PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The Philadelphia 76ers have fired coach Maurice Cheeks with the team slumping at 9-14 a year after making the playoffs. Director of player personal Tony DiLeo becomes the interim coach.



The moves were confirmed Saturday by a person familiar with the decision who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because an announcement had not been made.

Cheeks was one of the more popular players in 76ers history and was starting his fourth season as coach. General manager Ed Stefanski had given Cheeks two contract extensions in the past season, but the slow start was enough to cost him his job.

Cheeks led the 76ers to the playoffs last year for the first time while he was coach.

elton brand signed the deal and has disappeared since. i though philly was a lock for the playoffs with Brand & Igoudala. neither are living up to deals they signed

Cheeks is a good coach though, hopefully he catches on somewhere else

Yeah, I thought the same thing. Especially in the Eastern Conference. Cheeks is also a Sixers icon, in a sense. Is Billy King still the GM there?

Billy King is out. Now it's Ed Stefanski, who was from the Nets organization. Stefanski has made some good moves since taking over...I don't agree with this one though.

But yeah , Cheeks was fired too early in the season , the rest of the coaches that were fired this season got canned with much worse records. Did you see P.J's record with the Thunder this year...they lost 14 straight or something lol
