I got a Blu Ray player earlier this week and decided to pick up a few movies this week. Looking for some suggestions for movies that would look great with the player. I already have 300, The Departed, and I Am Legend.

I-Robot is one of the best looking BD's I've seen.

Cloverfield, Sin City, Saving Private Ryan

Sin City and Saving Private Ryan are not out on BD yet.

Are Blu-ray discs really worth the expense over an upconverter?

Do you folks just use your PS3 or did you get a "real" BR player?

^^ Well by most reviewers and audio/video folks, the Blu Ray player in the PS3 is one of the best ones out there, so while not stand alone it's very "real"

and yes it looks better than upconverted/upscaled standard def DVD's.

Walmart has a decent end cap of Blu Ray movies for 14.99 right now.

the Planet Earth series looks great if you like nature kinda stuff. Apocalypto looks good if you like that movie.

When I went to get my Blu-Ray a year ago at Best Buy, the salesperson said that I might as well get a PS3 because they costed the same at the time. I have been impressed with the picture quality all my blu-ray movies besides Iron Man. The movie was great, the picture didn't look HD IMO. But my question is, does a "REAL" blu-ray give you a better picture than PS3?

Nope, same exact player in both of them. I just got the blu ray player since it was half the price of the PS3

So how does the Blue Ray compare with the better HD channels on cable or sat? Think I'm going to spring for one after Christmas....or before...don't know when will be the best time yet.

It depends on the station. Some HD channels are better than others. I'll tell you one thing, as good as the images on standard DVD were, the images on blu-ray DVD is way better and it even upgrades the picture of your current DVD's.

I am aware of this...so you say that the better HD channels are just as good as Blue Ray?

if you guys really wanna get technical, HD cable displays at 720P, Blu-rays do it at 1080P. What this all really means is, on HD cable, its showing 720 lines to make up the picture while blu-rays display 1080 lines so the clarity is crisper.

standard def tv shows 480 lines.

You also need a 1080p TV to display your Blu Ray in 1080p. Blu Ray movies also have 480p, 720p, and 1080i if that's the best you can get though.

I would say Blu-Ray is slightly better. The best thing to do though is to go to the nearest best buy and see for yourself. They'll have TV's showing the HDNet channel and they'll have TV's hooked up to a blu-ray player.

No, HDTV is 720p or 1080i. Blu Rays are 1080P (if your tv supports it) so Blu Ray is the best picture you will get, period. I was reluctant to get blu rays at first as well, thinking that dvd upscaling was pretty good. Blu Ray blows it all away, especially certain movies. I found The Patriot to be really good actually. Also, btw, if you have surround sound and use an optical or digital audio connection, you get amazing speaker seperation and sound clarity with blu ray, also noticably better than anything on DVD upscaled or not

Dirk is right. The audio quality through a digital audio cable with surround sound is absolutely AMAZING.

Dont trust Best Buy. They dont know much and make up a lot of what they do tell you. THey convinced my dad to buy Plasma over LCD, claiming neither one burns easily. I have an LCD (nice tv but not even a brand name really) and it is in perfect condition after a year of heavy use, tv AND ps3. My dad's large Samsung Plasma has screen burns after a week

They have also been caught using an HD signal and a non-HD signal to sell their useless "snake-oil"-esc HDTV callibration service. They claimed it was the same signal on the same TV, the HD one was calibrated, the standard def was "HD but not calibrated"

They were also caught screwing customers over by putting one price on their web-site, having a higher price in the store, and then using an internal INTRA-net website exactly their their INTER-net website but with the instore prices to fool customers that asked about the discrepencies.

All that said, I shop at Best Buy because they are big and have most stuff, but do your own research

Nothing wrong with picking Plasma over LCD imo. Overall it's better, you just have to worry about the first 100 hours about burn in. After that I think it's better than LCD.

I am curious, why do you feel that way? I like LCD because it is brighter, which I like, and the screen is not glass so it does not have wicked reflection issues. I think the picture is just as good, from what I have seen. The only advantage to plasma from what I hear is motion blure due to lower frame frequncey on LCD but that only effects like 52" plus tvs, and LCDs have caught up in that reguard last i read.

If you're into any kind of gaming or just media, I would seriously recommend getting a PS3 rather than a blu-ray player. Not only does it play Blu-ray very well, but it is almost always among the top 2 or 3 on the market when it comes to up-converting standard DVD's. When I play a standard DVD in my PS3 it looks damn near hi-def on my 46" LCD.

I'm guessing he didn't go through the proper break in period on the plasma.

LCD may be brighter but plasma offers better blacks which make colors pop off the screen. Of course there are other factors to consider such as the location of your set. If you have a room with minimal natural light then you won't do any better than a plasma.

Check out this thread on a tier system for Blu-rays. Can be subjective, but gives an overall set of opinions on hundreds of titles. Also, most are hyperlinked to sets of reviews.

http://forums.highdefdigest.com/blu-ray-software-general-discussion/8749-tier-system-blu-ray.html

Personally, I'd recommend titles such as Casino Royale (I've demoed the beginning chase scene many times for friends and family), Transformers, I, Robot, Die Hard 4. Also, the recent blockbusters such as Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, The Dark Knight are all supposed to be great transfers.

I'm thinking about this one...

http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-SR606-Channel-Theater-Receiver/dp/B0015S8PGW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=audio-video&qid=1228282203&sr=1-1

does anyone have it or know anything about it?

The reviews on that receiver at the bottom of the page there say there is some HDMI buzzing, which would suck if true. I did some research on receivers and based on what i read I really like the Yamaha RX-V863 but of course its about twice the price.
