how Romo has a little experience with an injured finger.

"He said he'd cut his finger in college before and had games where the finger was wrapped up ... it is a fracture, though. We're not talking about a bruise."

What the Cowboys are concerned about is Romo causing further injury to the finger. Listening to Dr. Phillips, it sounds like it wasn't a clean break, which probably would've required surgery.

I think it was very important to Romo that his teammates realize how much he wants to play. And I also think he's setting up a comeback attempt against Tampa Bay the following week. Jerry has said that Phillips will have the tie-breaking vote on whether Romo plays. Romo has already cast his vote. It sounds like the Cowboys will make a decision after practice Friday, but it's not like Phillips is going to tell everyone.

Again, I think it's 70-30 that Romo doesn't play. Much more to come.

Inspirational?? Give me a break. It took a call from Brett Favre for him to talk about wanting to play. You want inspiration, what about that football player from Mesa State that had his pinky amputated so he could continue to play and help his team

It's not like Romo could opt out of playing at this point, even if he thinks it's a bad idea. He's going to get hurt even worse and then Jerrah will blame the trainers or the coach but never consider how much obvious pressure he put on this guy to play.

ESPN said the person making the decision on Romo playing is... Jerry JONES!

That's gotta be emasculating for Phillips. Does ge call the plays or have any role as HC besides talking to the media and holding a clipboard?

This is just plain stupid...there is NO reason Romo should play. If it were the Giants, or Bucs or a GOOD team -- I'd say play him. But it's the Rams...so long as they turn the ball over umpteen times, they will win. Without Romo...

If they want Romo to play, let him play. We will just see him on IR after game.

The Stay Puft Marshmallow Coach? Not likely.
