(CNN) -- A Pennsylvania woman told police she was attacked at an ATM in Pittsburgh by a robber who became angry when he saw a John McCain bumper sticker on her car, a spokeswoman for the Pittsburgh Police Department said Thursday.


Police cannot confirm whether a man attacked this woman because she had a McCain sticker on her car.

Public Information Officer Diane Richard said police cannot substantiate her story, however, and the investigation is ongoing.

Richard said the 20-year-old told investigators a man approached her Wednesday night at an ATM in the city's East End, put a blade to her neck and demanded money.

She said she gave him $60 and stepped away from him, Richard said.

She further stated the man "punched her in the back of the head, knocking her to the ground, and he continued to punch and kick her while threatening to teach her a lesson for being a McCain supporter," according to a police statement.

The woman also told police her attacker "called her a lot of names and stated that 'You are going to be a Barack supporter,' at which time she states he sat on her chest, pinning both her hands down with his knees, and scratched into her face a backward letter 'B' on the right side of her face using what she believed to be a very dull knife."

The alleged assailant fled on foot, Richard said.

"We, the police, cannot substantiate this yet," she said. "This is what she told police."

The woman, who is from Texas, refused medical attention, Richard said, although she told the investigating officer she would see a doctor Thursday. There was no update on her condition, she said.

Richard said the woman described her alleged attacker as a dark-skinned African-American, 6 feet 4 inches tall with a medium build and short dark hair, wearing dark clothing and shiny shoes.

McCain spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker told CNN that McCain and running mate Sarah Palin "spoke to the victim and her family after learning about the incident earlier this afternoon."

Hazelbaker said the campaign would not offer more detail out of respect for the woman's privacy.

The campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama responded to the report with a statement saying, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the young woman for her to make a speedy recovery, and we hope that the person who perpetrated this crime is swiftly apprehended and brought to justice."

I don't think a typical armed robber is so politically conscious that he's going risk getting caught by wasting precious seconds to, what?...make a political point? According to the AP, police said they took no photo of the victim, who is a McCain campaign volunteer from Texas, on Wednesday, the day of the attack. But by Thursday a photo of the woman was circulating on the Internet.

Clearly she suffered some violence, as the black eye attests. And I'll be the first to say I was wrong if the story turns out to be true. But something doesn't add up.

Serious answer: you don't have to get too creative to piece it together, it could be done multiple ways. She could've been in shock from taking the hits or he could've had a foot on her chest while holding her head with one hand and carving with the next. There's plenty of different ways honestly.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Police investigating an alleged attack on a volunteer for the McCain campaign tell KDKA they are now looking into some inconsistencies in her story.

While authorities confirm that Ashley Todd has taken a polygraph test, they would not release the results of that test.

According to police, investigators working on the interview process detected several inconsistencies in Todd's story that differed from statements made in the original police report.

In a statement, police say, "Because of the inconsistencies in her statements, Ms. Todd was asked to submit to a polygraph examination which she agreed to do." The test results are not being released.

However, authorities are still trying to clear the inconsistencies, police say.

In the latest statement from officials, police report that in subsequent interviews Todd said she was walking toward the Citizens Bank after parking her car on Pearl Street when she was approached from behind by a black male. She says that the man then demanded money.

She said was able to get away from the man and started running back to her car when she was struck from behind on her head, police report.

Authorities say, "Ms. Todd told investigators that she fell to the ground and somehow ended up on her back and the actor climbed on top of her and started beating her about the face."

She also told investigators that she lost her glasses and lost consciousness in the struggle, according to police. Once she had regained consciousness she said she got back into her car and drove to a friend's address.

As for the injury to her face, police say Todd reported feeling "a stinging sensation on her cheek" when she came to, but didn't realize what had happened until a photograph was taken of it.

Todd also said she doesn't remember giving the man money, but she assumes it was taken because she does not have it anymore, officials say.

Meanwhile, police say they have received photos from the ATM machine and "the photographs were verified as not being the victim making the transaction."

Police say they are trying to obtain surveillance video from the area and are searching the area for possible witnesses.

No photos of Todd are being released by Pittsburgh Police at this time.

Yeah, first I heard this story it sounded fishy. Besides the fact that the "B" was carved BACKWARDS, it did not look at all like a "scar" from the injury she was describing. An attacker probably would have carved that a little deeper than the superficial wound that was shown.
