Many of my friends and several of my enemies have been telling me that I need to do this- that it's a great networking tool, a good way meet long losts, and a good self-marketing tool. I have been resistant (although I'm not sure why).

So, what do you guys think of the My Space and Linked In? Do you have a page. Is it fun or too much of a bother. Does it eat too much of your free time (isn't that what ES is for?) or is it a great diversion? What experiences have you had with it on the upside and downside?

Myspace is great if you're a teenage attention whore.
LinkedIn is good for professional networking.

I thought Facebook was the teenage attention whore one. Are they both or am I getting them mixed up?

Never heard of linked in.

I have myspace, but go on very infrequently now. I still do facebook, though.

Both of which are good for teenage attention whores.....

I think myspace has the market share of attention whoring.
facebook grabs a good % of them as well.
Facebook is easier for me to deal with. Pages load faster because you don't have people with ridiculous backgrounds and songs playing.

Don't fall for that "teenage attention whore" nonsense.

They're plenty of folks (adults) on ES that have Myspace and Facebook pages.

Its just that for some reason many of them are embarassed to admit it.

I have a myspace page but I primarily use Facebook. I've reconnected with alot of old friends because of it.

They are both great ways to stay in touch with friends (MySpace and Facebook). I've reconnected with countless people, and I use my MySpace as a photo album and blog primarily.

question for you guys....

what makes you think this site is any different then myspace of facebook?

you have a section to post your pics. people make threads (bulletins) all the time stating how they feel. theres a place to send emails back and forth. you have a buddy list just like you do on facebook and myspace.

so what makes this site any different?

Facebook is more for adults than Myspace.
Myspace is great if you're either a kid or looking for music.
LinkedIn is strictly business networking, and I've found it works alright. I mean hell, for free i list on LinkedIn, and I've culled one job from it by doing nothing but allowing people who know me to link to me. So far that's a positive.

I'm on LinkedIn. As others have said it's professional networking. Hasn't done anything for me yet.

I couldn't care less about Facebook and MySpace.

I've got a facebook page. I've been surprised at how many friends I've reonnected with from college and highschool.

I have a Facebook and a MySpace.

I use the Facebook way more often. It's easier to keep in touch with your friends that are not in the area.

MySpace is a drama site. I use it sparingly.

now this I understand, it is a matter of preference. And I agree with you and really only use Myspace because my son uses it.

I have a Myspace. Basically I just use it so family out of town can see pictures of my kid. I also found a few friends from when I was in the Navy so I also use it to keep in touch with them.

BigMike,

To be honest, I only use MySpace because of it's ease of hosting images. I go to a lot of concerts and take a lot of pictures so it's really my place to organize them and to direct people to look at them if they'd like. I also like the ease of blogging on there and post random things.

Facebook I use more for communicating with people and keeping in touch with them.

It may be related to age or even the industry you work in (older folks in the information technology industry use Twitter and Facebook more than similar folks in other industries). It may be the same in media. Twitter might be something you want to seriously look into for self promotion.

I use LinkedIn and have established both business contacts and reestablished old friends through there. I set up a Facebook page as I was curious about it too but have seen nothing.

One of the issues that seems to come up with both MySpace and Facebook is the separation of personal and private life. Do you really want your business contacts to see all those pics from that drunken party last weekend?

Yeah, I've been hearing a lot about twitter and Haro recently. Both sound kind of cool.

It may have come across differently then what I meant. I meant when people on here talk trash on those sites like they are for kids or beneath them but spend hours on here every day. I get what youre saying and I agree with everything you have said. I just dont see what the biggest deal between all of them is.

I gotcha.

It's because some people are just...well...people :silly:

It's essentially the same idea, but this site is more targeted towards a fanbase and not a group of friends.

I use MySpace for both bands I'm in - it's a convenient one-link location for songs, photos, one sheet, etc. Clubs expect it and use it to book bands.

LinkedIn hasn't helped me yet but it is good to keep up with the careers of former colleagues. I know it will help one day, maybe sooner than later.

If you join MySpace for networking you'd be better off networking with 6-year-olds. One of them might have a rich dad.

Long story short:

All three are called "social networking" tools. They are designed for social interaction across the Interwebs.

Here's the wiki on it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_network

Myspace is good for those that like to be creative, love music and videos, etc... The younger crowd tends to frequent this site.

Facebook is the same as Myspace but without all the backgrounds, pictures, music, etc... it's the same purpose but many like it because it limits the attention whore seeking ability of the site owner. It's pretty plain jane which can be good for those checking from their phone or that are still in the stone age of the Interwebz. Most people who attended college got on this, so there's a larger number of college friends that use Facebook. Where as Myspace is more of a way to reconnect with High School friends. That's essentially the difference.

LinkedIn is essentially the same thing but completely different. LinkedIn is a social networking tool for business collaboration. A recruiting tool in short. Keep all of you colleagues and business contacts up to date with linked in. What it does is, you hook into me and all of my contacts are available to you, kind of like a tree. So if you are looking for work or looking to get someone for work, you can use a larger rolodex by combining all of your contacts resources and using their contacts etc... I suggest everyone get on it.

Companies are starting to create their own social networking platforms with tools such as Microsoft Sharepoint. It's great for collaboration especially in a global company or firm. Much better then a company portal to find people, know people and understand them at a personable level.

Difference in this site is, you really don't know who I am, like vital statistics and such. It's more Ninja here.

same with myspace. you choose to put where you are from, how old you are and any other voluntary info on here. i dont have to put a pic up or anything like that.

Go with Facebook instead of MySpace. Facebook is larger and is more organized and it has a better interface.

BTW, Linkedin is great networking tool. Highly recommended.

You have to give permission for someone to see your LinkedIn or Facebook page. Myspace is open to anyone. That's the biggest difference.

I use LinkedIn as a professional networking tool, and it helps a little.

I use Facebook to give friends easy access to updates and pics of my family.

I don't use Myspace.

BigMike619

not true henry, my myspace page is "private" and you have to be one of my friends to see anything on it.

plus with my son, you have to know his last name or email address in order to even send an email asking to be added.

Facebook and MySpace both have privacy features so a member can make it as private or as public as they want.
