View Full Version : The Cowboys are a fundamentally flawed team.

No matter how many "stars" Jerrah tries to accumulate on offense, the Cowboys are dead in the water. I have serious reservations as to whether or not they will even make the playoffs this year. The makeup and character of this team is not championship level. Heck, I don't think they have the mettle to win the tough December games they will need to qualify for the playoffs.
1. They have a dynamic offense that can put points on the board. However, in December, when the best defenses rise to the top, their offense is not built to sustain drives and eek out close wins. It is boom or bust for the Cowboys, as we have evidenced the last several weeks. The main culprit is Romo and Garrett. Romo simply does not protect the football during the most critical portions of a football game; look at their most damning losses over the previous 2 seasons and each one has Romo coughing up the ball during crunch time. Garrett treats the offense as if it were a video game vice an NFL franchise with SB aspirations. His readiness to completely abandon the run game is troubling. Perhaps he realizes that the offensive line does not have the make up to take over games running the ball?
2. The defense also has stars all over the field and can produce sacks and turnovers in bunches. However, a critical mistake was made and will cost this team dearly. To listen to Puke fans, signing Pacman Jones was a no risk move. I disagree. When Jerrah signed Pacman, he crossed the nickle CB need off his list and, at that point, entered a relationship where he completely depended on Jones. Now, we are at a point where he and Newman are out for a long period of time (please tell me the last time an NFL player with Newman's injury returned in a month!). In the NFL, you have to be able to pressure the QB and stop the pass to win playoff football. The Cowboys have a fatal flaw that is going to be an achilles heel for the rest of the season.
3. Coaching. The team is an undisciplined lot; no arguing the fact. Wade has his flaws that everyone is well aware of. The problem is that things like discipline have to be instilled over a long period of time (training camp?). You can't turn on a switch and have everyone respond. The Cowboys are largely a microcosm of their owner and management. Why should we be surprised that the team is not mentally tough when the owner purposely creates a circus atmosphere around them. There are a few players on the team that get it. I feel bad for them. When one of the leaders of your team comes out and says he is disgusted with the organization, well, the writing is on the wall. I don't understand how a self-made billionaire cannot understand the effect his antics have on his team. It makes me wonder if his number one goal is to win a championship or to create buzz to sell tickets/naming right/etc for the new stadium?
Times yours.

A lot of what you say might be true, but how can you say that the Cowboys ignored the CB position? They drafted two CB's, one in the second and one in the fifth I believe. Jerry knew not to rely on Pacman.
Westbrook36
October-18th-2008, 12:29 PM
He drafted a CB in the first and one in the fifth, right? A championship level team would not rely on these type of first year players to play meaningful snaps. That is just foolish. To really address the position, he should have signed a veteran during free agency or traded for a player. I will say without reservation that a first round pick for DeAngelo Hall would have been much better spent than one for RW.

It seems to me that the whole Dallas Cowboy love affair is coming apart at the seams except in the media. If they lose this week then the media will be questioning their meddle also. Jerry Jones let his ego get in the way of good sound judgment. Hailing yourself the savior of troubled souls and that you are willing to help every troubled player just to make an impact is worst than what Dan Snyder has ever done. I guess the tide is turning and the Jerry Jones aura is starting to turn sour. If the Cowboys don't make the playoffs the doors of "Club Wade" will close and the Garrett Era will begin.

We have plenty of character and cohesiveness on this team. This team has been together, the core of it, for a few years now. Most of our team was actually drafted by the Cowboys...
The difference between what the Skins did and what Dallas is doing, is the Cowboys have a team that is ready to take the next step. You do what it takes to put you over the top. Whether it works or not remains to be seen.
This is no different than Jerry going out and getting Charles Haley or Deion Sanders. They were moves made to put the team over the top. It remains to be seen whether RW will do that for them.
The Skins would void their entire draft to bring on so so players. It is a big difference.
The Cowboys still have 9 picks for this years draft, that is a good number of picks. That is the difference...

I agree with the premises of this thread but it is too early. It is hard to call a 4-2 team "fundamentally flawed" and have it mean anything.
In a few weeks, when the Cowboys are 5-7, this thread will be more appropriate.

By failing to get a deal done false hope, faith and promise was made to the existing WR's without the initials TO.
Jerry is throwing money around like the old Snyder whether contract extensions or new signings. Regarding draft picks Cowboy fans say it wasn't bad because we still have more draft picks. Forgotten are how those picks were sccumulated, they did come at a cost.
Character and cohesiveness were also tossed from Jerry lowering his standards below any other NFL team to bring in players with major "character flaws".
The Redskins never voided their entire draft although I'll give you that they made many trades involving a variety of picks. Also some of those trades did prove to be quite beneficial to the Redskins.

Not sure why you feel the need to exaggerate that point.
Maybe the skins didn't "void" their draft, but they certainly had more than one draft where they picked once and then went and played golf until the next day..
You can bash the RW move, I absolutely love it. He is one of my favorite players and I am glad they went and got him. They probably overpaid for him, but I think it will be worth it in the end. You can worry about the "midstream" part of the deal, I'm just happy they got him.

I wouldn't talk down about the Cowboys coming off a loss to the BROWNS.It's nice that you're confident about your team, but the NFC is tough conference. Out of 16 teams only Seattle, St. Louis, and Detroit seem to be completely out of the running for a playoff spot. Every other team is 2 games or less behind the Cowboys and/or out of first place in their division. That's 13 teams fighting for 6 spots. And Dallas plays in the toughest division in the conference.
I'm not saying it's definite that the Cowboys are going to miss the playoffs. But it's going to be a dogfight, and you're acting like it's a foregone conclusion. Last year the Giants didn't clinch a spot until the second to last week of the season, and the Redskins went all the way down to the wire. I have no idea why you're so supremely confident. It's very unlikely that the Cowboys are going to finish the season 13-3.

As for Westy's opening post, it's weird but there's some real logic in there. I'm not used to that from him lol ;)...I agree with the premise, but as someone else said, it's too early to reach this conclusion about the Cowboys. The signs are there, though...but hell, they could run off 4 wins in a row and be sitting at the top of the NFC East at 8-2. Then again, so could the Skins lol ...
However, even if they DID win 4 in a row, it wouldn't disprove Westy's point, just to be clear. There are some real flaws in how Jerruh has decided to run this team....which is ironic seeing as how before the season started the Cowboys were deemed the closest to a "flawless" team that the NFC had to offer.

Well Westy, that was a good post. Really- I agree completely.
I just got done reading "Boys will be Boys"- on LKB's suggestion- it is amazing how brutal former Cowboy Players, coaches, and insiders are in assessing Jerruh's player/personnel decision making. He's HORRIBLE.
I think what we're seeing here is the Parcells' era of smart FA and heads up draft picks slowly losing steam. Jerruh is just unable to keep the fire going. Because he's a big ****ing idiot mostly. But that's not all- it's okay to be a big ****ing idiot, but you need to be able to recognize that in yourself. And hire/surround yourself with people who can make smart decisions.
Jerruh has only done that at 2 points in his time as owner- 1 with Jimmy Johnson and 2 with The Tuna. Both times, his ego has gotten in the way of what worked, and the wheels came off both times. He just wants to play with his toy, and that's more important to him than winning. (apparently)
It will be fun to watch the downhill slide of the Cowboys over the next 5 years. Wade Phillips is Barry Switzer v 2.0, LOL

I just don't understand why it is so hard to see reality. I know I can be a huge pain in the ass when the Eagles are good; but when they are average or below average, I come right out and say it. When others say that they suck, I normally agree with them. I just can't see why people get all bent out of shape when someone tells them the truth. There was no spin to this thread. Everything in the OP was pretty much dead on.
It's because puke fans "expect" Super Bowls....every year.
If they went into the season thinking they had an inferior team, they'd self-destruct.
Poor puke fans....welcome to reality.
Alas, next summer in TC, the bravado will return...2008 will be viewed as an aberration, and puke fans will delude themselves once more into believing they are "America's Team."
They must think America is for losers.
Too bad. Too sad.
Quite funny, though.

What will puke fans do when they drop to like 15 on the ESPN rankings?:laugh:

Good post Zoony. I've been saying for years that when Jimmy Johnson and Bill Parcells handled the draft, Dallass has been one of the best teams in the league. When Jerrah handles the draft and GM duties, they are average or poor. They can have 9 picks, but if you don't do anything with those picks (ahem...Detroit) it doesn't do you any good. We had all 10 of our picks make the team and 9 have survived so far and I think Brooks will be back at some point.

Jerry has become the pre Gibbs2 Dan Snyder. You know, the Dan Snyder that was bashed by Cowboy fans for all the reasons they're now backing Jerry. Character and cohesiveness do matter.:2cents:
Jerrah has always been the Pre-Gibbs 2 Dan Snyder. The difference is that hehas a bigger ego which is saying something. Jerrah craves and demands the credit and attention for any success that the Cowboys have. The difference is that Snyder appears to have learned his lessons from past failures.

Any questions?
Tha?
Naah no questions man. I realize my team stunk it up yesterday and you're looking pretty good right now. My problem with your thread is that it's very definitive and you obviously hate Dallas. This is why things you say about Dallas really deserve very little merit. I fully expect a feeding frenzy right now but it's a long season. The crazy thing is this usually happens to us in December. Perhaps we can right the ship this year when it matters.

Westy has been dead on about the pukes.
What bothers you is that the truth hurts.

The point that you're missing is guys like you and WB are ALWAYS negative towards Dallas. We could be 7-0 right now and you'd be finding fault somehow someway (ie overrated, lucky, eating the cheese, playing bad teams/teams with injuries etc.). It's like a broken clock being right twice a day. I have eyes. I can see the flaws in my team right now. This doesn't mean I agree with his every word.

Really?
Why would we be positive about a team that has failed to win a playoff game in a dozen years, yet gets unprecedented media attention for absolutely nothing special?
Why would we hate about that?

I get the hate. It's no big deal. Lol... the point is you're not objective.. not that you have to be. If this were 1992 you'd be trashing Jimmy Johnson, Aikman and Emmitt.

Thereafter, when the Cowboys were 3-0, I posted in this forum that they have the resume of the best team in the NFL. THE BEST TEAM IN THE NFL. At the time they did. So I simply can't accept you saying that I skew reality based off of my hatred.

I have no problems with your threads man. I've been a little edgy lately for obvious reasons so I have to restrain from the attacks. You've presented yourself in an intelligent manner so I give you props for that. This is a good time for you and you redskins buddies so enjoy. We'll see how it all plays out.

Not at all. It would be difficult to trash winners.
The pukes haven't won anything recently.
No big games.
No playoff games.
When they deserve some respect come back.
Right now they're suffering because they have no backup to Romo, something that was pointed out here as a deficiency many, many times.
They only recently acquired a #2 WR who probably won't help much because he's an injury-waiting-to-happen, what-about-me kind of guy.
Sparano is gone, and it shows. Bill is gone, and it shows.
Only Jerruh stays...and it shows.

They won a playoff game in 1996. It's only been a couple years longer than the Cardinals.
