The guys over at thewarpath have done their home work. I am tired of reading about cutting this guy, trading this, doing that, so please please read below before throwing out another scenario of cutting Portis/Jansen/etc...Many of the players on this team cannot be cut, as their cap hit in 2009 would be HIGHER than keeping them on the team, nor would any of them have trade value unless it was a re-sign and trade and even in that scenario say with a guy like Portis (who would have little trade value to another team) the Skins would still eat his current bonus in dead cap.

I posted something similar to this in another thread but thought I'd make it a topic for everyone to read; currently 116m in cap on rostered players for 2009, with the league cap going to 132m. There is 6m in dead cap (just about all Lloyd) bringing the Skins just under 10m in free space.

Older Players who if they were to be cut would actually save the skins cap space:

J. Taylor; savings 8.5m
S. Springs; savings 6m (8.483 cap - 2.483 cap hit if released)
M. Washingtong; savings 4.5m (6.5m cap - 2m cap hit if released)
All three in the last year of their deal.

C. Griffin; savings 3.6m (6.1m - 2.5m)
C. Rabach; savings 2.3m (3.6-1.3)
Daniels; 1.9m (2.05-.144)
both have 09 & 10 left on their contracts.

Players who in 2009 count more against the cap if they were cut, let alone what it would do to dead cap in 2010 / beyond.

Portis; 5.6 cap hit, 13.3 if released.
Samuels; 9.3, 9.4
Jansen; 3.4, 6.1
Thomas; 5.8, 13.4
Fletcher; 4.3, 6.3
Moss; 6.7, 7.2
Carter; 6.5, 6.8
ARE; 6.1, 6.7
Smoot; 4.1, 4.2
Rogers; 2.4, 3.8
Betts; 1.9, 2.75

The rest of the players are either too young, rookies, or are guys like Thrash and Sellers (wouldn't surprise me if Big Mike wants a new deal) whose salary is next to nothing as is their cap hit if cut.

Bottom line, we have plenty of cap room to sign our draft picks and pursue a big FA. We can clear more cap room but for what? We don't have the picks this year (unless Vinny can pull off what he did last year) to supplement the roster with young players. Of course there are FA's out there but why drop a guy like Washington for someone from another system?

This team has plenty of talent, need to win the battle on both fronts, which everyone agrees we need to continue to address, and hope that Jason with a 2nd year in the system gains the trust of the coaching staff by showing improvement in the offseason, same goes for the Thomas and Kelley.

Hail!

You've gotta trade away a couple of guys, get rid of a couple that are a burden on the cap situation, and you absolutely have to go after young talent in the FA market as well as get more picks in the draft. If it happens that the 13 spot can get you a sure-fire stud in the draft, then you keep it and trade away a player on the roster that will get you a 2nd and a 5th or 6th. Something to that affect...

Washington isn't playing enough.

Also there's no cap in 2010. I have a feeling whatever agreement is reached with a new CBA there will modifications to the cap to minimize the effect of contracts from before it was signed.

Also when you say we have plenty of cap space are you talking before or after we cut guys like Taylor and Springs and Washington?

I agree Washington doesn't play enough, I wouldn't anticipate he or Taylor (probably Springs too although many of us thought he wouldn't be here this year) to be let go.

As for 2010, forget the CBA, guys like Griffin, Smoot, ARE, and Collins are all expendable then, while creating dead cap it would free up over 11m, bringing the total in roster cap from 103 to 92m.

As for the cap this year, no I wasn't talking cuts. 2008 the Skins had 10m in dead cap, 2009 it's 6.6m. They also picked up 8.5m in vet salaries (7.5 Taylor and 1m in Hall) in 2008. Being about 8m under the cap right now, yes there are14 roster positions to fill and 4 draft picks, I think it eludes to certain players being let go and restructing which has happened EVERY off-season of this decade, but it can't be wholesale changes like a many are asking for or conjuring up ideas in posts.

Of the 14 spots that are open 9 are defense, 4DL, 2LB, 3DB. 2 special teams, K & LS, and then 3 OL assuming the roster in 2009 mirrors 08. If we assume the 3 mentioned above are gone, that's 12 defensive players gone 17 total, with 4 draft picks. It's a no brainer they will be active in FA but getting younger by picking up players who are free agents contradicts itself as they are already vets, getting vet paychecks, with vet years on their resumes.

I like the idea of trading, but reality is who is going to trade for players nearing the end of their careers for draft picks? Vinny might be able to work what he did last year, if he can that's a good direction to go, hope that a team late really wants a player available at 13...but trading Portis isn't going to happen. Not sure what Rogers is worth if they are interested in trading him. Who else would they trade, Cooley? Not going to happen.

Point in all of this is the roster is what it is, the cap will be addressed and money will be available to sign players who can make an impact (Taylor simply didn't this year), but cutting ARE, Carter, Jansen etc...won't happen because it makes the cap total in 09 higher than keeping them on the roster.
