View Full Version : Relocating yet again, Charlotte area this time

Good morning! I finally got the official word that my company is relocating me. I'll be getting a nice promotion that comes with a nice increase in pay and hefty bonus eligability.

I'm pretty excited about it, but worried about selling my home. Otherwise, they are giving me a great relo package that is covering most of the incidental costs associated with moving. The one major downer is that they no longer cover realtor fees, so I'm in the hoc for at least another $20k out of my home proceeds.

So are there any other Charlotte ES'ers? Any tips and tricks for getting around, activities that are fun, and general info on the area? I used to live in Greenville, SC for a few years and have been to Charlotte quite a few times.

SS, Charlottes is a great place to live. I fly in there 12 times a year, on the way to my mountain home. For $300k you can buy a castle there. They even have a good football team. :silly:

Boone, NC it's about 100 miles NW of Charlotte. I've got a HS friend (who's also a member of the board) that's been living in Charlotte for like 15 years (works for the Newspaper). He knows the area really well and would be a good contact. Send a pm and I'll give you his contact info.

Congratulations and good luck!
Maybe you'll get there in time for their Super Bowl victory parade, cause it sure looks to me like the Panthers could win it.

I used to live in Greenville, SC for a few years and have been to Charlotte quite a few times. They got a few things going on downtown, live at 5:00. Plenty of bars, parks, etc. For sports, they have the Panthers, Bobcats and the Checkers (minor league hockey). Checkers games are cheap and they play in the new arena downtown, so it's pretty cool.

Twice a year, I go tailgating at the NASCAR race all day with my friends. Then I go home when the race starts (I live about 5 minutes from the track). They also have a new drag strip for drag racing.

As far as what to do, it really depends where you plan on moving to, in Charlotte or Mecklenburg county or are you going to move right outside of Charlotte, like Concord, Harrisburg, Fort Mill, SC.

Thats great! My brother in law, who is also my best friend, lives in Boone too. My dream is to have a cabin there someday.

Great info!! Thanks! I'll actually be working in Lancaster, SC, so I'll probably end up in Fort Mill, Indian Land or Rock Hill areas.

Thanks Bang!! I'm praying this is my last move. I've been on a 3-4 year plan everywhere I go so far.

Try looking into Baxter Village off exit 85 on I-77 in SC. That's a great spot to live. It's right by the interstate and it has a bar in the neighborhood you can walk to. Actually, it has 3 bars.

I have a buddy who bought a place on Lake Norman.

Beautiful, within driving distance (I believe 20-30 minutes) and a good value

I wish I could! Unfortunately, my office will be about 30 miles south of Charlotte (the opposite direction of Lake Norman)

I've gone boating on Lake Norman many times and just loved it up there though.

sigh.....good luck! We just moved back to NoVa after being in Charlotte for 3 years. We loved it down there. Really good place if you've got a young family.

We'd love to but, when you're young, you need to follow the $$ and that meant us moving up here for a job op I couldn't pass up. If given the right circumstances tho, I would jump at the chance to move back down there.

Yes, I think it generally considered Fort Mill, if it isn't in the limits.

FYI, Lake Norman area is Exit 28 on 77 up in NC. So that's 28 miles from the SC line. You don't want to do that. Look at Lake Wylie instead.

Also, gas in Fort Mill is the cheapest I have seen it anywhere recently. I was up that way from Daytona last week and it was 1.26 at a Raceway. No kidding.

And the SC taxes are better, so don't live up in NC, just enjoy the Charlotte perks.

No one mentioned Carowinds. Its in Fort Mill. Very nice amusement park if you have kids. Great for adults too.

Congrats!

The real estate market should work in your favor--the Queen City took a huge hit with Wachovia going under. You're looking for a place to live at a great time, right now.

This is a good area to raise kids in. It's usually pretty quiet. Being close enought to Charlotte is good, but the traffic to Charlotte stinks as does every major city. South Carolina is cheaper as far as taxes and costs compared to NC. Gas was $1.36, now because of the holidays its at $1.48. Still not bad. Rock Hill has a few things to do, but you have to go to Charlotte for bigger things. They have the AAA Knights who play in Fort Mill (White Sox AAA) and the Charlotte Checkers minor league hockey. Of course the Bobcats and Panthers. Panther's stadium is really nice.

No good mall in Rock Hill. The one that is there is old, grungy and one level. We go to Pineville, NC mall, Southpark mall in midtown or drive to Concord Mills mall on I-85. All in all, not a bad place to live. We have several house on my street for sale. Look up Hollythorne Drive in Rock Hill. Very quiet neighborhood. I left my garage door open all day and went to Charlotte from 11 AM until 10PM and NOBODY bothered anything. Scared the crap out of me. PM me if you can't find my street and I'll see if I can get addresses. Lancaster is about 40 minutes away from Rock Hill, but it's a one horse town.

Oh and Lake Wylie has VERY expensive houses, but you may be able to find some affordable ones. Some parts of Fort Mill are kind of pricey. Rock Hill has been pretty steady.
