Two for the Keeping
Redskins have decision to make in two unrestricted free agents
01/05/09
by John Pappas – Capital News Services
While Washington Redskins Executive Vice President / Football Operations Vinny Cerrato will not comment on player moves this offseason until talent evaluations underway at Redskins Park are complete, the consensus among those who cover the Redskins is that the team will strive to get younger this offseason. With an old offensive line and aging defensive players struggling to stay healthy, the belief is the team will jettison older players in search of youth.
In the midst of the talent evaluations, two veterans the Redskins might consider re-signing are Khary Campbell and Demetric Evans, both of whom are set to become unrestricted free agents this year. Both play key roles on the team and had productive seasons in 2008.
Campbell, a 7th year special teams ace and reserve linebacker, signed with the Redskins as a free agent in 2003. He entered the league with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2002 before spending two seasons with the New York Jets prior to signing with the Redskins.
In 2008 he led the Redskins in special teams tackles (27 unofficially) for the 4th straight season and contributed an additional 13 tackles (10 solo) as a backup linebacker. Prior to the 2008 season, the team recognized Campbell’s contributions on teams, making him one of six team captains and along with Rock Cartwright, one of two on special teams. The Redskins finished the 2008 regular season ranked 4th in the NFL on kick returns, 15th on punt returns, and 24th in kicking.

I hope we keep both of these guys around. Both have busted their tails here. Heck, I'd take Evans over J. Taylor ANY day...

If they're interested in youth, why does it seem like they're keeping Shawn Springs and ditching Carlos Rogers?

It remains to be seen what they do with Springs/Rogers. I am of the opinion that they will keep Rogers. However, he is one of the players that has value in a possible trade and with the team having so few picks they may want to deal him.
I personally hope they keep him.

JimmiJo you tricked me. The title is "Two for the Keeping" and the article starts out talking about Vinny. :secret: He's not a keeper. ;)
They may wish to get rid of Campbell and Evans because they've been more productive than most of Vinny's draft picks.

The only reason to let either of those two players go is if they ask for too much money. Khary Campbell is strictly a special teams player. Sign him for close to the minimum contract. If the Skins pick up a better backup LB then he can always be cut later in training camp. I like Demetric Evans. He's not a super DE but is serviceable. The Skins have Evans, Buzbee, Jackson, and Carter at DE. I don't think Jason Taylor will be coming back (either his choice or the Skins). The Skins need to keep their high effort guys as long as they continue producing. If they let their younger hungry guys leave then the team suffers.

Evans should stay, I'd like Campbell to stay but he's definately more replaceable. Possibly even with guys currently on the roster.
I think if the FO new how well Evans would play this year they never would have made the trade for Taylor. Which is one of the reason i'm not to upset with that trade. I don't think there were alot of people that thought Evans would step up the way he did. He hadn't shown anything special in the past.

Does Springs have ANY trade value?
He will be 34 next year and has a base salary of $6 million for next year ($8.485 million cap number for the Redskins - Washington Times). He has also had some health concerns. I don't think teams would want to give up a player or pick and then have to pay him that much for next year when he may be released outright. Also I believe next year is the last year of his contract.
So the short answer is no, not much.

I hope you're right man. I really think the best thing to do at this point is Keep Rogers, pour our 1st and 3rd into the OL and just eat our losses in this year's draft and keep all of our picks for 2010.
We're going to pay one way or another. Either by losing a top-performer like Carlos or by being fairly invisible on draft day.

For this season I thought Evans was way better than Taylor, plus Evans can play the run and has played some DT for us, he's a valuable backup/sub that I really hope we keep.

The team needs to keep Evans. He is a quality player that can play the run and occasionally get a pass rush when lined up at DT. Cheap price, effective and good guy to have around

I agree neither of these guy should cost too much money and both do their job. It's a no brainer along with keeping D Angelo Hall

Just imagine if the team didn't overreact to the Phil Daniels injury and acquire Jason Taylor. Then the team wouldn't have wasted two draft picks (you only mentioned the second rounder in your article) and the hefty annual salary on Taylor. With even more playing time, Evans would have easily shown once and for all that he's earned a place in the regular rotation.
Nice writeup ... I'm glad you finally found your "A game" now that the season is over.

I just wish I could have worked in Cooley's package on the Internet like you did, numerous times. Alas, we cannot all be HomerMcFanboy.
You are right, I forgot about the 2010 6th rounder.

I have never once been impressed by Khary, and if we keep him, I hope we grab two linebacker in the offseason so I never have to see him on the field except for special teams, ever again.
I love Evans, and wish he had the great talent to match that hustle.

I would like to see us resign both. Both are cheap players and Evans is solid at DE. Campbell is a very good special teams guy.

I honestly think we have something in Khary Campbell, along the lines of Antonio Pierce. We should give him a serious look as a starting LB should MW leave.
