I recieved a letter in the mail today from the college I graduated from, the letter is asking for $150 in parking fines.

The kicker is, the fines occured in July of 2005, over 3 years ago. This is the first i've heard of it, I have no idea why 3 years later they decided to send me this letter.

I really have no desire to give this school another $150, at the time of the fines the parking situation at the school was a nightmare because of construction.

Would I be in any legal trouble if I did not pay this and just ignored the letter?

It was likely turned over or sold to some collection outfit who will continue to pester you.
They can of course get a judgment against you or (if you reside in or visit that state) cause some minor problems.

more detail is needed to be specific, but it is likely safe to ignore your debt...deadbeat;)

thanks for replying let me try to give you all the specifics.

I don't think it was sold to a collection agency because the letter is from the parking services of college.

It is a state school, not sure if that makes a difference, maybe the state of NC would get involved?

haha, if you know only knew what this school put me through you'd think they owed me $150, probably more.

I transferred to the school from another college and I once took 3 classes that I had already taken at my previous school, my advisor failed to see this on my transcripts and ignored my request to check and see if I had already taken these classes under a different name at my first school.

He admitted his mistake after the semester, when I had completed the 3 classes for the 2nd time

let me know if you need any more specifics.

Technically they could suspend your license until you pay it off, and you would have an extremely minor warrant out for your arrest. I've never seen it happen but that's worst case scenario.

nope-if these were university tickets (not official police ones) they can't suspend your licence. they can withhold your degree (too late) or try to publically shame you, but that about it.

If you get an income tax refund, they'll take it out of that. Happened to me, just not with parking tickets.

The University Police at my school are a sworn police agency in the state of MD so the tickets they issue are the same as issued by agencies like the Maryland State Police. If I got a parking fine and didn't pay it they could forward my info to the MVA and I wouldn't be able to renew my tags.

You need to find out what their policy is for not paying the tickets.

(or you could just pay the tickets and not worry about it).

brikem05 is correct

Unpaid parking tickets are considered a judgment in NC and it will likely cause you trouble with DL or vehicle registration in the future.

Many states are going to this to boost collections.
