I'm trying to get back into my work out schedule, but its to cold for me to go running and i hate it. Is swimming a good way to work out? I plan on going to the gym, and i eat fine. I was wondering if swimming will replace my running, or fall short.

Many people will tell you there isn't any single workout better than swimming. It works all muscles there are. I'd say go for it.

Swimming is excellent exercise and not easy at all, I would say it is much better for you than running(and not near as damaging on the joints)
I hate chlorine though and it is not good for you.

I don't know about that, I never tried it for that purpose, I know a lot of people that swear by swimming though.
As twa just said though, they always complain about the chlorine, it dries your skin and hair out badly apparently. But yeah the ease swimming has on joints is a reason a lot of intensive rehab places will use swimming pools.

Meaning? Bad for my skin and hair?

Been shown to cause respiratory problems in several studies, but some people it obviously does not overly effect.
The hair ,ect are minor issues.
As far as fat loss it is a great low impact way to lose weight if you put the effort into it.

swimming definitely beats running....I lifeguarded over the summer and saw some diehard swimmers that came in early every morning and would swim forever like it was a piece a cake and so i would swim a few laps on break and constantly wonder how in the world they could do that....it's a serious workout

Without a doubt the best full body workout... what is your goal, fat loss or muscle gain? Your workouts would differ greatly. For fat loss i would recomend an interval workout that would let you keep your heart rate up for longer periods of time.
What is your swimming experience, how many laps can you do without stopping, do you know all the strokes or just freestyle (crawl)?
All of these questions would change what sets i would recomend.
