Rep. Robin Hayes (R-N.C.) has conceded that he did tell a North Carolina crowd that "liberals hate real Americans that work and accomplish and achieve and believe in God," even though he initially denied making such a statement.
Now he says he didn’t mean it that way and he was just trying to rev up a campaign rally.
Hey guys, he only made those comments in the interest of pissing off an angry mob, so you know, that makes it all better lol.

Hayes had followed Rep. Patrick McHenry, also a North Carolina Republican, who laid out the choice between McCain and Obama.
"It's like black and white," yelled someone from the crowd.
BTW, Hayes is a joke. He's been about as good for NC as Elizabeth Dole.

I like his point that if big cities such as New York and Washington DC are not "real America", Bin Laden must be pissed that he attacked the wrong place. :D
And here's a video interview with a "real American woman" in case we weren't sure what she thinks ;)

You weren't paying attention then. In 2004, it was either support the Republican agenda in fighting the Iraq war or else you hate the troops.

I think it's perfectly OK to call people who believe in traditional American values "real Americans." It's a compliment to them, not an insult to you.
Do you have a problem with those on the opposite side of traditional American values (abortion rights activists, proponents of gay marriage, etc) calling the traditionalists closed-minded idiots or hate mongers?

I'm in NC too and literally an Obama ad will run and a McCain ad will follow directly behind it and vice versa.
I'm just ready to get the election over. I'm sick of political ads.

Sure its an insult to me, because it says by implication that if I don't agree with their version of "traditional American values" means that I'm not a "real American" and by implication means that I'm obviously some other inferior brand of American. It's completely arrogant, partisan and divisive, and at its worst McCarthyistic.

Not sure how you quantify "traditional" American values.
Most Americans share a set of common values - regardless of where they sit on the political spectrum.
Also, how do we define "traditional" and where do we draw the line? There are plenty of "traditional" values that have disappeared over time.

Wow that right there is just sad. I have seen too much of that in my country and I really get sad when I see someone echo those sentiments in what I consider the best country in the world.
p.s. so I assume you would not get angry if we said you were not a "real" Redskins fan...just a poser.

Don't even know what you're referring to, in the past few days I've both defended Republicans and disassociated myself with Dems/Liberals or whatever you want to call them that were saying things I didn't agree with.
But if you want to accuse me of that, pot meet kettle.
When's the last time you jumped in a thread about a legit racial issue and defended anything other than what you see to be as an attack that every white person is a racist?
EDIT: If you're referring to this thread when speaking of "oversensitivity" - then yes, I don't find it to be productive to start calling any group "real" Americans. I can guarantee you that I'd type the exact same thing if it was said about conservatives/Republicans/whatever.
If you have, that's fine but I definitely have never seen it and anytime I try to debate it, you seem to get pretty upset - hence my use of the word sensitive.

and for another nice bit, I quote the fundraising letter I recieved from Sarah Palin yesterday-
"But the Obama-Biden Democrats and their allies are set to raise over $1 billion to reletentlessly flood America's airwaves with their negative and false attacks against our Republican candidates."
This one if fun as well-
"We Republicans reject the Democrats' fearful and pessimistic mentality. When we are able to get our message past the liberal mainstream media filter - directly to the voters - the vast majority of the American people agree with our confident, optimistic view of principled, conservate government and opportunity for all."
Sadly, Extremeskins is now part of the liberal mainstream media filter. We clearly are standing in their way of delivering the message of confident, principled conservative government.
bad us :( I'm going to go spank myself now, because Sarah isn't coming to Oregon to do it (I guess that means we aren't real America either).

You're probably right, kidding or not. :)
But still, every campaign in the history of this country has said good things about "their" people that could be taken as an insult by the other side. If you want that eliminated, that's fine, truly, but eliminate it all.
No more "progressives." I think my way of thinking is more geared toward progress, and it offends me that the term "progressive" insinuates otherwise.

No that is not why. You disgust me because what you are spewing leads to divisive politics and can lead to a system in which freedom of speech is curtailed. If you establish who is real and who is not then you can discriminate against those who are fake and refuse to treat them as equals. This goes against all the morals of our democracy as every man is to be treated equally. It is not the fact that you have this opinion or that you voice it that disgusts me. It is the fact that you truly believe it and who knows what someone like you would do if they were ever in power.
*disclaimer* this is a very touchy subject for me because I have seen this exact ideology ruin my country (Cuba) and lead to the killing and imprisonment of thousands of innocent people.

This is a thin skinned reaction honestly. Sure, urbanites have a right to be offended, but honestly it's harmless pandering to the crowd and boilerplate rhetoric. It's standard silliness. Now, if this was said in the middle of Times Square and became a major part of the stump speech wherever they went I'd be more concerned.
But while I could be offended by this, I'm not. It's just giving love to the crowd that came. At the heart of it is something rotten... an idea that there are lesser Americans, but I choose to hear it as giving love rather than fomenting hate.

I wasn't offended by the comments, I actually found them pretty humorous.
The trying to put a label on what is a "real American" is and what values those "real" Americans hold is kind of divisive though.

I was at work last night and a guy that is a big southern baptist started spewing this stuff out, " Obama will take our guns" We are fighting in Iraq to keep the terrorist out of America," and last but not least my favorite, " I am praying for you to not vote for Obama and everyone who is considering voting for him to change there heart." Both sides clearly see politics as warfare.
Divide and Conquer. Fragment and rule absolutely.
It seems the main difference between the campaigns now. One side is item X, the other for its opposite. The desperation, anger, frustration, and stridence of the tone comes from the side with the most to lose. The politicians know its a game. Unfortunately, some of their followers do not, perhaps because of the absolutest tactics being used.
Something has changed. I don't recall so much discussion in a political campaign about 'real' this or 'un' that since McCarthy retired. I never heard dialog like that from Reagan when he campaigned. Aren't we all Americans, whatever our beliefs?
Divided we fall.

It's always fun to tell religious folk that Jesus was a liberal. I do this with my relatives a lot -- many of them are evangelical -- and they usually respond with some very un-Christian comments and then we change the subject and talk about stuff that really matters. You know, like the Skins.
