ummm, John Williams, end of discussion.
However, my sentimental pick is Stewart Copeland. He's done some great scores and he is one of my favorite drummers ever

James Horner. LOOOOONG list of credits including Braveheart and Titanic.
Winner, top of the list, imo. John Williams' stuff all sounds the same.
Add the Horner's list Glory, Beautiful Mind, Perfect Storm (not a great movie, but a great soundtrack)

John Williams
Harry Gregson-Williams
Danny Elfman - he's kinda underrated. He takes whatever setting you have and puts music to it. No fault to John Williams, but his scores are all typical hollywood sounding. They are complex and very good, but sorta share a same tone.
Hans Zimmer - he chooses a certain type of movie and has great music for it, but it is always a rehash of an earlier score, and all of those scores are based off Mars from The Planets Suite by Holst.

My only beef with Danny Elfman is just that... all his stuff seems to sound the same. The Simpsons sounds like Beetlejuice sounds like etcetera and so on. I don't take issue with the fact that he lacks Classical training and can't really read or write music all that well, but I think the one thing that makes him somewhat recognizable is what truly limits the credibility he will receive.

It's the horns. I've really like his stuff too, but its because of the horns I tell it's Elfman right off the bat.

Have to mention James Barry, for doing just about all of the Sean Connery James Bond films.
Big props for putting Ennio Morricone on there. Spaghetti westerns and [i]The Untouchables[/u].

No love for Jerry Goldsmith??!! He is one of the best throughout the years. Defenitely can be put against John Williams.
I also personally really enjoyed Herbie Hancock's score for Death Wish.
Harry Manfredini is often over looked for his work for the Friday the 13th series.
