View Full Version : Stuff the other guy does that you think is cool

Being Jewish, I look on Christians and at Christian holidays with a slightly different perspective. This year, we're seeing our war on Christmas threads pretty early (is that like Christmas sales starting before Thanksgiving?), but I wanted to go the other direction...

What is something that a group that you are not affiliated with does that you appreciate or respect? Something the other guy does that you think is cool?

For example, I like Christmas carolling and Christmas Decorations. Christians (and some Jews like Irving Berlin) have generated truly beautiful tunes and thoughts for the Christmas Season. I've sung a number of them my whole life from the catchy ones like "Little Drummer Boy" or "Rudolph" to the more austere ones. Likewise, the tree and the homes are fun and joyous and exciting. It's a great exercise in creativity and pride (in one's heritage). Heck, I like the Norman Rockwellian image of the family decorating the tree together and stringing popcorn. That's awesome stuff.

I also appreciate the dedication of fasting in Ramadan. That seems like it would take great discipline and fortitude. I admire the strength of conviction to constantly forgo something. It does, however, explain some of the Muslim grumpiness ;)

I like the knot tying ceremony of the Bhuddist New Year as it is celebrated in Sri Lanka and quite a lot about the idea of balance and harmony in Taoism.

I find that there are elements of beauty and strength and wisdom in a lot of the stuff "they" do. All of the "theys" and "thems"

I've mostly talked about religion, because that's what spurred this thread, but if there are other others who have a tradition that you just think is worthy of mention, it'd be fun to learn about it.

I dig y'alls horse radish thing and would love to smear some all over my turkey and potatoes.

Also, 12 days of giving is a little much, if we could combine that with our 2, we could just have a present week.

I like the Hanukkah celebrations, I just don't know much about things other than the menorah and the extended days of gift giving. The daily fasting during Ramadan reminds me of the Christian season of Lent, so I guess those are the things that I like the most. I also like the Jewish Tallit, I bought one a year or so ago and use it on special occasions, like during our yearly Seder; which I guess is another thing I like. I guess its strange thinking about Jewish folks as "the other guys" because I try to appreciate the Jewish roots of Christianity especially in the ways that reflect our Messianic hope in Jesus.

I totally agree with this. I think of Christians as brothers or cousins because of all the similarities and because especialy here, we are all emeshed within the greater American culture, but for the purpose of going against the grain of all the divisive religious threads... heck, I guess protestants could talk about something Catholic they appreciate and vice versa, I'm considering us a "them"

Being Jewish...
....I like Christmas carolling and Christmas Decorations.
Sinner... :silly:

I'll readily admit that I don't know what a lot of what other religions do in celebration of the "holidays," so I don't have a really good answer.

One thing I did find cool however was when we had an exchange student from Germany when I was younger, she told us how her family didn't really have Christmas decorations around the house leading up to Christmas Day. However, when her and her brother were kids and woke up on Christmas morning, they'd walk out to a fully decorated Christmas tree (done by St. Nick himself) with presents underneath. I don't know why, but I just thought that was a really cool idea that made Christmas all the more fun.

Bar-Mitzvahs (sp) or Bat- don't remember which is which but my friends had some amazing parties at that young of an age I was extremely jealous of.

I appreciate and admire the test of will of Ramadhan. My good friend from college would fast from sun up to sun down (no water, nothing) and still lift, play sports, and not be grumpy as hell.

I wish I had that kind of mental will power. I admire the heck out of it.

No one ever said that they were beautiful, or young, and where there are 70 virgins there are 70 fathers, and where there are 70 fathers there are 70 mother in laws. Heaven that is not.

*edit: after 12 years of marriage I don't want to have 70 amateurs to work with.

This isn't really related to Christmas, but I like the Roman Catholic confession, not that I want to hear everyone's dirt, I just appreciate the power that confession has in a person's life, I just don't do the penance thing.

I think that you can call it part of Judaeism as one of the earliest teachings is to study the Torah daily and by extention education and learning are keystones and things that are to be exalted and always striven for.

Keeastman,

Here's one that I like for Judaeism. Don't know if it will resonate with you, but I always thought there was some nice in it. When a person dies, the whole community cooks and takes care of that person's widow. So, that all their worries are taken care of and they know in the most concrete way that they are not unloved or alone. I like that coalescing. I also like the tradition that when someone dies you plant a tree as memorial so that there is something that will live and grow and gives life back. I think it's a nice kind of "circle" thought.

I actually also like the idea of confession in Catholism, Asbury. I think it is a great cleanser and can help in guidance. I do sometimes think that the ethical paradox for certain types of confessions are problematic, but I like the notion of that little box and someone you can semi-anonymously share your goofs with.

for some reason this reminded me of the diversity day episode of the office

Pam: Um, hi. How are you?
Stanley: Fine, how are you?
Michael: (whispering) Push it. Push it.
Pam: Great, umm...(looks at Michael)
Stanley: I admire your culture's success in America.
Pam: Thank you.
Michael: Good. Bom bom bom-bom bom. Come on. Olympics of suffering right here. (Stanley smiles) Slavery versus the Holocaust, come on. (Stanley frowns)
Stanley: (takes off card) Who am I supposed to be?
Michael: No no no, well, that, that was inadvertent. We didn't actually plan that.
CUT TO DWIGHT TALKING TO MERIDETH
Dwight: (has a card that reads "ASIAN") Lots of cultures eat rice, doesn't help me. (moves on to Pam) Um, shalom, I'd like to apply for a loan.
Pam: That's nice Dwight.
Dwight: Okay, do me. Something stereotypical, so I can get it really quick.
(Michael walks up)
Pam: Okay, I like your food.
Dwight: (snaps fingers) Outback steakhouse! (Australian accent) I'm Australian mate.
Michael: Pam, come on. "I like your food?" Come on. Stir the pot. Stir the melting pot, Pam! Let's do it, let's get ugly. Let's get real. Pam: Okay. If I have to do this, based on stereotypes that are totally untrue, that I do not agree with, you would maybe not be a very good driver.

Here's my question, which I have to ask having never dated a Jewish girl myself. Putting this delicately, I have heard rumor that many Jewish women (not all, of course, but a high %) do not care to engage in a certain bedroom activity which requires no effort from the man. Is this true, because if so...um, that really sucks.

Anyway, getting back to the OP topic, I really wish I could have stomped on a glass when I got married. I don't know why, that just seems like it would be a lot of fun.

In a religious way:

Jews-Their faith and resilience. A people who have been to hell and back (repeat a few hundred times). I admire the Jews and their faith in the face of certain death

Muslims-Their praying habits. I mean, five times a day! PLUS the have to get up at the crack of dawn. These are people that believe in the power of prayer

Buddhists/Wiccans-Their love of God's creation. They, especially Buddhists (I've noticed), commit their lives to being at peace with nature and their fellow man.

I believe Christians can learn a lot from these faiths. I know I have.
