Ok so basically the giants and us are tied. The only difference is that we have a better divisional record. So how come everyone puts the giants in 1st place over us all the time. I thought the divisional record stat dictated standings in our division??
Can anyone explain this mystery??

Like others have pointed out, they have a better record than us.
But even if we were tied, first rule in a tiebreak is head to head and they beat us so they'll be ahead of us until we even it out by beating them later in the season or if we end up in a three way tie and head to head no longer is applicable.

Can anyone explain this mystery??
2 ways that I can explain this -
1) In baseball you always hear them talk about a team being % points ahead or behind of another team. This is because until the end of the season there is often a disparity in the number of games a team has played. If team A is 49-51, they are one game above .500 but they're winning % is 49%, team B could be virtually tied at 48-50 having played 2 fewer games, but their percentage is 48.9%, so they are percentage points behind team A.
Giants are 5-1 (83.3%) and the Skins are 5-2 (71.4%), it just gets magnified in the NFL because there are fewer games and it doesn't happen as often.
2) One of my favorite adages is "you can get more wins, but you can't take away losses" which is an argument for team B being ahead of team A in the example above, but, explains easily why the skins are ranked behind the giants. Both teams can add more wins, but the skins can't get rid of that second loss.
Hope that helps.

If, at the end of the regular season, two or more clubs in the same division finish with identical won-lost-tied percentages, the following steps will be taken until a champion is determined.
Two Clubs
1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs).
2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.
3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.
4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
5. Strength of victory.
6. Strength of schedule.
7. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
8. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
9. Best net points in common games.
10. Best net points in all games.
11. Best net touchdowns in all games.

Yeah it does, sort of. I know people have slammed me, but it's a legit question. There have been years when dallas and us were tied and we had the better record yet they placed them above us.

The Redskins are 2-1 in the division while the Giants are 1-0 in the division. In order for it to mean anything the Giants would have to lose a division game and have the same record as the Skins. Then if it came down to a tie breaker the Redskins would technically be on top. I believe this is the case. :lionsuck:

Wow. I'm not sure what is the worst part about this thread. It's either the complete number of responses that are just antagonistic, or that fact that all those jerk responses missed the entire point of the question.
For the most part, no, division record really isn't that important. Standings are determined by overall record, even within the division. The only time that division record is important is in a tie breaker for the playoffs. Refer to the earlier post by BigZ in reference to order of tie breakers.
Also, since the same number of division games and overall games have not been played at this point, you must look at win percentage and not just total number of wins.

Overall record takes precedent over division record when determining place in the division. If both teams were 5-2, then yes the Redskins would be in first due to their better division record.
Giants .833
Redskins .714

:doh:
There has never been a time in the past or will be in the future where the Doughboys and us are tied, we have a better record, yet they are ahead of us. That goes against all rules of the universe. If we have a better record (ie. winning percentage) we will always be in front of the other team.
Perhaps we had the same win-loss record, but can never be tied in reality due to tie-breaks. The tie breaks only come into play is IF both teams have the exact same winning percentage.
Also, if we were tied with the Giants now, say both were 5-2. They would be ahead of us since they beat us once.
Also, 1-0 divisional record is better than our current 2-1. So they are ahead of us in the head-to-head as well as divisional record. For now. That won't last too much longer :point2sky:point2sky:point2sky

This thread could make sense if we did actually have the same record. But 5-1 is always better than 5-2, regardless of any other tiebreakers. Just wait a few weeks; we'll have our bye and then we'll get to see how we rank against the Giants. I do think that we will be very close, if not tied for the same record as the Giants by the end of the season.

When the NFL lists their standings (and they get printed as released in the newspapers), they ignore all NFL tie breakers.
Instead, they sort the teams by W-L record, and if there's a tie, then they go alphabetical by the team's (city's) name.
I'm certain that the fact that this means that Dallas starts every year listed first, and Washington starts last, isn't a coincidence.

Division record does not matter unless the teams have the same exact overall record. The Giants right now are 5-1 while the Redskins are 5-2. That is all that matters right now. If they ever become tied in the future, than tiebreakers matter.

Thanks 81, Thanks. I really needed that.
The only time that teams would be ahead of us and we really were tied is in the beginning of the season and say Every team was 1-0 and neither team played each other. Then they would set it up by alphabetical order and Washington (ya see D, N, and P are before W) would be in last even though we were all tied.

81,
as others have noted, divisional records only matter if both teams have the same record. Right now, the giants have a higher winning percentage then the Redskins, so they're in first place. Hopefully that will change as the season progresses.
BTW, I have a question for you:

Nah, we have over time pulled ahead of NYG because our wins have been close, therefore more hard-fought, plus we beat the Browns who beat the Giants, plus the Phillies won tonight and they only won by 1 run and since they now have the World Series advantage, and won in a close one, all signs point to the Redskins in first place in the NFCE. Failing (Rod Stewart)
I am failing, I am failing,
Home again cross the sea.
I am failing, stormy waters,
To be near you, to be free.
I am flying, I am flying,
Like a bird cross the sky.
I am flying, passing high clouds,
To be with you, to be free.
Can you hear me, can you hear me
Thro the dark night, far away,
I am dying, forever trying,
To be with you, who can say.
Can you hear me, can you hear me,
Thro the dark night far away.
I am dying, forever trying,
To be with you, who can say.
We are failing, we are failing,
Home again cross the sea.
We are sailing stormy waters,

There are many “fails” in the tags below
There's a clueless guy who will never know

But it's my destiny to sing this sad refrain
There's a real dumb post on the board today

I'm failing away, set an open course for the virgin sea
I've got to be free, free to face the life that's ahead of me
On board, I'm the captain, so climb aboard
We'll search for a big clue on every shore
And I'll try, oh Lord, I'll try to carry on
I look to the sea, reflections in the waves spark my memory
Some happy, some sad
I think of messageboard friends and the posts we had
We live happily forever, so the story goes
But somehow I missed out on that big ol' clue
But we'll try best that we can to carry on
A gathering of angels appeared above my head
They sang to me this song of hope, and this is what they said
They said come fail away, come fail away
Come fail away with me
Come fail away, come fail away
Come fail away with me
I thought that they were angels, but to my surprise
They climbed aboard their starship and headed for the skies
Singing come fail away, come fail away
Come fail away with me
Come fail away, come fail away
Come fail away with me

It's the way you ride the fail that counts,
Here's a happy one for you.

Making your way on ES today
Takes everything you've got;
Taking a break from all your fail
Sure would help a lot.
Wouldn't you like to get away?
All those posts when you've got no clue,
The thread is on the board;
And you get N.N.T.'d
Now you face an angry horde;
And your ninja text didn't show;
Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your fail,
And they're always glad you came;
You want to be where you can see,
Our troubles are all the same;
You want to be where everybody knows your fail.

There are 2 reasons the Giants are in first place even though we have the same number of wins.
1) The Giants beat us head to head and are 1-0 against us so even if we were both 5-2 the Giants would still be ahead of us as this would be the 1st tiebreaker.
2) The Giants only have 1 loss and we have 2.
NFC Beast
October-26th-2008, 11:03 AM
Ok so basically the giants and us are tied. The only difference is that we have a better divisional record. So how come everyone puts the giants in 1st place over us all the time. I thought the divisional record stat dictated standings in our division??
Can anyone explain this mystery??
wow.... So basically, you are saying 5-1 is equal to 5-2, and you have a better division record even though the Giants are 1-0 (100%) (beating the skins) and your team is 2-1 (.667).
makes perfect sense to me...
