My wife and I saw an ad (made to look like a regular newspaper article) for a "Miracle" Amish heater this morning. After a bit of digging around (there are some good sources here (http://todstrohblog.blogspot.com/2008/01/miracle.html) and here (http://blogs.chron.com/consumerwatch/2008/01/amish_heater_not_a_hot_item.html), the comments are great, especially the "plant" comments) it was readily apparent that these fine folks are selling two 1500W space heaters (usually priced around $20) and a fake fireplace front for $300 to $500.
One comment that really made me laugh
The heater is FREE! all you do is pay for the mantle. WOW! what a deal? So, if you have a problem with the heater and you want your money back, the phone conversation with customer service would go something like this:
"Ummm Sir/Ma'am? You say your new miracle heater is not heating the house for pennies and you want your money back? Hmmm. How is the mantle holding up? Because we can't refund you money for a none working heater that you didn't pay for. If the mantle is working then our end of the bargain is upheld." HA! Sneaky huh?
The Heat Surge site (http://www.heatsurge.com/index.cfm?) is hilarious. I'm sure they'll change it soon, but right now the prices are $587.00 (crossed out), with a much larger, red text $587.00 next to it, for the Deluxe Amish Cherry Fireplace. And then there's the "Prices valid for" counter, apparently I can only get this special deal for another 46 hours. I'd better act quickly.
The print ads are pretty funny too, the first link I put in has some examples.

I saw the TV add where they say "only uses as much as a coffee maker" or similar, but of course a coffee maker running continuously for hours on end will use a serious amount of electricity. If it run's continuously 24/7 one of these puppies will cost about $240 per month in electricity.

The White Van speaker scam happened to me a few years ago. Nice spring day, sitting at an intersection, sunroof open, two dudes in a white van pull up next to me and start asking me if I'm interested in speakers they have in the back.
Uhhh...no.

there was a pyramid scam a close friend of mine tried to get me involved in this summer but i cant remember what the name of the company was.
it was an electronics company that re-sold phone service and you made money of of the services you sell and all of the services the people you get involved in the company sold hence the pyramid.
Of course they swore it wasnt a pyramid scheme but it looked like every other one ive ever seen.
The strangest part was i spent some time thinking about it because i couldnt believe this friend of mine could be swindled, he is a proffesional contractor and makes tons of money and i couldnt figure out how he would be involved with this crap.

I would love to have said something...one issue...money! The people behind those infomercials were paying our station a boatload of money to run them...in some cases run them twice an hour. I doubt they would've heard me over the sound of money being deposited into the coffers of the station.

Kevin mother****ing TrudeauI had to look this guy up (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Trudeau), what a scum bag.
A few others:
Kinoki Foot Pads:
Here (http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Stossel/story?id=4636224&page=1) is a decent article by John Stossel. He put distilled water on the things and they looked the same way they did after a night on the volunteers feet. What a ripoff.
Internet speedway (now iSpeedway):
There are references to this being a scam all over the internet (I'm probably about 3 years late to this particular party), but since I still hear their commercials running:
'Make tens of thousands of dollars selling things on the Internet that you don't have to see, store, or even pay for'
Here (http://www.scam.com/showthread.php?t=2811) is a comment I read that explains the scam quite well:
Pay only $9.95 Shipping & Handling Fees to receive the Internet Speedway FREE 30 day introductory offer. Express shipping and handling for the 30-Day Trial is an additional $15. We ship to residents of USA and Canada only. Restrictions to certain states apply.
2. Pay nothing more unless you decide to keep Internet Speedway after 30 days. If within your 30-Day Introductory period you are not completely satisfied, you can request your return authorization number and instructions and owe nothing more.
3. After 30 days you will be billed 5 monthly payments of only $69.99, plus sales tax if applicable.
The introductory offer includes FREE 6-month Web Site Hosting and Warehouse Direct Subscription Service. If you continue the use of the Internet Speedway service after the first 6 months, you will be billed at our exclusive low rate of $19.95/mo. for web site hosting. Additional fees apply for warehouse access. No long term contracts or commitments are required.
The 'free' CD costs $10 to ship, then they hit you up for $350 if you don't cancel. Of course it's pretty much impossible to cancel the service. Then another $20/month to host. What a moneymaking opportunity (for them)!!!
I've read comments from people that bought into it, and when they didn't get any traffic (and therefore no sales) they called the company and were offered a service that would provide them web traffic, for only a few thousand dollars. Disgusting.

I saw a commercial the other day for a towel called the Shamwow. During the presentation, the guy clearly changes out the swatch of carpet on which he dumped cola to a second carpet with one little spot in the center. The testimonials from customers are clearly people at some kind of state fair who got one for free by raving to the camera about how great it is. So cheap and deceptive.

The white van thing actually happened to me just before x-mas... I read about it a few years ago... this (seriously) white van pulled up next to me at a gas station and the guy leaned out and asked if I was interested in gettting some high quality speakers for nothing. I knew right away and said no thanks - the guy at the next pump said he wanted to look at them and the van pulled up to a parking spot.. I told the guy it was probably a scam and be careful... he went over and looked at the stuff and came back a minute later as I was about to leave and said that, the guy was full of crap - I told him about the white van scam, how he probably was told that he had to get rid of the speakers before he goes back to the warehouse and the guy said that was it almost word for word.

The evidence shows the opposite when you watch the commercial. I'm pretty sure it is against Amish beliefs for their image to be recorded on camera.
Oh yeah? What about Kingpin?;)

no, the flame is digital, not just a picture, see one in real life then bash it if you want, i can name 1000 other things iv never seen just like you are doing that could be scams.... from one member to another i think you would really like it. like i said i wouldnt have bought one but i saw one at my buddies house and i thought it was cool to have in a room that doesnt have a fireplace.
You're satisfied with your purchase? I'm glad for you. But this company doesn't advertise the heater as "a cool digital flame" that otherwise performs the same as any other heater. They are pushing it as some sort of heating miracle that will lower your bills, and that you have to act fast to get one due to high demand. Both of those things are false. They do have a page on their site that explains that you only save money by turning down the heat in the rest of your house, but it isn't part of their print ads, which is probably what drums up the majority of their business.
By the way, I'm quite happy to see that a google search of "miracle amish heater" has this thread as the 6th result, and the word scam is prominently displayed. I hope it educates people on exactly what they will get for their money.
I can assure you that I would not like this product, because all I would be able to think about is the other things I could have done with that $200 or more that I would have saved by buying a regular 1500W space heater. Here (http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=42536-87334-HFG15A&lpage=none) is a 1500W heater you can buy at Lowe's for $13 that will do exactly the same thing as this "miracle". Keep in mind that a retail store generally marks things up 50 to 60 percent, so even $13 is overpriced.
If you're cool with paying 20 times too much for a heater because it has some flair, this is the product for you. Otherwise you should probably pass.

It's a pretty nice scam considering there seems to be a crapload of people buying the mantles. I see many of them at UPS every day.

Well, it actually exists to support scams, but the federal reserve is a huge one. Hoe about the biggest Ponzi scheme? You know, that thing called social security?

That's an interesting response. You understand that this company ripped you off and is perpetrating this scam on other people, specifically people that are in financial trouble, and yet you're satisfied. Curious.
