View Full Version : Places you hate to drive.

Different from places you hate to go. This is places you hate to drive, it can be a town, state, city, specific stretch of highway, etc.
I used to hate driving in the city, but the more I do it, it's not as bad. However, I do hate when I want to make a turn and see that it's a one way street.
I do hate traffic circles though. Who ever thought that was a good ****ing idea? Someone sat around and thought "Hey, I know! Let's just make a circle that people drive around that is hard to get into and nearly IMPOSSIBLE to switch lanes once you get inside it! On top of that, lets throw a few crosswalks in there so not only are drivers dodging cars and having to pay attention to lights, they also run the risk of hitting a pedestrian! Awesome idea!!!"
Traffic circles BLOW.

I drove once in Atlanta. On a weekend. (So I didn't actually drive in rush hour.) Only place I've ever seen where I thought the traffic compared to my commute from Springfield to the Pentagon.

Pennsylvania. Miss your exit? You're gonna waste half hour of your life backtracking.Pennsylvania has the worst roads. They all look like they've dried-up and died. I do give the drivers there credit for understanding the "rules of the road" and maintaining reasonable flow. However, their idea of a merge lane is hilarious/slightly insane. How can someone merge onto a highway with a 25 ft merge lane? They've resorted to installing traffic lights at many of the merge areas, but it doesn't make it any better.

Driving from Snow Hill, MD through the eastern shore of VA to Norfolk. Takes FOREVER because of the towns and traffic lights.

yesterday was the ****ing miz. i was driving from baltimore back home to williamsburg. normally a 3 1/2 commute which i have no problem with as i plan my route according to what time i'm leaving and the traffic situation. i leave baltimore at 11 am, thinking 95 will be fine and this drive will be easy, no problem, piece of cake. well as many of you may know they recently split 495 north of the woodrow wilson bridge into thru traffic and local traffic. this split takes place probably 3-5 miles north of the bridge.
the masterminds decide that it would be best to do construction at the south end (near atown, va) of the thru traffic split where the thru traffic once again merges with the local lanes, without telling anyone. so from all the way back in maryland with no warning the thru traffic lanes are backed up for at least an 1 1/2 hours trying to get across the bridge and into VA. the construction has shut down both lanes and is making ALL the thru traffic for MD into Virginia drive on the shoulder. the whole time i'm watching the local traffic fly on by and easily merge back on 95 south of the bridge. i have no problem with the construction, but why the **** did the decide to not tell anyone that they had shut down both lanes south of the bridge, its absolutely moronic and the traffic was completely avoidable had they moved all traffic into the local lanes.

Ohio and Missouri. Hate them with a passion. There is always construction going on and those states are just miserable to drive through. We should just take them off the map...

I4 near Orlando and Orlando itself. Some of the most dangerous roads in the country.

For me, it's Downtown Los Angeles and Hollywood. Driving through those areas could be a real pain sometimes, especially the Downtown LA area, which has a lot of one-way streets.

Downtown Salt Lake of course. Provo Canyon when it's dark and snow is falling,(one of those have to see it type things). And of course, work.

im gonna have to go with orlando too. 80% of the cars on the road are worth less then the tires they ride on, and people drive these crappy cars with such reckless abandon. its a scary place to drive.

I'm quite comfortable driving in DC, but I refuse to drive through Adams Morgan on a weekend night. Parking there is equally disastrous.

Dominican Republic ftw.
No lanes. No traffic lights. Total chaos, and tons of motorcycles/scooters with all hell breaking loose. Horns....lots of horn honking.
12-14 lanes of traffic. You are going forward, and on either side of you, could be "lanes" of cars coming in the other direction.
And lots of dirt highways.
Worst place in the US? Orlando. Tons of tourists speaking tons of languages.
Rent that car.
Must......get to Disney.....Now!

The list of driving nightmares in other countries would make for an endless thread. I won't even go there.
I have no problem with city driving. I LOVE driving in Boston, because actually knowing how to get from point A to point B is a skill to be earned by relatively few. When you're showing secrets and shortcuts to the veteran taxi drivers, you've made it.
Boring or ugly driving is far worse than city driving. The NJ Turnpike sucks. Ohio sucks, Michigan generally sucks. The Philly area sucks. Most of Tornado Alley and the Plains states suck (for driving, at least). The slog through South Carolina sucks, the depressing overpriced pavement of South of the Border notwithstanding. At least places like Arizona and Nevada offer breathtaking scenery to go with your never-ending drive.
I have zero sympathy for people who miss their exits on highways like the PA Turnpike. Either learn how to plan and follow a route, or stay home. Buy a TomTom if you have trouble reading signs.

...which is trumped by the endless miles of PA's state flowers on the roads there. The key words in your statement are "construction going on"; in PA the construction never seems to start, end, or even take place, just inconvenient construction zones and roads to nowhere.
Roosevelt Boulevard in Philly is the one I hate the most. If it's your first time there, you'll end up sad.

I hate driving on 495 between 123 and 95 during rush hour. Its just crazy how many cars are all trying to go the same way.
Any downtown sucks for driving.... traffic circles are fine man. you just gotta take the appropriate lane for when you gotta get out. I think they are pretty fun .

After living in NYC for two months this summer, I was so happy I never had to attempt to drive in that city. For someone such as myself that has a one track mind, trying to keep alert with everything going on would drive me absolutely crazy.

Tampa during the week. Just like any other stinkin' city, it has a moderate amount of traffic. I swear that we don't have any traffic to speak of in St. Pete. Generally speaking, I hate driving a car anywhere. I'd much rather be on my motorcycle :point2sky

Cuidad Juarez. Particularly the bridge coming back. Not worrying about it now since I won't go till the drug wars are over. I sat in this line more than once in the past however.

I'm guessing the "genius" who thought of traffic circles realized they really aren't that hard to figure out and that they drastically reduce fatalities.

Driving just about any where in latin america is a nightmare. I've heard Asia is worse but have never beem there so I wouldn't know.
I was going to say this too...Mexico City is the worst I've seen, but even the border towns are crap. I hate sitting in line for hours waiting to get back into the states.
I4 near Orlando and Orlando itself. Some of the most dangerous roads in the country.
I lived down here for 9 months, but I must not be seeing the places you're talking about. Then again, I avoid anything on the south or east areas of town, so I don't get close to Disney or Universal or anything.
What do I hate most? Walmart. I don't care what city it is. I hate Walmart.

heh...I missed this one. This is more how I feel than hating any particular place. My commute is about 10 miles, but its pretty straight forward and traffic flows ok. In general, I *hate* driving - doesn't matter where. If I'm going somewhere with anyone, I give them the keys to my car if that's the vehicle we're taking. If they don't give them back, then they're driving.
