(CNN) -- A military jet crashed into a residential neighborhood in San Diego, California, on Monday as its pilot tried to land at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, an FAA spokesman told CNN.
The jet, an F-18, was not in communication with air traffic controllers when it went down 2 miles from the airfield, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said.

We heard a loud boom and then the planes engine just shut off. 2 pilots ejected but we only saw one chute. I dont know if they are hurt or not though. doesnt seem like it hit anyone on the ground.

Hopefully no injuries on the ground.
Planes are replaceable.

Yikes. Hopefully the pilots will be okay and nobody on the ground got hurt. How close was this to you, Big Mike?

close enough that we heard it.

Wow.
Hopefully the pilots are just getting checked out. Ejecting from a plane is a violent experience, even if all goes well.
Sounds like good news though. Crashing into a residential area obviously could've been a holy hell of a lot worse.

My brother used to live on El Cajon, was it near there?

Got an email from VADM Bucchi - he said that it was making an emergency approach and had already lost an engine. Sounds like it was on routine ops at sea off of the Lincoln and developed troubles.

Clearly this makes Obama 0 for 4. Man he's off to a horrible start.

Several people have lost their homes and an aviator is in the hospital. If you find humor in it, so be it.

We all have connections. I didn't mean to come across that way. I simply sent him an email and he had a few details, but nothing more.

No, no. I didn't mean that as a smart-ass comment. I think it's cool that you're connected to a lot of people in high places. No offense intended whatsoever.

Could be weirder, like Howard Hughes crashing into your living room.

Just a few people in the aviation community and one in Nascar. Not connected with anyone in the Redskins organization - that makes me almost nothing. :D

theyre doing carrier landing quals right now on the stinkin lincoln off the coast and he most likely was a rookie pilot or younger.
but one engine went out and then it got quiet and crashed. it could have been a whole hell of a lot worse.

Heard on the news, 3 dead; all from the same house. Initial reports were a grandmother, mother, and 2 children were missing. From what I've read it still looks like 1 is missing.
Does not look good. I feel bad for the pilot as well... hindsight is always 20/20... but in the end the people are more valuable than the plane. There is some poor husband who is burying a parent, wife, and two children (worst case).

Sad.
God rest those killed, and comfort those left behind. :(

So sad. I have no doubt the pilot did the best he could to steer the plane to a safe place before he punched out.

The pilot certainly was not "The Great Santini".
he didnt do as bad as youd think flying over 100 miles on one engine. it was the jet that gave out, he ejected a mere 25 feet from the ground.

I read this morning that the father/husband who survived is forgiving of the pilot. From Fox News (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,464729,00.html):
Korean Widower Doesn't Blame Pilot for F-18 Crash

A Korean immigrant whose family was killed when an F-18 crashed into his house returned home to survey the rubble and said he doesn't blame the military pilot who survived the accident.
Dong Yun Yoon, 37, lost his wife, two baby daughters and mother-in-law after a Marine Corps fighter plane clipped a tree and plummeted into houses about two miles from base. The pilot safely ejected and was rescued hanging by his parachute from a tree.
"I pray for him not to suffer for this action," Yoon said at a news conference, according to The Los Angeles Times. "I know he's one of our treasures for our country.".....
Just unbelievable. I wish I could say I'd have that kind of compassion in my heart, but I just don't know.

he is so sad it is heartbreaking. he says he feels guilty to his father in law for what has happened and he doesnt know what he is going to say to him. the man is just in horrible pain and it hurts even me to see someone in so much pain and it was nothing he could control.
it was his wife, 2 kids and mother in law who were killed. he is basically all alone now in one sad incident.
